    Tyler State Park Campground

    Lots to do!

It being August in Texas, we rented a limited use cabin with air conditioning. It also has a mini frig and a microwave inside. It has a queen size bed for which campers need to bring their own pillows and bed linens. The frig was super cold, and the AC worked well. There was a wood table with four chairs. The table was really sticky, so I recommend bringing something you can use as a table cloth. There are only six of these cabins, and they have a four bathroom building at the end of the cul de sac. No tents or pets are allowed at the cabin sites. Each has fire pit and water outside cabin

The park has a very small lake with canoe, kayak, paddle board, row boat, and paddle boat rentals. Life vests are provided with rental. It was fun! There is a good sized swimming area too. There are a number of trails of varying difficulty, some for hiking only, some for home and bike. Ranger programs offered.

Nice place to get outdoors for a few days

This is kind of a homey/tourist sort of campground and park. There's kayak rentals available as well as boats. Campsites are available as well as small cabins. You can also rent bikes and other things. If you're looking for a "resort" style camping experience this may be for you.

    Tyler State Park Campground

Great camping 2 hours from Dallas

I visited the Shortleaf camping area in the Tyler State Park for the weekend to participate in a 50k trail race. Each campsite in this area has a sheltered cabin, picnic table, fire pit and 2 parking spots. Tent camping is also permitted on the site but I used my iKamper Roof Top Tent as my primary place to sleep. The sheltered cabin has screens on the windows to keep the bugs out and electricity. I used this area primarily for storage of the food & gear that I used during the weekend. My campsite was located at the bottom of a hill and had a path to the restrooms and showers. These facilities were very clean and had 2 shower stalls and 3 toilet stalls along with 2 sinks. This location had access to the lake via a short hike. This type of camp site is the best of both worlds, you can camp via tent/car and still have a cabin like experience via the sheltered cabin.

In September it is still pretty warm in Tyler, humidity was 100% when I visited without rain. I'll visit again in October when the cooler temps arrive and undoubtable have an even better experience.

    Thousand Trails Lake Tawakoni

    Like a COE campground

We have really enjoyed our stay here. The campground in late November is about 2/3 full with plenty of space between sites. There are some seasonal campers but there’s still many more available sites and all are great. The non RV area is not occupied and feels abandoned. The activity/community building in that area is closed indefinitely. That could be why no one is there to tent camp because there are no bathrooms nearby. But it’s an area you can retreat to for quiet solitude. We have a view of the water and wildlife across the road with no sites to impede our view. This campground has several loops that follows the little branches of the lake. There are trails that accommodate bikes, and lots of activities for families and adults in separate areas. It has all the qualities of a COE with proximity to water, trails, bathroom and laundry facilities with the additional bonus of two separate pool areas and indoor facilities for events, games, TV, or community activities that they have regularly. There are playgrounds, mini golf, ping pong, corn hole, etc. This place is really huge and spread out. Oh, also a driving range in the center. Dallas is over an hour away. So for other things to do beyond the campground you will have to drive a bit. But there’s good places to eat in Wills Point and Terrell.

    Cons

Raccoons very aggressive and tried to take food that we were eating from our hands!!! Area 2 Lakeview sites require leveling side-to-side

Area 2 campsite parking pads are narrow with trees and large boulders close to parking pad.

ery narrow roadway in Area 2 with limited space to maneuver into backin sites.

One pull-thru site was so tight to the roadway, their trailer was partially on the road! Area 2 campground sites have no privacy from any other camp sites

Site 211 table, fire pit with cooking grate and lantern pole are located opposite side of the trailer door

Area 2 restroom/shower building serves 58 campsites and it shows it! Restroom facility badly needing some TLC, cleaning and maintenance Women’s restroom had 3 toilets and 2 sinks; men’s had 2 toilets and 1 urinal

    Tyler State Park Campground

    Options Galore!

This is my favorite state park in Texas! Lots of options for all kinds of campers. For camping, lots of different sites available for RVs/Campers, Tents, etc. some along the lake, some in the woods, and also cabins and shelters available! Hiking options vary from a nature stroll, to some more serious up-downs through the hills on the outskirts of the campground. Bring your friends, family, and pets, there is truly something for everyone here, even kayak and canoe rentals at the lake!

    Tyler State Park Campground

    One of our favorite parks

I should mention that my husband is from Canada. He was very unenthusiastic about camping in Texas. Well Tyler State Park made him change his mind! He LOVED the large trees, said it was the closest he'd felt to home in quite some time. We love the variety of types of sites they offer. Lake front, group, hike in, cabin, they have something for everyone! Only downfall is they book so quickly.

