Great park, long lines

Arrived on a Friday evening and had to wait in line to get my permit even though I already paid. Next time, I will pre-register and print my own permit (I think that’s an option).

I hiked a couple trails. The intersections were not clearly marked and I ended up veering off from my intended route. It was a full park but I didn’t feel on top of anyone. The park buildings are very cute and love CCC projects.

Walking around, I really liked sites in 8-12 and along that stretch. 54, 57, 58, 59, 62 are good alternatives.

Great place to stay on the Frio river

Garner is a great place to visit during the day and it exceeded my expectations for overnight camping. Lots of things to do, so you're never bored. Great swim spot, unfortunately I didn't get to go on a hike- next time for sure!

Fun Summer Camp!

Being a San Antonio native, it was nice to visit a State Park in my old backyard! Nightly Dances are great for all ages! Especially loved hearing the Camp’s theme song! Asked a female ranger for suggestions where to put down my yoga mat. She let me know a sweet place by the River between the parking lots up where the dance was the night before. We had a mid morning hike up Old Baldy that was fairly rigorous at times. (Check the weather before making the climb; rocks are slippery when wet!) Spectacular views! Cooled off afterward with a quick dip in the Frio River! It certainly lived up to its name! Definitely will be back!

Awesome awesome awesome

We had an absolute blast here. We’ve been wanting to camp at Garner and it has always been full. We finally got a spot and it was great. We were in spot 140 with our NOBO 19.3. It was a huge spot and was within walking distance to.....everywhere!! We had a dried creek bed behind our site that led to the river and my kids loved it. We were not far from a playground, could walk to the mini golf course, and right by the Rio Frio trail head. The views were amazing and the hiking was a blast!!

Beautiful Park Incredible River

I've been here twice and both times were great stays. Both times I spent two hours waiting at the office to sign in. There has to be a better way. Reservations or not, you will wait. Once your in, sites are great and river access is easy. Crystal clear water and plenty of room for all. Great hiking trails. Must see in Texas.

Campground choice matters

We stayed at Pecan Grove and it was definitely more of the party scene compared to quieter other state parks. When driving through, other sites seemed quieter, though further from the river. Overall great place, cool hikes, and the amenities seem cool in a non-COVID time! Just make sure to pick a campground that fits what you’re looking for!

Lots to do here!

I didn't get to stay here long but you can tell there's absolutely lots to do here. It's right next to a river and in the mountains/tall hills. definitely good place for families and group camping. This place even has its own laundromat which was kind of nice because the one night we dis stay all our stuff got rained on pretty good and had to wash all of our stuff. We did get to siwm in the river and the river was beautiful and clear. Wish we could have done more here but we were only here for one night. Definitely going back to stay longer to be able to experience the whole experience of this park. They have tons of long hiking trails that you can camp on, fishing, floating, kayaking, Exedra. Also this is definitely a park that you need to plan ahead for and get here early because it gets really packed with people coming in and out. It's a very popular Park.

One of the best in Texas

This is an awesome park. Has so much to do you can’t get bored here. It has great elevated trails that once reached has beautiful views of the hill country, with cool caves along the way. The Frio River runs right through the park and is amazing to swim and float in. They have a full store and food truck if your not into cooking your own food. And summer nights they have music and dancing right next to the camp grounds which make it easy to walk right back to your tent after. One of my favorite places to camp with a big group of friends.

A truly well designed park and campground

I just returned from my third time camping at Garner State Park. The first two times were on weekends, this time I went Sunday-Tuesday. I definitely recommend camping during the week if possible, as the park is quieter and less populated, but even on the weekends it isn’t overwhelming or crowded feeling, due to how well planned and spaced out the park is designed. If you can reserve a place in time, and are tent camping, I highly recommend the Pecan Grove campsites. They are sandwiched between the frio river and old baldy, and the main highlights of the park are all a short distance. The sites themselves are well spaced out, generally flat, grassy, and shaded by large pecan trees. They are water only, but this is a hurdle easily overcome by battery operated devices and portable chargers, which is what we have used. One warning I would give, the Park is something of a cellular dead spot, though most people get signal at the top of old baldy and some of the other trails at higher elevation. One person in our group was happy to do the half mile hike three times a day for signal! Others that had AT&T or Cricket (I think) had signal even down by the river and campground. There is WiFi available at the visitor center, though it is very slow. Reserve ahead of time, come early, and be ready to be somewhat off grid, and I promise camping at this park will rival some of your favorite spots.
