Best Cabin Camping near Aurora, SD

Several state parks and recreation areas near Aurora, South Dakota offer cozy cabins with varying amenities. Oakwood Lakes State Park provides cabin rentals in both Campground 1 and Campground 2, featuring electric hookups, picnic tables, and fire rings. Lake Poinsett State Recreation Area, just 15 miles from Aurora, offers furnished cabins with electricity and heat for year-round use. Big Sioux Recreation Area cabins include basic furnishings with access to clean shower facilities and bathrooms. "The bathrooms are amazing for a campground. One of the few places I've ever camped where you get a full bathroom to yourself. Plus it was very clean," noted one visitor to Oakwood Lakes State Park. Most cabins include beds with mattresses but no linens, small refrigerators, and microwave ovens.

Pet-friendly cabins are available at most locations, though policies vary regarding additional fees and restrictions. Rustic log cabins at Palisades State Park provide a more traditional experience with fewer amenities but beautiful natural surroundings. KOA cabin camping options in Sioux Falls offer air conditioning, which proves valuable during summer months. "We were so grateful we chose to stay in a cabin (which had a/c); the highway noise was significantly muted," reported one KOA guest. Lake Herman State Park Campground features small cabins with lake views and access to paddle boards, kayaks, and canoes. Reservations are essential during peak summer months, with many locations accepting bookings up to 90 days in advance.

Most cabins require visitors to bring their own bedding, pillows, towels, and cooking utensils. Kitchen facilities vary significantly between locations, with some offering only outdoor fire pits with grill attachments while others provide indoor cooking options. Firewood can be purchased on-site at most parks for approximately $6 per bundle. Grocery stores are limited in the immediate Aurora area, so stocking up in larger towns like Brookings (20 miles east) or Arlington (10 miles south) is recommended before arrival. Basic supplies like ice, firewood, and limited groceries may be available at park offices or camp stores, particularly at the more developed locations like Sioux Falls KOA and Yogi Bear Jellystone Park, which maintain well-stocked camp stores with essential items.

    Palisades State Park Campground

    A very nice getaway!

We camped here over the weekend with our dogs. The campground is within 10 miles off of I90.

The park is not very big so there are not many campsites. Some have electric hook up, others are just for tent camping. All of them provide a picnic table and a fire pit. They also have little log cabins. We stayed at campsite 6 which was a very good spot. Some of the other sites seemed very close together without much privacy or shade.

The park staff (rangers, camp host and volunteers) was extremely friendly. They always made sure that we had everything we needed. The rangers also offer different programs on the weekend like learning about geocaching or how to make campfire desserts.

There is one bathhouse for the entire campground. It seemed a little old but got cleaned daily. There are also several vault toilets around the area. From the campground you have access to the water. There are also several short hiking trails from where you can see the rock formations.

It was just a very short ride to the Devils Gulch (Jesse James historical site) or Split Rock Park. There is also a Dollar General close by. We would definitely recommend the campground.

    Lake Herman State Park Campground

Beautiful RV and tent camping around a gorgeous lake

Large spots maintained very well. RV spots have electric. Many spots have shade, some are near the lake, and some with lake views. They have small cabins for rent, as well as paddle boards, kayaks, and canoes. There is a lower park that’s great for families, with activities on the weekends , a large playground, and easy lake access. The other park is mainly spaces, with a large grassy area in the center. They spray regularly for bugs, which is extremely important to me! The area has many geocaches as well!

Big Sioux Recreation Area — Big Sioux

Ok place to spend the night, but could have been better

I spent the night here and had to pay the entrance fee to the park as well as the camping fee for my tentsite. They had only a few tentsites available amid all the RV sites, but they were right on the edge of the playground, so the families had to walk right through my campsite to get to the play area. Not too big a deal as no one wanted to use the play area at night while I was sleeping, but still.  I also looked over at the power lines. There was a flush toilet facility close by but there was a very bright light on all night. Good for families needing to navigate in the dark but not wonderful if you like sleeping in darkness. And though I was told that quiet hours began at 10PM, the site next to me was quite loud through the trees until at least midnight so the quiet hours are not enforced. Meh. I don't think I'll be going back.

    Palisades State Park Campground

Nice stay in a state park

We passed through Palisades State Park earlier this year and spent some time in the day-use area so we knew it was a good place to camp as we passed through South Dakota on another trip. One main (clean) bathhouse with two showers plus two pit toilets for those camping farther away on the loop. A mix of cabins, tent, and electric sites. Lots of trees. LONG driveways and some sites (such as 34E) are very large. The website allows you to view sites, so you know in advance what to expect. Nice walking trails and picnic areas.

