Located in northeastern Tennessee, Milligan College sits in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains at an elevation of approximately 1,500 feet. The area experiences mild spring and fall seasons, with summer temperatures typically ranging from 75-85°F during peak camping months. The nearby Watauga Lake and Nolichucky River create diverse camping opportunities with both waterfront and mountain forest options within a 30-minute drive.
What to do
Hiking trails access: Warriors' Path State Park offers multiple trails for all skill levels. "There are a lot of uneven campsites, so bring your leveling blocks. No real hiking but there was boat access to the lake. It's a good spot to just be outside, light a fire and toast a marshmallow," notes Michelle I. from Warriors' Path State Park Main Campground.
Waterfall exploration: Rock Creek Campground provides access to waterfall trails that take under an hour to reach. "A must see & do is the 1.5 mile hike to the falls, the strenuous level I would say only moderate since it's up hill going to & down hill coming back and the path is frequently used which keeps the path pretty clear," according to Steve P. at Cherokee National Forest Rock Creek Campgrounds.
Kayaking opportunities: Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park offers river access for paddlers of all levels. "This park is right on the banks of the Nolichuckey river. It had nice trails for hiking. There is river access for fishing or launching a water craft," explains Gregg G.
What campers like
Clean facilities: Julian Price Park maintains modern bathhouses. "Bathrooms are available here (upgrades coming soon!) as well as drinking water," shares Kirsten J. from Julian Price Park Campground.
Spacious sites: Many campers appreciate the site layout at Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park. "Nice camp spots on the river with a pool," states Sheree N. from Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park Campground.
Riverside camping: Riverpark Campground offers sites directly adjacent to the water. "We really enjoyed this campground. Its not a huge place which adds to the allure. The campground is located on an exciting section of the Nolichucky River about 10 minutes from Erwin, TN. During our stay we enjoyed watching kayakers, rafters, and swimmers take on the river," says Scott T.
What you should know
Seasonal considerations: Most glamping in Milligan College, Tennessee area operates year-round but with varying amenities. "We were there in December when the weather was chilly and practically had the place to ourselves. The bathhouse was exceptionally nice and there was also laundry and wifi available," notes Gregg G.
Reservation planning: For luxury tent camping near Milligan College, book well in advance during peak seasons. "Many of the sites in the A loop are reservable, and they have been reserved for several weeks (maybe months) in advance. They are the best sites as far as seeing the lake and sometimes because they are larger," advises Myron C.
Access limitations: Some roads to glamping sites have seasonal restrictions. "The campground was easy to locate, and the road leading to the campground was in great shape. I read some reviews online that the road was super bumpy, but didn't seem to notice that. We did have a truck, though so maybe that's why," mentions Isabella H. from Katy Branch.
Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Spacious Skies Bear Den provides organized programming for children. "Very friendly and helpful staff they know the surrounding hikes very well. Lots of activities during daylight hours with a playground for the kids. Quiets down at sunset," says Kenneth K. from Spacious Skies Bear Den.
Educational opportunities: Several campgrounds offer ranger programs. "In the warm seasons they have a ranger that comes around and even little events for kids. I remember picking apart an owl pellet with the ranger. Very outdoor educational," recalls Travis R.
Tips from RVers
Site selection considerations: Check site dimensions carefully before booking. "The site was perfect for our 23 ft RV but pay attention to the site size as some RVs had issues getting their larger RVs in their sites with the road/site layout," warns Jennifer H.
Hookup availability: Lakeview RV Resort provides full-service sites for luxury camping experiences. "Campground sites are a bit close together but it is well maintained and has friendly staff. Wifi works well. Nice dog park," notes Doreen M. from Lakeview RV Resort.
Leveling requirements: Bring leveling equipment for uneven sites. "Really nice facility near town. There are a lot of uneven campsites, so bring your leveling blocks. That said, great campground," advises Michelle I.
