Dixie Creek Campground — East Canyon State Park

A good example of how government campsites should be done

Overall, the facility is neat and clean for a campground. My visit was at the end of the 4th weekend, so some messes were expected. My campsite was in good shape upon setting up my 30ft trailer. All sites are back-in and mostly flat asphalt. A little rig leveling might be needed. The outside of the loop at Dixie C.G. is electric and water only. The inside of the loop has full hook-ups.

All sites have long, sturdy metal tables and a metal cover over a concrete pad. A fire pit was adjacent. Even with fire restrictions almost everywhere else in Utah, wood fires were permitted in the provided pit. Common area toilets are well maintained, containing flush toilets and running water. Most service buildings also contain free showers.

A one-star deduction is due to the effects of climate change, which is out of the Park's control to an extent. That said, my beef is with maintenance of the beach - a nice beach by the way. It's obvious where the historical water level use to be. Wish I could have seen the reservoir full because it may never happen again. But I digress. I think the park should rake or scrape the beach surface to remove offensive weeds and people's discards. That takes workers, budget and equipment. My guess is our State representatives lack interest to fund state parks for such mediation measures. It would greatly enhance the visual appeal and safety for families at the water's edge.

Hailstone - Upper Fisher Campground — Jordanelle State Park

    Immaculately maintained campground

We stayed for only one night, but I would come back here in a heartbeat! Big, clean bathrooms with running water, mirrors, flushing toilets, & hot showers. Gorgeous view of the lake - you can walk right down to the water from your site. Super friendly staff. Tent pads are all level and maintained after each camper. Has all the other essentials- clean picnic table, big clean fire pit, and a charcoal grill.

    Decent water destination!

We went during the summer and had a great time. The views were perfect and the lake is active with choice of water fun rentals. The site is standard with a small lawn area and a pavilion. Bathrooms are onsite as well as showers. Pet friendly but need to be on a leash at all times. Great for RV’s as power and water is present on each site.

Cottonwood Campground — Willard Bay State Park

    State campground close to highway

Two loops that we saw, the first has no hook ups and the second has power and water at each site. There’s a little paved slab with a picnic table and covering, each site has a fire pit and charcoal grill. $30 for no hook ups $40 for hookups, got in around 8pm and no $30 sites left. There are toilets and showers for each loop. Really close to the highway so be prepared for that noise, and there’s a train that goes by every so often.

    Mountain Valley RV Resort

    Mountain Valley RV Resort, Utah

One of our all time favorite RV parks. Located in beautiful Heber City, Utah. We felt at home as soon as we arrived and were greeted by a nice man on a golf cart who lead us to where we’d be staying. There is an adult only section if you’re looking for peace and quiet away from kids. The concrete was level and spacious, each with its own picnic table.

They have two dog parks, one of which is the nicest and largest one we’ve seen thus far. The laundry room was sparkling clean and located adjacent to the pickle ball courts and outdoor fire pits. They have an on-site RV wash available and allowed us to borrow an adaptor from them at no charge. We enjoyed an evening in their hot tub/spa. They also have a large pool area near the bathrooms that were the most well maintained bathrooms we’ve ever used on the road. To top it all off, they have a gorgeous fitness center with weights, a treadmill and elliptical available to all guests.

Overall we were extremely impressed with all amenities and the customer service provided at Mountain Valley RV Resort and would recommend it highly to anyone visiting the area.

    Tanners Flat

Good location for exploring Wasatch Mountains and Salt Lake City

You really need to know this: No dogs are allowed because this campground is in the Salt Lake City watershed.

And this: As inviting as the water running through the campground may look, you are not allowed to swim, wade or wash in it.

One more thing: Gate closes at 10 pm although that didn't stop some partiers at the next site in from us. They partied and left around 11 or so. There was no payment tag on the post. The exit is open but has tire shredders if you enter over them.

A pleasant surprise at a Forest Service campground: 10 lbs of ice for $2! (There was also the usual bundle of firewood for $6.)

An unpleasant surprise: Old, dirty bathrooms. I've seen cleaner vault toilets elsewhere than these flush toilets.

There is no water for now (July 2018) in bathroom sinks or at spigots. The host said something about a pipe issue and water needing to be tested. That covers the amenities other than dumpsters.

What about the sites? We arrived on a Sunday morning when the host was putting up signs indictating which sites were reserved. We had 3 possible sites among 1 through 19 and grabbed #9, a pull through site with a buffer between the road in the parking/small RV area.

Sites in the other area (higher numbers) were becoming available, but that area's host said many of the sites were only appropriate for tents.

Our site #9: There are a few steps down to the picnic table, fire ring and grill plus a separate area to the left for a tent. See photos.

    General site info:

    • Some sites have a concrete pad for the picnic table, etc.

    • Many sites have an area for the tent that is away from the picnic table and concealed from the road.

