CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Shellmound RV Resort and Campground in Jasper provides electric hookups, water connections, and full bathrooms with showers for RV campers. The resort's sites sit near Nickajack Lake with spacious, level gravel spots suitable for larger motorhomes, though no sewer hookups are available at individual sites. "RV spots are a little uneven, but spacious. Clean park, regular maintenance," noted a visitor from The Dyrt. River Life RV Resort features electric and sewer hookups with water connections in a picturesque setting along the river gorge. Bigfoot Adventure RV Park and Campground in Tracy City accommodates big rigs with 35 full-service sites including 50-amp electrical service, water, and sewer connections on open, easily accessible pads.

Most RV parks in the Whitwell region remain open year-round, though fall foliage season attracts higher visitation. Shellmound provides a dump station within the park for guests lacking sewer hookups at individual sites. Cell service varies throughout the mountainous terrain, with stronger signals near Jasper and more limited connectivity in remote areas near Foster Falls. Navigation to some campgrounds requires careful driving on mountain roads with elevation changes. Pets are generally welcome at area RV parks, with Bigfoot Adventure and River Life both offering pet-friendly policies. Propane is not available on-site at most parks, so travelers should fill tanks in nearby towns before arrival.

    Rvino - The Broken Banjo

    Love this place

I stayed in spot 8 during the Coronavirus lockdown. The staff is very friendly. It’s near I-24 which makes getting places easy. It will be noisy if you are sound sensitive. It is well maintained. The laundry room is great. You can get anything you need from the store. Perfect pull through sites for a big rig overnight stop. Great sites with picnic table, fire pits for longer stays. Nice pool, sparkling clean restrooms. The dogs loved the dog park. The amenities for kids are great. Highly recommend.

    Chattanooga North-Cleveland KOA

    Clean, Quiet, Friendly

Friendly Staff, Clean Bathrooms, Convenient Location. No honeywagon for water and electric only sites, but dump station in campground. Some very nice private sites and none of the sites except maybe a few look very small or tight- pretty spread out. Lots of tent sites. You definitely hear the highway here, but not a big concern for us. Pet friendly with a very nice dog park. Pool for the kids. Playground is little more than a residential style wood swingset, but it kept the kids entertained.

Mountain Glen RV Park & Campground

    The Best of the Best!

Mountain Glen is a hidden gem! If you are traveling through eastern TN or just looking for a place to park your RV for a few weeks or longer of peaceful quiet then you have to stay here. I've stayed in RV parks across 38 states and never found cleaner bathrooms, friendlier customer service, or faster WiFi (and that's important since I work remotely!) than what Mountain Glen RV Park offers. They've also got great water pressure, easy pull-throughs, after-hour check-in options, and a convenient store in case you forgot some essentials. In addition to the great amenities, you'll be greeted by rolling scenic vistas of beautiful countryside, having fishing opportunities, pavilion or indoor meeting room to hang out with friends, playground for the kids, and pet friendly areas for your dogs to enjoy.

Mountain Glen is definitely a must-stay and the best of the best of all the RV parks and campgrounds I've ever stayed at!

Fairview Campground — Tims Ford State Park

    Camp by the Lake!

You can camp by the water at Tim’s Ford Lake. Some sites have full hook up’s up to 50 amp. Sewer hook up is not available at the water sites. We enjoy this campground. Great for kayaking and fishing. Family friendly.
35’ Fifth Wheel was a breeze at most sites, a couple sites may be tight.

    DeSoto State Park Campground

    Very quiet and relaxing

Desoto State Park is on top of Lookout Mountain about 8 miles northeast of Fort Payne, In Northeast Alabama. DeSoto Falls - also part of DeSoto State Park - is located about 7 miles north of the park near Mentone, Alabama. The Campground has 94 full-hookup tent and RV sites. Most are Back-In Sites, with a few Pull-Thru. All sites have water, & electric, and sewer. They are about 16 feet by 60 feet deep with 50/30 Amp Service, Cable TV.
There are picnic tables and Grills on each site. There are two large bathroom/shower buildings with coin-operated laundry. There is a Wi-fi hotspots at each bathhouse (wifi does not reach to every campsite) There are also Primitive Camping sites for tents as well as two back country campsites with shelters. Along with camping, Kayaking, fishing, hiking, biking, cycling, rappelling, bouldering and picnicking are popular.

    Battlefield Campground & RV Park

    Woodsy Wayside

Battlefield Campground is an extremely convenient RV park located right of I-75 about 20 minutes south of Chattanooga. It is very easy to get to, but part of that convenience comes with an absence of quiet; the interstate runs directly beside the campground, and is visible from the storage sites across from sites 11-24.

This is an excellent place for long-term campers, and it includes a nice playground, a pool, and a camp store/clubhouse. We could not get close to the pool or playground as they were closed due to COVID-19, which was comforting that they are taking public safety seriously. Sites include 50 and 30 amp full service, and seven tent sites in the middle of the campground that also include electric. There are seven camping cabins spaced throughout the campground that have outside picnic tables and grills, and beds inside as well as electricity.

Most of the sites here are nicely wooded, and as the area is slightly hilly there are elevation changes between several rows of sites which allows for a little more privacy than many RV parks offer.

