Big Creek Resort, Marina, & Campground

One of my favorite local campgrounds

I like this park because it's close to home. It's got a good space between sites and is broken into 3 or 4 areas so you're not just piled in like sardines. You can being 4-wheeled vehicles that have a steering wheel. No sewer hookups, but there is a dump station. Unfortunately, subsequent major floods have caused them to lose much of the tree cover. It's great when camping in groups though, which we do quite often. All sites have views of the lake. They have a really good fireworks display on 4th of July.

    Type of Park: Private-owned

On the end of the line so no one is on the"front" side of the camper

Good area for camping in groups

Close to good swimming areas and store

👎🏻 Cons: Split-level site- table is down a slight hill from parking area. No shade

Cabins are being refurbished and the equipment and materials are stacked near the site(and some construction noise)

No grill or fire ring at this site

📝 Park Notes: Gates closed and locked from midnight to 6 am on weekends.

Closed at 10 pm on week days.

Can bring golf carts, ATV's(machines with steering wheels, not handle bars)

Dump Station- a little hard to get to for big rigs. Also hard to leave the park from there. You may have to go back into the park to turn around.

Stephen F. Austin State Park Campground

    Pleasant Texas State Park

We had a really nice relaxing stay at Stephen F Austin State Park near San Filepe, Texas. Great little state park easily accessed from I-10. The 38 RV sites are all asphalt pad pull throughs with 30/15 amp electric, water and sewer complete with concrete pad for table, fire pit, lantern and all well spaced for plenty of privacy...big rig friendly. They have an additional 39 tent only sites with water and 25 primitive. Screened shelters are reservable for tent camping with 20 amp electric and water plus one rustic cabin with amenities. There is a$5 daily entrance fee in addition to camping fees. The bathhouse facilities are brand new. It's a small park but they do have five miles of trails for hiking/biking with views of the Brazos River. We enjoyed the wildlife; deer strolling in the campground every morning and evening, birds, rabbits, frogs, turtles, a bobcat and numerous owls. They have a Nature Center; however it was not open during our visit. The park office has a small store with sundries and park souvenirs. The nearby San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site tells the story of early settlers to Texas and is worth a visit. We made a run to the nearby town of Sealy to do a much needed laundry stop...small community with grocery, dining and fuel to meet most needs. Lake Somerville State Park Birch Creek Unit Campground

Nice park with green space between sites

    • Water

    • 20/30 amp(had 50 amp outlet, but only 20& 30 breakers)

    • Grill

    • Fire Ring with adjustable height grate

    • Picnic Table

    • Site Pad: asphalt. Site was just long enough for my 24' camper and my truck and not much room between.

    👍🏻 Pros:

    • Near the water with a trail to get there

    • Green space between the site and neighbors

    • Good kayaking area

    👎🏻 Cons:

    • The spot is tight getting in. My 10' high camper had low hanging branches on it(but they were soft, not stiff). Lots of vines/shrubs across from the site, so no extra room there.

    📝 Park Notes:

    • Dump Station for each camping loop

    • Restrooms/ Bath House

    • Boat ramp

    • Fishing jetty (pier is closed)

    • This campground is better for winter camping. Great buffer from wind and neighbors. Only a handful of sites have direct access to the water.

    • Lots of trails

    • There are Munzees and Geocaches here

    • Group pavilion/kitchen available

    • 2 group shelters available

🐦 Wildlife:• Birds: Shore birds, egrets, herons, cardinals, mockingbirds

    • Raccoons(I saw their tracks, but not the critters)

More info an video at https://www.denisevajdak.com/2021/08/my-birthday-weekend-2021.html

Site 23 was better (stayed in this one twice). Wider, nice view of lake. Not very long, but easier to get into.

Stephen F. Austin State Park Campground

    Okay State Park

Got to the park around 2:00 PM and pulled up to the stop sign in the second lane to use the bathroom and check in. Found out from a not-so-kind park ranger that we could not park and loiter at the front of the office building. There was a sign to that effect that we missed as most state parks have you park in front of the check in office and there wasn't really anywhere else to park with our 39' fifth wheel in tow. Check in was alright, but there was confusion concerning our Texas State Park passes for Disabled Veterans, which we both received a few years ago at another Texas State Park. For our stay here, only one person's pass was accepted and that pass was good for 1.5 people. Another employee thought we should each be covered with our passes and tried to add the additional pass in the system, but since we were camping, versus day use in a car, we could only use one. So, we had to pay$7.50 park pass for our 3 nites stay. Then she had to show the young man checking us in the rule book that showed we were entitled to the pass even though we were non-residents. This is the first time our passes weren't accepted to cover us both. After that we headed to pull through site 21 with FHUs but only 30 AMP. The wood posts and trees in this site determine how/where you park your rig. We needed our 15’ sewer hose and used a donut as there’s no screw in for the sewer connection. Water pressure was okay at around 40 psi. We got quite a few OTA channels and 3 bars on Verizon having no problem with internet and making calls using our MiFi. Most of the sites here are very spacious and well laid out so your neighbors are not close to you. Site 21 is one of the most spacious and we had no problem fitting our 39’ 5th wheel and F-450 on the pad. The restrooms/shower house in the RV area was clean and there was ice for sale at that location. What we really enjoyed about this park was the abundant hiking trails that interweave with each other. We thought the golf course in the park would be open, but it had been sold to a private owner and would hopefully open to the public in a month or so. The camp hosts were very friendly and helpful. Overall, we enjoyed our 3 night’s stay.

    Lockhart State Park Campground

Lockhart State Park + Family Activities + BBQ

Lockhart State Park is a small park with simple facilities, but they do have a golf course and some of the best BBQ in Texas nearby.