Liberty Grove Campground — Cooper Lake State Park Doctors Creek Unit

    Beautiful Lake and campground.

We were driving through this part of Texas headed home to Oklahoma and saw the signs and needed to stop for lunch, so we decided to check this place out. This was a really beautiful park with a very nice campground that was really kept up. It had screened shelters, cottages with heat & air, shelters, nice playground, Amphitheatre, volleyball court, boat ramps, picnic areas, hiking & biking trails and a swimming area. The bathrooms and showers were nice and clean. The lake was beautiful and clear. I would absolutely recommend this place and I plan on going to stay there for a week in June.

The courts are available to all overnight guests.

What campers like

Spacious cabin layouts: Cabin interiors at most parks provide adequate room for small groups. At Tyler State Park, cabins include "a queen size bed" and indoor tables with chairs. The limited-use cabins provide just enough space for sleeping and simple meal preparation.

Grounds maintenance: Bluebonnet Ridge RV Park receives consistent praise for upkeep. A visitor observed that "the park was clearly being maintained" and "anytime someone left, or a spot was empty, new gravel was being dumped and leveled." The grass areas are regularly mowed.

Family-friendly amenities: Several parks cater specifically to families with children. Mill Creek Ranch Resort visitors appreciated that "this resort is located close to the Canton First Monday Trades day" and mentioned facilities including "games, fishing, swimming, hiking." The resort rents golf carts for exploring the property.

Wildlife viewing: Parks in the area support diverse wildlife populations. At Thousand Trails Lake Tawakoni, a visitor mentioned they "have a view of the water and wildlife across the road with no sites to impede our view." Wind Point Park campers frequently report seeing "lots of deer" throughout the property.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Cabin availability remains limited, especially during peak seasons. One visitor to Mill Creek Ranch Resort reported the site was "spacious RV resort" with "lots to do" but noted advance planning is essential. The resort requires deposits for cabin rentals.

Weather considerations: Wind and rain can affect camping comfort at certain sites. A Wind Point Park visitor cautioned that "if you camp near the water, it is very windy, especially at night, so make sure to bring plenty of blankets!" Some tent sites flood during heavy rainfall.

Kitchen facilities: Cabin cooking options vary significantly between locations. North Shore Landing cabins provide more cooking amenities than some parks. The campground receives consistent positive reviews, with one visitor noting it's "a very nice, easy access CG with level pull through and back-in gravel sites in a beautiful area."

Proximity to highways: Some campgrounds experience road noise due to nearby highways. A Bluebonnet Ridge visitor warned "you're really close to I-20, you will hear the road noise. Only trucks are loud." This may affect light sleepers in cabins without solid construction.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Tyler State Park Campground offers better playground facilities than other area parks. A visitor stated "the playground is one of the best I've seen at the state parks we've been to!" The park maintains separate play areas for different age groups.

Swimming areas: Several parks offer designated swimming areas during warmer months. At Tyler State Park, campers can enjoy "the lake was perfect and had a nice beach. We were able to rent kayaks and paddle boats." Swimming areas typically open from late May through early September.

Family-friendly trails: Some parks maintain hiking trails suitable for younger children. A Tyler State Park visitor mentioned "the hiking is not the greatest but it was easy enough for my toddler." Most trails are under 2 miles and relatively flat.

Rental options: Dallas-Northeast Campground offers cabin rentals that accommodate families. A visitor observed "they had cute cottages you could rent" and that "children were enjoying the pool, my furbabies enjoyed the large grassy areas around the small fishing lake." Most cottages include small refrigerators and microwave ovens.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Some parks maintain more level sites than others. At Texan RV Park, "the sites are gravel and close together with a small concrete pad and picnic table next to each pad." RVers should bring leveling blocks at most parks.

Seasonal maintenance: Spring and fall typically offer the best camping conditions. A Mill Creek Ranch visitor noted "my kids had fun fishing and playing on the playground" and that the "pad for the RV was level, with a nice amount of space between sites." Most parks perform maintenance during winter months.

Electrical connections: Power supply reliability varies between parks. At Thousand Trails Lake Tawakoni, a visitor cautioned that "as usual for Thousand Trails never enough 50amp hookups." Some cabins share electrical circuits with nearby RV sites.

Water connections: Seasonal freezing affects water availability at some parks. During an extreme cold snap at Thousand Trails Lake Tawakoni, a camper reported "all park water lines froze." Cabin renters should confirm water status during winter reservations.
