Stephen F. Austin State Park Campground

      Pleasant Texas State Park

We had a really nice relaxing stay at Stephen F Austin State Park near San Filepe, Texas. Great little state park easily accessed from I-10. The 38 RV sites are all asphalt pad pull throughs with 30/15 amp electric, water and sewer complete with concrete pad for table, fire pit, lantern and all well spaced for plenty of privacy...big rig friendly. They have an additional 39 tent only sites with water and 25 primitive. Screened shelters are reservable for tent camping with 20 amp electric and water plus one rustic cabin with amenities. There is a$5 daily entrance fee in addition to camping fees. The bathhouse facilities are brand new. It's a small park but they do have five miles of trails for hiking/biking with views of the Brazos River. We enjoyed the wildlife; deer strolling in the campground every morning and evening, birds, rabbits, frogs, turtles, a bobcat and numerous owls. They have a Nature Center; however it was not open during our visit. The park office has a small store with sundries and park souvenirs. The nearby San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site tells the story of early settlers to Texas and is worth a visit. We made a run to the nearby town of Sealy to do a much needed laundry stop...small community with grocery, dining and fuel to meet most needs. Serendipity Bay RV Resort

Peaceful but sites too close together

Very well-maintained and pet-friendly RV park with various amenities such as a pool, fishing pier, and dog park. Sites are very close together with little room to set up outside between RVs. Very little room to park vehicle once RV is in place and limited space to back in. Enjoyed the peaceful sunrises and sunsets and the constant breeze was a plus to keep the humidity and heat down. Take plenty of anti-mosquito repellent, as around mid-morning and late afternoon, the mosquitoes come out in force. A good location for those wishing to fish, but not sightseeing. The town has very few amenities and only a couple of restaurants and small stores.

      Brazos Bend State Park Campground

Ranger Review: Kameng Boots by Mishmi Takin at Brazos Bend State Park

      Campground Review

It's incredible that I was born and raised in Houston and have lived here the past four years but haven't made it out to Brazos Bend State Park until now! A quick, 45 minute drive southwest will get you out of the concrete jungle that is the sprawling Space City metropolis and into one of the lushest, greenest parts of Texas. Brazos Bend is a "Nature Lover's Paradise" - there is abundant wildlife. There is great fishing, ample bird watching, and lots and lots of alligators (!). Lots of trails for walking, running, biking, and horseback riding. The George Observatory is a pretty amazing feature of this park (but only open Saturdays).

We arrived at Brazos Bend on a Friday afternoon and were able to walk-in no problem. Walk-in rate is $12/day + the daily park entrance fee ($5 for adults, free for kids). I have a Texas State Parks Pass so we didn't have to pay the entrance fees (saved us $40 for two nights of camping!). Additionally there were several other great options including: Full-Site RV hook-up ($25/night), Standard Camping ($20/night, incl. water & electricity), and 14 Cabins ($80-200/night but have everything you could ever need or want).

We did a lot of nature walks, game playing, and swimming during our two days at Brazos Bend State Park. Summer is probably not the best time to visit any park in Texas - its hot and muggy and the mosquitos are out in full force. Bring your DEET. Seriously. Despite that though, we were very pleasantly surprised by the amenities (swimming pool, screened in picnic tables, fire pits, and tent pads!)

      Product Review

As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I get products to test from time to time - this past weekend at Brazos Bend I tested out the Kameng Mid eVent Waterproof Hiking Boot by Mishmi Takin.

These boots have got it all.

First, these boots are hella comfortable! I was blown away how comfortable they were right out of the box. Over the years, I've owned many pairs of hiking boots and they all required a significant break-in period. Not these!

Second, they're waterproof AND breathable. Not water resistant, like actually water proof.

Third, the look great. All 3 color schemes are fantastic I had a tough time choosing between green, grey and orange.

Fourth, so lightweight. These only weigh 1.5lbs so even though they are boots, they won't weigh you down.

      5/5 Would Recommend.

Stephen F. Austin State Park Campground

      Nice, Kind of Pricy

We got a spot here for one night with no reservations on a Thursday in late March, but all the spots were booked for the weekend. With taxes and fees the price came to $38 for a night at a FHU site.

All sites are pull through / bump out style. Our spot (#39) wasn't level. Spots come with a picnic table and fire pit.

Firewood and ice for sale here at campground.

Free showers are really nice and clean, look pretty new. Water never got hot for me though.

Friendly rangers at the office when we checked in, and they had lots of cute things to buy at the gift shop.

      Dumpsters and aluminum can recycling.

Ok cell reception, not many bars but both the att and Verizon phone worked fine. We heard the rangers tell other campers that there is free wifi at the campground but we didn't see it pop up when we looked for it.

Lots of nice short hiking trails here throughout the park.

    Guide to Wharton

Cabins near Wharton, Texas are situated in a flat coastal prairie region with elevations averaging around 100 feet above sea level. The area experiences a humid subtropical climate with hot summers where temperatures regularly exceed 90°F and mild winters. Rainfall averages 46 inches annually, creating lush surroundings at many camping areas with mature oak trees providing natural shade at sites like Whispering Oaks RV Park.

