      Mountain River Family Campground

Pristine, friendly, communal, peaceful campground on the river!

This campground was pristine - from the moment we turned the corner, until the moment we left!

We met Kimberly within seconds of pulling on the property.  She was incredibly kind and made us feel at home immediately.  As tent campers, she told us our best choices were a 30 amp site on the river ($50) or a 30-amp site off the river ($44).  These prices are steep for tent camping, but include 2 adults, kids and pets.  Additional adults come with a fee, but we were happy the kids were included.  Not only were the pets included, but they have a dog park area that they can run free and stretch their legs!

We came into the cute little office where Kimberly gave us a campground map (which was painted by a resident camper glass blower) and told us about her property. Several items were on sale inside the store, including many shirts, sweatshirts, hats, etc. They also sell kids fishing poles, stickers and even a fresh coffee cup machine.  They have recently renovated the bathhouse (wait until you see it!) they have a library with books and games, an outdoor sink to wash dishes etc. and even a laundry room that operates on the honor system.  How great is that!  I thought it was wonderful that we could wash a wet sleeping bag or a quick load of stinky hiking clothes if necessary!  Kimberly explained that they have a pretty good mix of short and long term campers (primarily RV's) and even a cute little cabin that can be rented.

Kimberly said that they choose not to allow on-line bookings to maintain the atmosphere that they desire.  You can call, or submit a request, but they want to have a conversation with you before booking.  The campground was calm, friendly and so so clean.  Campers were friendly, the campground host was as kind as could be, and so proud about her new bathrooms.  (See below).  This is the kind of campground we would feel good about our kids biking around in the evening as they chase fire flies and meet new friends!

The campground was located on the river, but the slope was challenging from several sites.  With kiddos, I may prefer a site closer to the road because it was nearly a flat walk out to the river.  We will surely be back!

      Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground

Not quite great for a senior

Great and clean unless you have a very active dog and you're sorta out of shape. Their dog park extremely small and hilly and has holes you need to watch. The yellow jackets were terrible and I got stung while just sitting at our site. Also a hike to take garbage to their dumpster. Some sort of pickup or maybe bear proof cans half way point, also more flat area for dog walks. If they would take in some of the area around the horse shoe area that would help too .

Down by the River Campground - 55+

Everything you need in a campground

I’m not even sure you can call this a campground! A majority of those staying here were in top of the line campers. It truly felt like a community. There are two bath houses, a dog park, an activity center, and a river flowing behind the sites. It was beautiful and had a cheery atmosphere. They even had WiFi! I was definitely spoiled here.

Linville Falls Campground — Blue Ridge Parkway

      Loved it!

Great campground! We are tent campers and loved our time here! There are A LOT of spots in a small area. That would be my only complaint if you want to call it that. The campgrounds clean and the owners are super nice and helpful. We have a dog and love the dog park! The bathrooms are very clean and nice! I would definitely recommend this campground!

      Mountain Stream RV Park

      Small, beautiful campgroud

Really beautiful spot. It's one small loop with around 30 sites, as well as 3 luxury yurts. Very level w/ nice gravel, fire pits & picnic tables. A nice big creek runs behind most of the campsites. There's a playground for the kids and a little fenced in dog park, too (it even has a nice dog wash station!). Beautifully landscaped with lots of flowers, bird feeders and little white lights at night. The bathhouse was clean and there's a nice picnic shelter. The camp store has basic necessities (even local, fresh eggs). Blue Ridge Parkway isn't far. We recommend the hike to Crabtree Falls! Only con is that the sites are very close together.

      Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground

      Mountain top oasis!

We stayed here and LOVED it! Tucked away into the mountains not far from the interstate, super quiet and nicely taken care of. Has mountain top views that are spectacular at sunset, campground is pet friendly with a dog run area. Multiple bath houses all with nicely done showers and bathrooms that are clean. Laundry facility was very nice too. Would stay again!

      Mountain Stream RV Park

The rushing stream was the perfect white noise for a restful night.