    Palisades State Park Campground

    Well Shaded Park

We happened upon this park during the 50th anniversary of the park so there were lots of park events happening. This is a very clean and well maintained park. We tent camp so much of my observations are geared for the tent camper. We stayed at site 34E, a long but narrow and slanted site. We were lucky to find some awkward somewhat flat place for our two tents. This site would be just fine for RV camping but I’d steer clear for tent camping. I’d estimate that 50% of the sites are flat and suitable for tents.
Here are some key take aways from our 3 night stay in late July 2022. -clean and well maintained park

    • fair wireless service for Verizon
    • well placed and clean shower / restroom houses
    • nice playgrounds
    • great options on the park for paddle boarding, kayaking, water play as well as additional options at near by Devil’s Gultch and Split Rock parks.
    • Very well shaded park
    • Grocery store less than 10 min away.
    • Mosquitos weren’t a problem during out stay with a little bug spray prevention.
    • Nice aluminum picnic tables at all sites. Standard fire pits with grilling attachments.
    • employees will enforce local approved fire wood use Negatives:
    • lots of biting flies
    • if you like private sites this isn’t for you The interesting:
    • this is easily the most heavily staffed state park I’ve ever stayed at. If you like a constant park employee presence you’ll like it. I found it to be excessive however. During a 30 min time period we counted 8 employee vehicles to two park visitors driving by. It seemed to create unnecessary road traffic and noise at times. Park employees walk the park on foot in the dark at the 11pm to enforce quite time. There aren’t going to be any site reservation mix ups there either. Park employees constantly check sites and make sure reservations are correct. The camp host was very nice and makes the round frequently.

    Beautiful and peaceful

Heading home needed a one night camp spot. This one fit the bill.
Located in Brandon not far from Sioux Falls. Clean bathrooms with showers. Firewood available to purchase. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. Bike and hiking trails. Plus plenty of privacy. Definitely will return.

Big Sioux Recreation Area — Big Sioux

    Convenient camping near Sioux Falls

This Recreation Area is large and  located off the Sioux River, which was slow flowing when I visited. It’s not the most picturesque river I’ve seen, so if you’re looking for that look further. However, because it was slow moving it made for a nice round trip paddle.

Easy access from 90W, not much road noise and close to the town of Brandon for supplies.

There’s a fantastic disc golf course complete with a creaky suspension foot bridge that spans the fiver.

Great hiking and biking trails too. I hiked the Valley of the Giants trail, which earns its name because of the many old, “giant” oaks in this river bottom area. It’s an easy hike with one slight incline/decline, but the loop was curtailed by a giant felled oak tree.  The path was completely covered and no matter which way I tried I couldn’t see the trail it had become so overgrown. Sadly it seems that this has been the fate of several the the Giants, perhaps due to the river flooding.

The campground has gravel pads. My site backed up to the river but there was a bushy berm and the bike/walking bath between the site and the river. No problem to access the river though because there are little paths worn through the bushes. Lots of trees for shade and good space between sites. There’s electric but no water at site. Fill up by the restrooms or before you come. Picnic table and fire ring with grill connected. Fire ring is on a cement pad. I’d never seen that before.

There are also  cabins for rent and when I was there the restrooms looked clean and functional.  Picnic shelter and gazebo are on site as well as the Bergeson’s Homestead. It’s always nice to see history being preserved like this! When I’m passing through this area again, I’ll revisit this recreation area.

    Sioux Falls KOA

    It could have been worse

We are new to the KOA chain and just learned they are on a tiered system. This location is a journey KOA, which means it is right off the highway and more of a place to stop than a nature experience. We were so grateful we choose to stay in a cabin (which had a/c) the tent sites are literally in parking spaces next to each other in the grass surrounding a child’s play area...rude. There are bright lights around the buildings that shine into your sites. The pool has a chain link fence around it. Because we were in a cabin with the air running, the highway noise was significantly muted. However if that’s not your situation, I’d seriously reconsider. The bathrooms were not up to the regular KOA standards I had come to expect. They just didn’t feel/look clean. The bed was not terrible and we were able to get a good night sleep. I don’t plan on staying at journey locations in the future unless absolutely necessary.

    Ingalls Homestead

Magical Must-See for Kids & All Little House on the Prairie Fans

This is a truly magical place, and if you’ve ever read any of the Little House on the Prairie books and are anywhere near De Smet South Dakota, do yourself a favor and swing by.

    The Campground

The Ingalls Homestead consists of two main parts. First is the "campground," which is a basically a large grassy slope where you can set up your tent for just $10. It includes hot showers, flush toilets, and a few picnic tables and fire-pits throughout the field. There's also fairly basic RV parking for $30 with electric and water hookups and a dump site as well as some basic but cool covered wagons for $60. We arrived just as the sun was setting, found a lovely spot for our tent, and then paid in the shop the next morning. The bathrooms were clean, the showers were a little strange but also clean and hot (basically a large room cordoned off by several shower curtains).