    North Fork County Park

    Nice, spacious, and secluded

Enough trees to keep your site private, able to fit a 30' trailer in over 75% of their spots, and holy cow the number of spots they have, this place is the size of 4 good sized camp grounds combined. Fire pits and picnic tables included, but that's all that's included so pack your generator and fill your water.... 5 stars it's exactly the get away we were looking for.

Guide to Coalville

Cabin camping near Coalville, Utah offers visitors access to multiple water recreation areas within a 30-mile radius, including Echo Reservoir, East Canyon Reservoir, and Jordanelle State Park. The area sits at approximately 5,600 feet elevation with summer temperatures ranging from 70-85°F during daytime hours. Winter temperatures often drop below freezing, with many cabin facilities providing year-round accommodation options.

What to do

Fishing at Echo Reservoir: Located just minutes from Coalville at Echo State Park, the reservoir offers excellent fishing opportunities. "We stayed here one night. Was driving along the lake and ran into this campground. Nit very busy during the week. Facilities are kept clean. Power and water at each site; no sewer, no dump," notes Beverly F. about Dry Hollow Campground.

River activities: Many cabins sit near creeks or rivers where visitors can fish or enjoy water sports. "My family and I have been coming here for years. It has a lot of trailer spots that are almost all pull throughs and have hook ups. It's fun to bring kayaks and float the river," shares Jake V. from Echo Island RV Resort.

Mountain biking: Access nearby trails from several cabin locations. "Clean quiet camp with 30A and water, showers and flush toilets! Next to historic union pacific rail trail for hiking and biking (many goatheads so plan accordingly- tubeless?) Runs from dam to park city about 28mi," recommends Mark F. about cabin access near Echo Campground.

What campers like

Proximity to water: Many cabins offer direct access to waterways. "This site was very big & the creek surrounded on two sides. It even had 2 picnic tables. When we were here, this part of the campground was empty across from us & site beside us was empty which we loved!" reports Tisha B. about her stay at Echo Island RV Resort.

Off-season quiet: Fall and spring offer less crowded conditions at cabin sites. "Pulled in late and found this hidden gem, electrical and water at all sites," notes Dan B. about his experience at Dry Hollow Campground.

Wildlife viewing: Many cabin locations offer wildlife viewing opportunities. "I would stay here again. We enjoyed the sunrise over the lake and watching wildlife. We were able to spot many species of birds as well as deer, sheep, & prairie dogs," shares Kalli W. about her cabin stay at Big Rock Campground.

What you should know

Seasonal availability: Most cabin rentals require advance booking, particularly during summer months. "Reserved a few hours before arriving on a Sunday in June and there were plenty of spots. Camp host was super nice when we arrived," notes Mike A. about availability at Echo Island RV Resort.

Noise considerations: Highway proximity affects some cabin locations. "We got to listen to the birds. The campground kids enjoying the playground & pool were on the other side of the creek beyond a thick stand of trees," mentions Tisha B. about sound levels at her cabin site.

Water levels: Reservoirs in the area experience significant seasonal fluctuation. "When the water level is higher, the lakefront sites will be awesome! We also really enjoyed the camp hosts. They were some extremely nice people, that took time to check on us during our stay," notes Zach R. from East Canyon State Park.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Some cabin sites include dedicated children's areas. "This is such a pretty and accommodating place to stay. They had a small pond for kids to fish in, two swimming pools and two hot tubs, very clean and modern facilities, well maintained campsites with fire pit," shares Carlee G. about the family amenities at Echo Island RV Resort.

Swimming options: Multiple locations offer swimming facilities near cabin accommodations. "Sites are all RV sites with covered picnic tables on concrete patios with electric and water. The campground is a little close to a road, so you can hear it, but it's still pretty peaceful," notes Caitlyn R. about Dry Hollow Campground.

Entertainment amenities: Some cabin rentals include additional entertainment options. "We got to visit the Jordanelle and they told us about a campsite that's about .5 mile hike and its first come first serve. It was great - it had a firepit and picnic table and was right on the lake," shares Kendall B. about cabin camping options at Jordanelle State Park.

Tips from RVers

Parking dimensions: Most cabin areas accommodate RVs but size restrictions apply. "Nicely managed campground, good website, efficient reservation process. Management very helpful and friendly. The campsites are nicely spaced, good tree cover, green well kept lawn at all sites. Gravel slots, picnic tables and fire pits at each site," advises Alice P. about the setup at Echo Island RV Resort.

Water pressure concerns: Several RV sites report high water pressure issues. "We stayed here one night while passing through, but we enjoyed our stay. The office staff was super friendly. Mark came out on a cart to usher us to our site. The sites are a bit close, but the campground was quiet and clean," reports Chris G. about Mountain Valley RV Resort.

Accessibility: Cabin and RV sites vary in level terrain. "Note that the water pressure is VERY high!! 110psi - so make sure you bring and use a regulator. Will stay here again the next time I'm traveling through the area," warns Joseph I. about the utilities at Holiday Hills RV Park.
