Water levels in Lake Buchanan fluctuate seasonally, affecting shoreline access and boat launching conditions.
What to do
Water activities at Devil's Waterhole: Inks Lake State Park features popular swimming spots with natural stone features. "The best swimming place is the Devil's Waterhole. There are some rocks on the far side that people climb up on to jump off of," notes Brian V. about Inks Lake State Park.
Stargazing opportunities: Canyon of the Eagles offers professional astronomy experiences. "They have a professional observatory with two telescopes and an astronomer giving lessons. We are now considering trying to plan a stargazing sleepover," reports Stephanie B. from Canyon of the Eagles Lodge & Nature Park.
Off-road trail riding: Hidden Falls Adventure Park provides trails for various experience levels. "They have everything from primitive dispersed tent camping to RV site hook ups all the way up to a $600 per night cabin. They have excellent off road trails for stock trucks up to rock crawling rigs," shares Jerry P.
What campers like
Privacy between sites: Black Rock Park offers well-spaced campsites. "The campsites are well spaced and have full hookups and a nice table and fire ring. It has lake front, kayak rentals, and a mini golf course," says Laura F. about Black Rock Park.
Lake access: Big Chief RV Resort provides direct waterfront camping. "We had a pull through water view which was great, the lake is gorgeous, park is super clean and staff was friendly. So many awesome state parks nearby to visit, definitely will be returning," reports Charlie H. from Big Chief RV Resort.
Year-round camping options: Pedernales Falls State Park offers camping in all seasons. "This park has always been a favorite central texas spot to go to. We've camped with scouts, camped as a family and camped with friends. A camping staple for us," shares Faith S.
What you should know
Reservation requirements: Cabin bookings fill quickly during peak seasons. "Canyon of the Eagles is a beautiful preserve with many available activities....hiking, biking, kayaking, bird watching, & star gazing to name a few. We stayed in the RV loop and the sites were mostly level with hookups and privacy," notes Catherine at Pedernales Falls State Park Campground.
Site conditions: Lake levels impact shoreline accessibility. "Nice kept park. On a point on the lake, super windy, no protection from the wind. Lady at the front gate was really rude. Need more bathrooms. Park had nice beaches and clean campsites. Each camp site had plenty of room in between," writes Elijah A.
Alcohol restrictions: Some campgrounds prohibit alcohol consumption. "NOT A DARK SKY FRIENDLY CAMPGROUND! Numerous street lights throughout this camping loop and unfortunately we had one directly across from our site#11 which lit up our site like daylight! Who camps under a street light???" comments Napunani.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly swimming areas: Several parks offer shallow water access. "We had a large campsite that fit two large tents and 3 hammocks. The hiking was great and this place was very family friendly. You can also stay at the resort but we camped. There was a nice lake with kayaks to rent and a sandy beach for the kiddos to play," says Sarah J.
Educational programming: Look for naturalist-led activities. "The naturalist on staff gave fishing lessons to the kids, had a craft for them to do and talked about the native flowers. We were able to rent kayaks to take out into the lake. The lake was gorgeous," recommends Stephanie B.
Safety considerations: Monitor weather warnings carefully. "Respect weather warnings!" emphasizes Faith S., adding "Made me aware of how serious flash flooding is here."
Tips from RVers
Site selection strategies: Choose sites based on shade needs. "We stayed in slot 41 right next to the office. Campground is clean and quiet. It sits right on the lake. Will stay again," advises Janet B. about Oasis Lake Buchanan, LLC.
Utility connections: Most lakeside cabin rentals offer full hookups. "Most sites had 2 sewer hookups. Most sites had a nice distance from neighbor sites. Crushed granite surrounds the site parking pad so no muddy mess after rain," notes Napunani.
Campsite elevation: Many sites require leveling equipment. "Good condition asphalt site parking pad was uneven side-to-side as we noticed nearly all sites in that condition with all requiring leveling," warns Napunani about Black Rock Park.
