Government Camp Safety Rest Area

Within Mt. Hood National Forest, Government Camp Safety Rest Area provides overnight parking for self-contained RVs and car campers along US Highway 26. This US Forest Service facility functions as both a highway rest stop and informal camping area, with a large paved lot that accommodates big rigs alongside standard vehicles.

The location sits directly adjacent to the highway, generating consistent road noise from passing traffic and snow plows during winter months. Jacob D. notes "The only sound you would hear is the highway with cars, and plows driving by in the lot or the road." The facility features 24-hour restroom access, and Hayden G. confirms the "restrooms were clean" despite the high-traffic location. A self-serve gas station operates next door, providing fuel access for travelers.

Morning hours bring increased activity as the parking area serves skiers and snowboarders heading to Summit Ski Area. The lot fills with day-use visitors, creating crowded conditions that contrast with quieter overnight hours. Cell service remains available, and the site includes trash service and drinking water. Some uncertainty exists about overnight regulations, with mixed signage about parking restrictions. For those seeking more traditional forest camping experiences, Still Creek sits less than a mile east.

This rest area works best for travelers needing a convenient highway stop with basic amenities rather than a wilderness camping experience.

Many campers appreciated the clean 24-hour restrooms and convenient overnight parking in this large rest area. Highway noise from US26 is consistent, and morning crowds gather for nearby Summit ski area access.

Clean bathrooms

Big lot. Right next to the US26 so it can be loud but the restrooms were clean and there’s a self serve gas station next door

Normal rest area

This is a rest area just off the highway. The bathrooms are open 24 hours. It is a big open parking lot. We car camped here over night and had no issues. Just in the morning it starts getting packed because people park here for the Summit ski area. There are a lot of signs about the parking here, and I’m not sure if it’s a Sno-Park. But we had no issues and don’t have a pass. The only sound you would hear is the highway with cars, and plows driving by in the lot or the road

Rest stop

I'm not sure you can spend the night here. It's a rest stop with no overnight signs, idk if they mean for a certain part of the lot though and probably no one would hassle you

Best place to stop for bathroom break!

Best place to stop for pitstop. Nice clean bathrooms and area for stretching legs and to check rigs for anything. Just down the road there is an amazing place called Huckleberry In and has amazing giant maple bars!! You can often see people skiing and snowboarding down the little bunny hill near bathrooms. Gas station near too! Also coffee shack to get your caffeine fix!!