This place is lovely, an idyllic setting, wonderful hosts, very clean facilities, and a great location to explore the area. We spent 2 nights here and loved our site, the deck over the rushing stream was a perfect place to sip coffee in the mornings and whiskey in the evenings. The dog park gave our pup the chance to run free, the clean bathhouses gave us a place to freshen up and the location gave us the ability to explore all Asheville had to offer, climb to the top of Mount Mitchell (the highest point East of the Mississippi) and just enjoy the surroundings. Our site had a full hook up, electric and water (even with temps in the low 20's at night), we had a fire ring (or square), a picnic table perched on the deck, cantilevered over the stream, and lovely (back-in) site with privacy and shade. We can't wait to come back.

    Guide to Milligan College

The Cherokee National Forest and Appalachian foothills surrounding Milligan College maintain cooler temperatures than surrounding lowlands, averaging 8-12 degrees cooler in summer months. Campgrounds in this area sit between 1,600-3,000 feet elevation, creating distinct microclimates where morning fog often lingers in valleys until mid-morning. Most campsites feature gravel pads with natural dirt tent spaces that drain well after rainfall.

    What to do

Creek fishing access: Rock Creek Recreation Area offers excellent trout fishing opportunities directly from the campground. One visitor noted, "husband did catch a rainbow trout near group tent sites. Several small brookies near the history center" while camping at nearby Roan Mountain State Park.

Lakeside water activities: Cardens Bluff Campground provides direct water access for kayaking and swimming. A camper shared, "There are many spots within a 5-10 minute drive that are great for day use with access to the lake, and picnic areas."

Mountain hiking trails: The area offers multiple hiking difficulty levels connecting to the Appalachian Trail. A visitor to Dennis Cove Campground explained, "Hiking to waterfalls that are close and to the Appalachian Trail which is also close by is a fun and easy escape."

    What campers like

Natural sound barriers: Many campsites feature ambient water sounds that create privacy. A camper at Camp Stonefly described, "We parked with van doors opened to the bubbling creek and had the natural white noise as a backdrop all night."

Clean facilities: The campgrounds maintain well-serviced bathrooms despite their rustic settings. One visitor to Blackberry Blossom Farm Campground noted, "I have never been to a cleaner, more beautiful campground in my life. The facilities are up to date, the bathhouse is spotless... I found the dishwashing station (with hot water!) to be especially convenient."

Lakeside views: Multiple campgrounds offer water-facing sites. A Little Oak Campground visitor shared, "Little oak offered a great place to stay for a week. With south Holston lake at your finger tips it offers a great area to fish, boat, kayak, paddle board and swim."

    What you should know

Site selection challenges: Many campgrounds have variable site sizes requiring careful booking. At Warriors' Path State Park, a camper warned, "There are a lot of uneven campsites, so bring your leveling blocks... pay attention to the site size as some RVs had issues getting their larger RVs in their sites."

Weather preparation: Higher elevation campsites experience significant temperature drops after sunset. A Roan Mountain visitor observed, "Restrooms were nice and warm, appreciated thanks to cold fall temps."

Road access conditions: Some campgrounds have challenging access roads. A visitor to Dennis Cove Recreation Area cautioned, "The road up is good but extremely tight and windy at points so beware a wide trailer if you aren't used to this type of mountain driving."

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly water features: Several dog friendly campgrounds near Milligan College offer safe water play areas. At Little Oak Campground, a camper reported, "Very kid-friendly super spacious campsites every site is right on the lake with amazing sunsets every night."

Playground access: Some campgrounds include dedicated children's play areas. A Warriors' Path visitor noted their park "has a Boundless Playground" convenient to campsites.

Educational opportunities: Roan Mountain State Park Campground offers family programming. A visitor shared, "The park also has events scheduled. They had a cloggers dance group when we were there, which was very nice."

    Tips from RVers

Campsite leveling: Bring leveling equipment as many sites have uneven surfaces. A Warriors' Path camper advised, "Really nice facility near town. There are a lot of uneven campsites, so bring your leveling blocks."

Limited full-hookup options: Most pet-friendly campgrounds near Milligan College provide partial hookups only. A Woodsmoke Campground visitor noted, "Quiet, wooded sites with full RV hook up. Nice large sites and private," making it one of the few with complete services.

Road navigation planning: Plan arrival during daylight hours. A Rock Creek visitor explained, "The road in is a little narrow, but well maintained and easily navigable. Sites are heavily wooded, fairly well spaced, and most sites have a level area, but you have to back all the way in to get level on some."
