Colorado Bend State Park

This is a backcountry wilderness, low-impact, limited footprint camping area. It is not a group camp area. All tents must be in the boundary of the sites, with only four people per site. Camping outside the designated area is prohibited. Campsites are one mile from the Windmill Trailhead, but you can park at any trailhead in the park to customize your hike. The Windmill Backpack Area is five miles from the river and the main campground. No water or toilets are available in this area. No open fires are allowed, but you may use containerized fuel stoves for cooking. Carry out all trash and dispose of it properly.

From Austin: Take Hwy 183 North to Lampasas. Take FM 580 West for 24 miles to Bend, Tx. From Bend, head South for 10 miles following signs to the park. Once at the park's entrance continue 6 miles to the Park Headquarters. Be sure to follow the signs. From Waco: Take I 35 South to Belton. Exit to Hwy 190 West and go to Lampasas. Take FM 580 West for 24 miles to Bend, Tx. From Bend, head South for 10 miles following signs to the park. Once at the park's entrance continue 6 miles to the Park Headquarters. Great stay at the backcountry windmill area

We stayed in the backcountry windmill area… at site 8 I believe. It was one of the farthest back sites and was a great one! This is the type of place to call and ask which site is the best because not all of them were equal. There is a great loop you can do around the entire park if you want to backpack it all. It was very hot when we went, we recommend going on a cooler day ;)

Beautiful views, challenging hikes

We started our trip by going to Gorman Falls. Hike is pretty steep on the way down - it would probably be hard to do this with little kids (my fur child made things difficult for me). Super beautiful. we walked around at the bottom for a while and found other pretty rock formations and things to look at. Hiked back up and prepped for our primitive/backcountry campsite Windmill area 08. Site was gorgeous and felt completely isolated. we could hear people occasionally at other campsites but other than that we did feel like we were alone except for the gunshots every 30 minutes or so (my partner said there was a safari nearby). We didn't mind too much as we still felt like we had our privacy. 

The next morning we got up and went to Spicewood Springs. wonderfully challenging hike! loved it. 

Will certainly be coming back to Colorado Bend. I can see why everyone in Texas speaks so highly of it.
