Mountain bikers and ATV enthusiasts will find extensive trail networks radiating from Wedge Overlook, a free dispersed camping area managed by the Bureau of Land Management along the rim of the San Rafael River canyon. The graded gravel access road extends roughly 20 miles from the nearest services, requiring campers to arrive fully stocked with water and supplies.
Sites scatter along approximately three miles of rim road, with many positioned directly on the canyon edge where campers can watch the rock formations change color throughout the day. Keith L. notes the terrain is "perfect" for mountain biking, with single-track trails paralleling the main road and connecting to longer route systems. The area accommodates everything from tent camping to larger RVs, though the road surface deteriorates toward the far end.
Two vault toilets serve the camping area, located at the main overlook and partway along the rim. Some designated sites include rock fire rings and post markers, while others offer primitive camping closer to the canyon edge with greater privacy. Memorial Day and other holiday weekends see higher occupancy, but sites typically remain available throughout most of the season. The exposed desert location provides minimal shade and can experience significant temperature swings between day and night.
"Bring lots of water," advises Megan H., as no water sources exist on-site and the nearest town sits 40 minutes away. Wind gusts can be substantial along the rim, and rain turns the access road muddy and potentially impassable. The area operates on a pack-in, pack-out basis with no garbage collection.
Campers seeking additional rim camping can explore Little Grand Canyon Dispersed Camping nearby for similar canyon views with different access routes.