    The Homestead

De Smet is where the Ingalls family lived during the "Long Winter" of 1880-1881, and the Ingalls Homestead is a "family run business" that brings to life many activities from the 1880s such as visiting a one-room schoolhouse, making a corn on the cob doll, going on a covered wagon ride, etc. It's truly hands-on and some of our favorite time was spent hanging out in "Pa's" lean-to barn with the barn kitties and riding horses and ponies. My oldest son also learned how to drive the covered wagon to the schoolhouse down the road (another treat). Each station on the self-guided tour has an activity with incredibly nice and informed hosts. Most of the buildings are based on the original plans and descriptions from the Ingalls family, though no original buildings remain on the site. Visiting the homestead is an additional $15 per person over the age of five, and while you could camp without visiting the homestead, it was definitely worth a half or full-day visit.

Guide to Aurora

Camping cabins near Aurora, South Dakota provide convenient access to outdoor recreation while offering shelter from the region's variable weather patterns. Eastern South Dakota experiences temperature fluctuations throughout camping season, with summer highs averaging 85°F and nighttime lows sometimes dropping to 55°F even in July. The flat prairie landscape surrounding Aurora contains several lakes with established campgrounds within a 25-mile radius.

What to do

Water activities on Lake Poinsett: Lake Poinsett State Recreation Area, located 15 miles from Aurora, features a clean designated swimming area. "The swim area was nice, no sand, but a nice place to swim where the water was clean!" noted a visitor who found the lake refreshing during summer heat.

Hiking quartzite formations: Palisades State Park Campground offers unique geological features not commonly found in this region. "I love this park for both its camping and hiking. Stunning quartzite formations make for some great climbing. It's a really small park which is both good and bad. The trails aren't very long, but it's not usually overcrowded," writes one regular visitor.

Horseback riding: Oakwood Lakes State Park maintains dedicated horse trails and a separate horse campground with cabin options. "Great place for horseback riding and canoeing, plus boating and fishing. In addition to natural beauty there are games to rent, playground, etc.," mentions a park visitor who appreciated the diverse recreation options.

What campers like

Private bathroom facilities: Campers consistently rate the bathroom facilities highly at several parks. At Campground 2 in Oakwood Lakes State Park, visitors appreciate the modern facilities. "Clean bathrooms with hot showers. Nice path around lake for walking the dog. Lots of families having a good time!" notes a recent guest.

Spacious, shaded sites: Big Sioux Recreation Area provides camping spots with ample tree coverage. "Our site was nice, level, spacious, and had plenty of grass coverage (instead of dirt). Bugs were a pain but not much you can do about that. Bike trails are awesome," reports a repeat visitor who enjoys the established campsites.

Seasonal operation: Most camping cabins near Aurora have limited seasonal availability. Sioux Falls KOA operates from May 1 to October 15, while state parks typically remain open year-round with reduced winter services.

Highway noise concerns: Some campgrounds situated near major highways experience traffic noise. "We were at campground 1. Despite being close to Brookings this park is quiet and I didn't find it very full," notes a visitor to Oakwood Lakes who appreciated the peaceful setting despite proximity to town.

Reservation requirements: During peak summer months, cabin reservations fill quickly. "We spent a week here in July, 2020. The staff was friendly and quite helpful. The people visiting were nice and easy to talk to. I had a great relaxing week," reports a visitor to Sioux Falls Yogi Bear, suggesting advance planning for summer stays.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly amenities: Family-oriented campgrounds offer structured activities and play areas. "We visited during the week so we pretty much had the campsite to ourselves!! They have a playground which my 4 year old son loved! He can't wait to go again!" shares a parent who stayed at Oakwood Lakes State Park.

Swimming options: Several parks provide designated swimming areas safe for children. "Our family spent a long weekend here enjoying all of the activities they had to offer. Everything from laser tag to chocolate milk chugging contests. The sites were extremely well maintained," notes a family who visited Sioux Falls Yogi Bear.

Educational opportunities: Pipestone RV Campground provides access to cultural and historical sites. "This campground is a great example of what camping really is. The owners are attentive, the facility is clean, neighbors are friendly, and it's located close to restaurants, shopping, and anything else you could need or want!" mentions a visitor who appreciated the convenient location.

Tips from RVers

Pull-through accessibility: Lake Poinsett State Recreation Area offers well-designed sites for larger vehicles. "We stayed at campground 1 number 36 it was the perfect pull through spot to set up for the weekend! The bathrooms were very clean which made the stay 10 times better," shares an RV camper.

Utility connections: Big Sioux Recreation Area provides electric hookups at most sites, with some offering full hookups. "Just outside of Sioux Falls. Stayed here for a night on the way to the black hills. It was a nice campground right on the Sioux River. The restrooms were well maintained," notes a traveler using the park as an overnight stop.

Campground layout: State park campgrounds typically offer more space between sites than private facilities. "Large spots maintained very well. RV spots have electric. Many spots have shade, some are near the lake, and some with lake views," explains a visitor to Lake Herman State Park who appreciated the site variety.