    What to do

Wildlife viewing at Brazos Bend State Park: Located 30 miles from Wharton, the park offers opportunities to see alligators and diverse bird species. According to one visitor, "Brazos Bend is known as the Alligator Park…and for good reason! Of you go on a moderate temperature day (this is the key. If it is too hot or cold you won't see Gators) you can see literally dozens of massive alligators. We are talking 6 feet long and right on the pathway."

Stargazing at the observatory: The Brazos Bend State Park Campground features an observatory with weekend hours throughout the year. One camper noted, "The best part of this park is the observatory, which has special events and regular weekend hours pretty much all year. It's absolutely worth staying up late for this!"

Fishing at Lake Texana: The Texana Park & Campground offers excellent fishing opportunities from shoreline or boat. "This is a pretty Texas-y park with a church and event center on site. Nice wetlands, fishing, forests, lake, all very pretty but there are bugs and gators (and deer)," reports one visitor. The lake is stocked and provides options for both experienced and novice anglers.

    What campers like

Swimming amenities at El Campo Lost Lagoon: The El Campo Lost Lagoon features an extensive pool complex with multiple water attractions. A visitor described it as having "a smaller kids area with tons to do and play with and a bigger pool with rock slides, rope swing, swim up bar, lazy river, and plenty of area for people to just lay out."

Private, spacious sites at Texana Park: The campground offers sites with good separation between neighbors. "Lots of privacy, most sites are separated by 15' widths of trees and shrubs which act as a privacy wall. There is a little climbing playground for little ones," reports one visitor. Some sites include direct waterfront access.

Night ambiance at smaller parks: Whispering Oaks RV Park creates a pleasant evening atmosphere with lighting. As one camper noted, "The way the site was set up was truly delightful. Picnic table in just the right place, Oak tree in just the right place, outdoor decorative lighting, awesome fire pit." This attention to detail enhances the camping experience without requiring elaborate setups.

    What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Summer months bring mosquitoes and heat, requiring preparation. "If you go in the summer you need to watch out for mosquitoes," warns a Brazos Bend visitor. At Lake Texana, another camper observed "Alligators in lake!" which requires caution especially during warmer months.

Reservation timing: Many cabin accommodations near Wharton require advance booking, particularly for weekends and summer months. Stephen F. Austin State Park Campground fills quickly, with one visitor noting "The park ranger said we were the first to check in, so we could choose the site we wanted," suggesting early arrivals have advantages.

Accessibility considerations: Not all sites accommodate larger RVs or trailers. At Lake Texana, a visitor observed, "Former Texas State Park so most campsites are short in length. We saw numerous 25ft and bigger rigs struggling to back into sites and then the front of their rig was right on roadway."

Site features vary significantly: From primitive to fully-equipped. "You can't get into this water, pretty murky and lily pads," noted one Lake Texana visitor, highlighting the importance of researching specific features before booking.

    Tips for camping with families

Look for dedicated play areas: Thousand Trails Colorado River provides facilities specifically for children. One visitor mentioned, "They have large FHU sites with 30/50amp and beautiful views! The park is currently being completely overhauled with new sites, hook-ups, roads, community center, offices and more. They have nice amenities such as mini golf, pool, boat launch, pickleball, basketball, trails, etc."

Choose sites with wildlife viewing: Children often enjoy observing local wildlife from safe distances. At Brazos Bend State Park, a camper shared, "Hikes and wildlife are good too, lots of easy trails along water for the kids, cool ponds, great little observation tour to climb."

Consider cabins with nearby amenities: When evaluating cabin rentals near Wharton, look for proximity to recreational facilities. At El Campo Lost Lagoon, a visitor with children reported, "My wife, myself, and our 3 & 2 year olds stayed here for 5 days and had an amazing time. We had a back in site that backed up to a fishing pond. Our site was within walking distance to the pool which was amazing and our kids loved it."

Pack for insect protection: Multiple reviews mention mosquitoes, making insect repellent essential for family comfort. One Lake Texana visitor advised, "You can bring a small pool for the little ones," as an alternative when lake swimming isn't practical.

    Tips from RVers

Full-hookup availability: For extended stays in cabin accommodations or RVs near Wharton, check specific hookup options. At Shiloh RV Park, a visitor noted, "This campground is small, however it is very well shaded and has a great swimming beach. Sites are full hookup!"

Site levelness: Prepare for uneven terrain at some parks. One camper at Lake Texana reported, "Campsite 125 uneven side-to-side," which can impact comfort for both RVs and cabin stays.

Cell service considerations: Coverage varies significantly between parks. At Stephen F. Austin State Park, one RVer observed, "Very wooded, completely dead-flat level site, with electric (30 amp). Beware of fire ants. Woke up to a beautiful fog in morning," but didn't mention cell service—an important detail for those needing connectivity.

Access considerations: Some parks have gate restrictions. The same Stephen F. Austin visitor noted, "Gate open 0800 to 2200," which could impact late arrivals planning to stay in cabins or RVs near Wharton.