The park is located a short distance from the town of Lockhart and about 40 minutes from Austin. The park has all the basic amenities like campsites with water, electricity, picnic tables, grills and fire rings. There are a few short trails to explore. For the family there is a swimming pool and little playground. Perhaps one of the unique features of this park is that there is a 9 hole golf course within the park.

Some of the facilities feel a bit dated. However, if you're looking for a relaxing time with family friendly activities this park might work for you.

Before or after your stay at Lockhart State Park be sure to pass through the town of Lockhart (nicknamed the BBQ Capitol of Texas) where you can choose between three of the best barbecue restaurants in Texas - Blacks BBQ, Smitty's BBQ and Kreuzs BBQ.

Stephen F. Austin State Park Campground

    Nice, Kind of Pricy

We got a spot here for one night with no reservations on a Thursday in late March, but all the spots were booked for the weekend. With taxes and fees the price came to $38 for a night at a FHU site.

All sites are pull through / bump out style. Our spot (#39) wasn't level. Spots come with a picnic table and fire pit.

Firewood and ice for sale here at campground.

Free showers are really nice and clean, look pretty new. Water never got hot for me though.

Friendly rangers at the office when we checked in, and they had lots of cute things to buy at the gift shop.

    Dumpsters and aluminum can recycling.

Ok cell reception, not many bars but both the att and Verizon phone worked fine. We heard the rangers tell other campers that there is free wifi at the campground but we didn't see it pop up when we looked for it.

Lots of nice short hiking trails here throughout the park.

Guide to La Grange

RV sites near La Grange, Texas offer camping options in Central Texas hill country along the Colorado River. The area receives around 37 inches of rainfall annually with summer temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F from June through September. Several campgrounds provide river access, though water levels can fluctuate seasonally affecting fishing and boating opportunities.

What to do

Fishing access: Thousand Trails Colorado River provides multiple fishing spots including the Colorado River and two stocked ponds. "We love it here. Right on the Colorado river plus two ponds to fish in. Lots of places to walk or ride your bikes," notes one camper who particularly enjoyed the fishing variety.

Historic site visits: Several painted churches and German-Czech cultural sites are within 20 minutes of camping areas. A visitor at Schulenburg RV Park shared they stayed "while touring the nearby Shiner brewery and the historic old churches in the area," adding the campground is "within walking distance to downtown, which offers a few pretty good restaurants."

Wildlife viewing: The area hosts abundant wildlife with deer being particularly common at many campsites. One camper at Thousand Trails Colorado River mentioned, "Yes, there's not a lot of spaces between spots like there are in most state parks, but the residents are quiet. We had space D25 which is on the outside of the big loop by the river and boat ramp... When they talk about deer being everywhere, they ain't kidding."

What campers like

Quiet atmosphere: Whispering Oaks RV Park receives praise for its peaceful setting despite highway proximity. "What a quiet and peaceful camp. Even though its springbreak and lots of kids, everyone is very respectful of their neighbors," commented one visitor who appreciated the tranquility.

Clean facilities: Several parks maintain well-kept shower and bathroom facilities. At River Forest Haven, a visitor noted, "The people who staff this park could not work harder to make your stay incredible. We really enjoyed tubing and fishing, but the campfires were the best. The staff will deliver a generous amount of dry fire wood for $15."

Pet accommodations: Many RV parks provide dedicated pet areas or pet-friendly policies. One camper at Whispering Oaks RV Park appreciated "the DOG Park! What a wonderful amenity with the automatic lights for after dark. Park was very clean and quiet."

What you should know

Site variations: River Forest Haven features a mix of site types with varying levels of privacy. "Super cool to get tucked into the woods. Some of the spots are secluded and others aren't... Down side is it isn't assigned sites, so if your self contained like my van we went out for the day and came back to someone set up in our spot," explained one visitor.

Accessibility considerations: Not all facilities have equal accessibility features. A visitor to Old Town Market & RV Park noted, "The lip going into the women's bathroom is doable I believe for anybody, but coming out the lip is pretty high around 2 inches to 2 1/2 inches. They have a low grade step in shower with grab bars and a pull down shower bench with the showerhead actually placed where you can reach it."

Weather impact: Seasonal conditions can affect camping experiences. A camper at River Forest Haven mentioned, "It was pretty quiet except for the cars on the nearby road... It smelled a bit swampy," indicating that humidity and recent rainfall can change comfort levels at some sites.

Tips for camping with families

Water recreation options: River Forest Haven offers family-friendly tubing opportunities. "The tubing is great for people with children who don't necessarily want to go tubing two to four hours... Very short route but water safety should be practiced as it is very deep in some areas," advised one visitor, making it suitable for families with younger children.

Playground quality varies: Check recent reviews before promising playground time to children. At Thousand Trails Colorado River, a visitor cautioned, "It is advertised with a lot of facilities but the most, like the playground and mini-golf need immediate attention. I took my granddaughter to the playground and can't use it (old and broken)."

Weekend events: Some campgrounds organize weekend activities. At Iron Horse RV Resort, a camper shared, "Saturday night (for the Labor Day weekend) they brought in a band - they were wonderful. There is a cute boutique on site with adorable clothes, boots and accessories."

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Be prepared to adjust your position at some RV campsites. One visitor to Flatonia RV Ranch mentioned, "Sites are gravel/rock with grassy areas adjacent. Not perfectly level, but we wiggled the trailer around a bit in the spot until we got close."

Long-term residents: Several RV parks near La Grange have a mix of travelers and permanent residents. A camper at Giddings RV Park noted, "Concrete pads summer very level especially in the older portion the newer edition is a little more rolling hills nice facilities showers Wi-Fi was great."

Road access: Some parks have tight interior roads. At Whispering Oaks RV Park, visitors noted, "It was tight to get down the roads leading to our spot but navigational if you went slow."