Downsides to this park are the highway noise, and the campground roads are paved but in need of maintenance; the road is eroded in a lot of places.

Upsides are the sites are shady and well landscaped, and there are great amenities for families looking to stay here for extended periods of time, as well as the proximity to Chattanooga, Chickamauga Battlefield, and Ringold/Ft. Oglethorpe.

    DeSoto State Park Campground

    A Family Favorite

Desoto State Park is one of our favorite Alabama places to visit, located in Northeastern Alabama and the southern end of Lookout Mountain. We try to camp here in the spring and fall each year when available, the closest towns are Fort Payne and Mentone. There are ample shopping areas and restaurants in Fort Payne which is about 10 miles from the campground if you need to make the trip down. The park has so much to offer and the staff there goes the extra effort to ensure your stays are pleasant and enjoyable. The hiking trails are abundant throughout the park, the Scout Trail is our favorite as it winds next to the river banks and over numerous rocks and scenic water features. This trail can be physically challenging and be sure to verify the river levels beforehand.

The campground is well maintained and the sites are level for the most part, our favorite site is 25 but we’ve stayed in several others end enjoyed those as well. The sites in the upper and lower loops are mostly back in sites with a couple of pull through and buddy sites also. The middle section is all pull through sites for the large coaches and 5th wheel RV’s. All sites at Desoto are equipped with water, electric, sewer, cable TV, table, fire ring and grills. The bath houses are some of the cleanest we’ve seen, relatively new with excellent amenities including laundry. There is also WIFI broadcast at each of the bath houses.

There is a great lodge restaurant, cabins old and new, swimming pool, tennis courts, Zip Line and a CCC museum. Put this one on your list as it’s never disappointed our family. The Little River Canyon Preserve is nearby with additional hiking and fantastic Canyon vistas you will have to go see.

The falls themselves were pretty incredible and there is some great hiking in the area. Make sure to do the whole loop so that you can appreciate the rock formations and cliffs," shares Asher K. from Greeter Falls Campground.

Fishing opportunities: Several campgrounds provide fishing access. "Had a blast fishing in the ponds. Didn't get a chance to zip line but looks like a blast. They seem to be adding things… disc golf maybe," reports Frank A. about his stay at Bigfoot Adventure RV Park.

What campers like

Proximity to water: Many campsites offer quick access to swimming areas. "There is a swimming area that you can walk to which is nice," mentions Haley B. about Shellmound RV Resort & Campground. Another camper noted, "You're next to a dock on the TN River, so water activities were easy & fun!"

Clean bathhouses: Facilities at newer campgrounds receive positive feedback. "Very clean bath house and grounds. Friendly staff inside small camp store. Spacious sites," writes Jennifer U. about Greeter Falls Campground.

Scenic water views: Several RV parks feature prime waterfront locations. "The most stunning views of the river gorge! The owners are amazing & so helpful!" notes Audra R. about River Life RV Resort.

What you should know

First-come camping options: Some campgrounds don't accept reservations. "Make sure you call the morning of to make sure there is a spot open before driving down. They don't do reservations, which I really wish they did. But they will put a cone in your site if you call that morning," advises Haley B. about Shellmound RV Resort.

Site measurements matter: Check site dimensions before booking. "Be sure to check the site measurements. Our only complaint was the site size & distance to our neighbor. We stayed at primitive site 1. Flat area for your tent, then a slight slope towards the walkway," warns Karlie from Greeter Falls Campground.

Interstate noise: Some RV parks near Whitwell sit close to highways. "Interstate noise is annoying," notes Ginger G. about Battlefield Campground. Consider requesting sites furthest from roadways if noise concerns you.

Tips for camping with families

Kids' amenities vary: Some campgrounds offer more for children than others. "There's not much for kids to do but he doesn't mind a blow up pool as long as it isn't in the grass. There's also a scavenger hunt he put out that's super fun!!" shares Elizabeth L. about R&R RV Campground.

Playgrounds and swimming: Several campgrounds feature dedicated play areas. "The playground for the kids was awesome! You're next to a dock on the TN River, so water activities were easy & fun!" notes Adam A. about Shellmound RV Resort.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Kids can interact with animals at some locations. "I saw a deer on the way to the bathroom," reports Michelle P. about Greeter Falls. At R&R RV Campground, "There are horses on both sides of the park, the owner feeds them will allow your children to feed with him (pretty cool I thought)."

Tips from RVers

Hookup locations: Pay attention to utility placement when setting up. "All sites are pull-in with full (50 amp) hook-ups on the left side," notes Susan & Kevin W. about Twin Creeks RV Resort, which affects how you position your RV.

Leveling requirements: Many RV sites in the area require adjustments. "Our rv sites were gravel, required some leveling, had FHUs. 50/30/20 amp service, water and sewer of course. All worked great, no issues," reports Thomas H. about Greeter Falls Campground.

Late check-in options: Some RV parks near Whitwell accommodate late arrivals. "We called at 9:30pm to see if we could book a reservation and pay with cash. It was a 2 hour drive from where we got married. Got here close to midnight and they had a yurt ready for us," shares Brandi Y. about Greeter Falls Campground.
