Free camping with sweeping views

Couldn't find first come first served in the park, drove out and found Lockhart Basin road just outside in BLM land. Lots of sites and some established firepits.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I access Lockhart Basin camping areas?

Lockhart Basin camping areas are located on BLM land just outside the main park. To access these sites, look for Lockhart Basin Road, which serves as the primary access point to the dispersed camping areas. The road is situated on public Bureau of Land Management property, allowing for legal camping options with established sites. Some campers choose this area when unable to find first-come, first-served sites within the park itself.

Do I need a 4WD vehicle for Lockhart Basin?

A 4WD vehicle is highly recommended for accessing Lockhart Basin camping areas. The Basin Road can present challenging conditions including rough, uneven terrain that's difficult for standard passenger vehicles to navigate. High clearance is particularly important as the road may have rocks, ruts, and uneven sections. Road conditions can worsen after rain or during winter months, making 4WD capability even more essential for safe travel and to avoid getting stuck in remote areas.

What are the camping regulations in Lockhart Basin?

Camping in Lockhart Basin follows standard BLM land regulations. These sites are dispersed and operate on a first-come, first-served basis with no formal reservation system. While there are no designated campground hosts or facilities, you'll find some established fire pits at various sites. Standard BLM rules apply, including a typical 14-day stay limit. For the most current regulations, check with the local BLM office before your trip as rules for dispersed camping can change seasonally.

What activities can I do while camping in Lockhart Basin?

Lockhart Basin offers numerous outdoor activities for campers to enjoy. Hiking through the stunning desert landscape provides opportunities to explore unique rock formations and enjoy panoramic views. Mountain biking on established trails is popular among adventure seekers. Wildlife viewing and stargazing are exceptional due to the remote location and minimal light pollution. Photography enthusiasts will appreciate the dramatic desert scenery, especially during sunrise and sunset. The area also allows for scenic drives on back roads for those wanting to explore the broader region.
