Wright Patman Lake spans 20,300 acres with water depths averaging 7-25 feet depending on rainfall. Located in the Piney Woods region of northeast Texas, the reservoir maintains stable water temperatures between 55-85°F seasonally, making it suitable for year-round camping. Concrete pads at most sites measure 30-40 feet in length with varying widths from 12-20 feet.
What to Do
Fishing opportunities: Clear Spring offers prime fishing spots for anglers seeking bass, crappie, and catfish. "This campground is an easy 15-20 minute drive from Texarkana and there are stores and restaurants closer than that," notes Dale Y. about Clear Spring.
Disc golf course: Rocky Point provides an on-site disc golf course for recreation between water activities. "This camp was clean. Has disc golf, trails, a pavilion, a basketball net, boat dock, volleyball net, and a swim beach," according to Lea B. at Rocky Point.
Wildlife observation: Early mornings and evenings offer prime deer viewing opportunities throughout the lake area. "Pulling in, we were welcomed by a herd of 23 deer grazing in the common areas," reports Nancy C. about Rocky Point's abundant wildlife.
What Campers Like
Lakefront views: Sites directly on the water provide scenic vantage points for sunset viewing. "Site B5 was not very level but we had great views of the lake out the front and side of our MH... Beautiful sunsets on site B5!" shares Jan S. about Rocky Point Wright Patman Lake.
Site selection options: Atlanta State Park offers both wooded seclusion and lake visibility. "Your choice, water and electric by the water or full hookups in the woods," explains John R. about Atlanta State Park Campground.
Well-maintained facilities: Regular upkeep makes most campgrounds comfortable for extended stays. "This campground is exceptionally well managed. The facilities are basic, with bathhouses throughout, centrally located dumpsters, walking trails, and grounds workers constantly working," notes Dale Y. about Clear Spring.
What You Should Know
Reservation requirements: Most parks require advance online booking with limited cell service for on-site registration. "Remember to book in advance online! They won't let you in without an online reservation and cell coverage is minimal," warns kcki M. about Clear Spring.
Water level fluctuations: Lake flooding may affect beach and boat ramp access seasonally. "We had a great 3 night stay here in c4. Close to the water and had good views. Lake still flooded so boat ramp and beach were closed. Put boat in at piney woods up the road," reports Natalie S. from Rocky Point Wright Patman Lake.
Highway proximity noise: Some campgrounds experience traffic sounds from nearby roads. "With fan on we didn't hear the traffic from road. Perfect spot for overnight stay for 2 adults & our pups," notes Paulene T. about Sunrise RV Park.
Tips for Camping with Families
Playground options: Multiple campgrounds feature play areas for children of varying ages. "We loved this campground! We had a spacious site in the D loop, camp was clean, and beach was fun. Highly recommend! Big playground, well laid out sites," shares Carrie I. about Piney Point.
Beach safety considerations: Water access areas require monitoring due to potential mud and depth variations. "The sand on the beach is bad. Due to flooding and earth slides the beach front is super deep mud. If there has been even a trickle of rain on the past week you will lose your shoes the mud is so thick," warns Amie M. about Atlanta State Park.
Hiking difficulty levels: Trail systems vary from easy walking paths to more challenging routes. "Trails are beautiful and if you piece them together can be challenging. This park is very well maintained. These are not wide, take the baby stroller kind of trails," explains Amie M. about Atlanta State Park's trails.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling requirements: Check site specifications before booking as some require additional equipment. "Sites are pretty good size with table, grill and fire ring. Pads are fairly level, only took 1 2x12 in the one side, make sure to bring blocks for the rear stabilizers as the pad drops off at the back," advises Steven V. about Atlanta State Park.
Full hookup locations: Select campgrounds offer complete utility connections, while others provide partial hookups. "Nice well spaced sites with level concrete pads. Lots of trees for shade in most sites. Beautiful views from the sites on the bluff. Most sites are water and electric but there may be some with full hookups," explains Bob J. about Piney Point.
Pet exercise areas: Many campgrounds provide designated spaces for dog walking and play. "Dog friendly," notes Jody J. about Shady Pines RV Park Texarkana, which offers pet friendly camping near Wright Patman Lake with spacious sites for exercising pets.
