Ray Roberts Lake State Park's Isle du Bois unit includes horse corrals for overnight equestrian campers, providing trail access for riders seeking extended adventures. Sites accommodate both horses and camping equipment with adequate space for horse trailer parking. The park maintains natural terrain suitable for horses with a mix of open fields and wooded trails. Electric hookups and water access points serve equestrian campsites, allowing riders to maintain comfortable accommodations while tending to their animals. Sites feature picnic tables, fire rings, and nearby restroom facilities with showers.

Equestrians access over 20 miles of interconnected bridle trails from the camping area, allowing for varied riding experiences through diverse Texas terrain. Trails connect riders to scenic lake views and woodland paths suitable for various skill levels. Horse owners should bring their own feed, as park regulations prohibit grazing on native vegetation. Manure disposal areas are designated throughout the equestrian camping section. Reservations are recommended, especially during peak seasons when equestrian sites fill quickly. The park requires proof of negative Coggins test for all horses, and camping with pets is permitted according to standard park regulations. Trail conditions remain accessible year-round, though summer heat may necessitate early morning or evening rides.

Isle du Bois Campsites β€” Ray Roberts Lake State Park

Bring your horse to Isle du Bois unit - Roberts Lake State Park

Roberts Lake State Park has two main campgrounds, the Isle du Bois unit and Johnson unit. These are what I would call twins. They are very similar in layout, scenery and activities. They are on opposite sides of the lake.

Isle du Bois is a little different in that it has legitimate equestrian camp sites with horse pens built into each site. The park has several equestrian trails and is perfect if you like to ride and camp with your horse.

The rest of the park has several walk-in camp sites and then a section for campers and RV's. It is a good park and I would normally rate this park as a three but I think that all of the equestrian activities and amenities for horses moves it up to a four.

      Just far enough

This place is just far enough from DFW to not be to far. Great place to camp, fish and hike. Bring your horses for a equestrian trail as well. Great beach for some sand castles and swimming. And don't forget to hit the Dam store and get the dam special. Good burgers there.

      Holiday Park Campground

      Surprising Off-Highway Park

I chose this campground for its proximity to Fort Worth, and the lake. Just far enough off the highway to diminish all noise, surrounded by hiking trails, is the well maintained Holiday Park. Offering both water and electric hookups for RVs, some with a cabin included, alongside standard campsites right at the lake shore. Bathrooms are simple, fully functional, and never too far from any site. Sites are all a good size and not too close to neighbors. Nature/Horse trails line the park, and it's fairly quiet. There's some occasional aircraft noise, but no noise from the highway. The ranger station is well staffed and by the book, all the sites are visibly well maintained, cleaned regularly.

      Brockdale Park

      Not a campsite

Equestrian trail and boat launch. This is big parking lot for a boat launch on Lake Lavon and a large Equestrian trail. No camping sites but we have done a picnic here. It’s a few minutes from our home.

Plateau β€” Lake Mineral Wells State Park

      Clean, beautiful and serene

Late in the day we stopped at Lake Mineral Wells State Park, TX. We weren't sure where to go as the gate was unmanned at our arrival. We missed the turn to the campground, but a friendly and helpful Texas State Park Officer directed us how to get there. He helped us with how to make payment as well.Β

The campground was beautiful. It was quiet, the bathrooms were clean, and the lake was serene. There are at least 3 campgrounds, including shelters, equestrian, a loop for tenters, and a loop for larger rigs.Β  We stayed in the Plateau loop. Even though we only stayed one night, I would go back.

      Tadra Point Trailhead & Campground

      Easy access with hiking/horse trails

We enjoyed our overnight stay near the trailhead. We weren't sure about the accessibility to the trailhead road with our 23 foot travel trailer so we opted to stay off road 904, where the horse trailers park, since there were some nice flat spots. Since we were just staying overnight as we were traveling back to the Midwest we didn't check out the other options. We did call the park Ranger and he said the trailhead is a great place to camp and easy to access with a trailer. Our hot spot on our cell phone was slow since we only had a couple bars, but we were able to get our work done. I would stay here again. We enjoyed a nice hike in the morning before we headed out.

      COE Lavon Lake Lavonia

      Great for something close by

Nothing to knock you socks off, but it’s a great campsite close to home and nice for a quick getaway. Has the feel of being somewhat remote since it’s out by the lake.

We’ve camped in the site with the horse stables and put the tents with questionable rain flys in the horse stable.

Johnson Branch Campsites β€” Ray Roberts Lake State Park

      Beautiful lake, OK campground

We found Lake Ray Roberts as a nice swimming spot near Dallas to go cool down during the hot Texas summers and we LOVE it to go grill and hang out as a day long activity. So when my husband and I decide to start camping πŸ• we chose this park as our first trial, and we found it a bit inconvenient for Car camping since the spots are walk up and you gotta leave your car behind in a parking lot. Also, is very primitive style, so clean bathrooms and close-by water is not really part of the package. We loved the view from our spot and if you are up for a primitive experience within a park, then this is great. Just not for us and the type of camping we wanna do 😊

Isle du Bois Campsites β€” Ray Roberts Lake State Park

      Free Fishing!

The first thing that brought me here was the option to fish without a license! It's been several years now since my wife and I stayed here the first time. It's a good size park with several options for activities: boating, fishing, picnicking, equestrian, hiking, camping, etc. The trails are thorough through the park. The lakefront is great as it gives you a good sense of the size of the lake. I'm looking forward to our next stay here!

    Tips from RVers

Site selection: Look for level pads with appropriate hookup options. "Large park with a variety of campsites. Shaded areas available. Very clean," notes Karen B. about Cedar Hill State Park, emphasizing site diversity.

Hookup availability: Full hookups aren't available at all campgrounds. "Would rate it a 5 star if it had full hookups but we had to use the dump station," explains Cactus A. about Loyd Park, noting the facility limitations.

Pull-through access: Some sites accommodate larger rigs without backing in. "The park had absolutely no signs indicating where the campground is," Caroline D. cautions about Cedar Hill State Park, noting navigation challenges for RVs.

Seasonal considerations: Summer heat impacts comfort levels in RVs without adequate shade. "Some sites are 50 amp, while all are for 30 amp. Larger rigs are more accommodated next to the lake. But call ahead to see which sites have 50 amp, you'll need it in summer time," advises John B. about staying comfortable at Loyd Park.
