Santa Rosa Lake State Park encompasses Rocky Point Campground, a drive-in facility managed by New Mexico State Parks & Recreation that sits approximately seven miles from the town of Santa Rosa. The campground divides into two distinct loops: Loop A provides electric and water hookups at most sites, while Loop B operates without hookups but maintains access to a central water filling station.
Campers describe the setting as high desert terrain dotted with juniper and pinion trees, where ant colonies are common and wind exposure requires preparation. Emma M. notes "rocky terrain filled with a diversity of desert plants" along the hiking trails. Most sites feature covered picnic tables and grills, though ground fires are prohibited. The spacing between sites varies significantly, with some reviewers praising the distance while others found neighbors uncomfortably close.
A ten-minute walk leads down to Santa Rosa Lake for swimming and fishing access. The park's trail system includes a scenic lake loop that winds through desert vegetation, with several plants blooming during spring and fall visits. Wildlife regularly moves through the camping areas, and reviewers consistently mention the clean shower facilities with hot water. Cell service remains limited throughout most of the campground, with reliable signal only available at the scenic overlook.
Site selection requires attention to specific needs. Pull-through and back-in options exist in both loops, though leveling can be challenging on some sites. The handicap-accessible site accommodates only shorter RVs, and larger rigs may find maneuvering difficult around established trees. Water hookups concentrate in Loop A, while Loop B campers rely on the filling station. Neil P. confirms "HOT showers and clean bathrooms" throughout the facility.
For different camping experiences, Juniper Campground — Santa Rosa Lake State Park offers walk-in sites with more seclusion but fewer amenities.
