What to do
Hiking on the Pachaug River trails: Near Hopeville Pond State Park Campground, multiple trails follow the riverside. "We paddled south to the end of the pond and up the Pachaug River, eventually reaching the dam at Pachaug Pond. It's an 8 mile paddle with some tricky spots to navigate, but very pretty! This park also has plenty of trails for hiking and geocaching."
Fishing at Nature's Campsites: The pond offers decent fishing within walking distance of cabin accommodations. "Fishing was decent," notes one camper, with bass and panfish being common catches. The pond is accessible to all campers, and no license is required for those under 16.
Recreation activities at larger resorts: Strawberry Park provides numerous structured activities throughout the day. "Bingo every night, and more activities than you could possibly do!!! The kids ride their bikes to the sports fields, the rec center for the pool and activities. Oh and my young children LOVE the air pillow, they have spent hours on there."
What campers like
Proximity to beaches: Cabin locations provide easy access to Rhode Island's coastline. "It is just off the highway... There are sites that have the amenities that people may want... canoe access, a beach, and certain sites do have water/power hookups. The beach is within walking distance of almost all sites."
Camp stores for supplies: Whispering Pines Campground offers a well-stocked store. "Glad we found this place on here. wasn't sure what to expect, but this campground has been around a really long time... a cute little store with fun things for the kids, and good humor bars- which we loved since the snack bar was only open on weekends."
Seasonal cabin availability: Non-summer cabin access is available at select locations. "We are a moderate sized state park campground located along a river and offering fishing, boating, and swimming opportunities. Some of the site have 50A/20A electric hookups and there's a dump station available. It opens for the season earlier than many of the others, in early April."
What you should know
Site spacing varies significantly: At most locations, cabins are placed close together. "The sites seemed a little close too. I'm rating 4 stars for the potential of the grounds if we were there at the right time otherwise I would rate 2.5 to 3 stars based on our trip alone."
Off-season limitations: Many cabin amenities are unavailable outside summer. "I believe we camped there too early in the season to fully enjoy the grounds. The pool, splash pad, and nearly everything else was non operational or locked up still. Bocce ball set was pad locked, no one working the rec hall for horse shoes, shuffle board was in op."
Bathroom facilities differ by location: East Beach State Campground has minimal facilities for cabin campers. "Camping here REQUIRES a self contained vehicle, please respect the nature of this beach and pack out everything you pack in." Bathrooms are typically available but may be basic vault toilets in some areas.
Tips for camping with families
Pool access considerations: Not all cabin locations provide swimming facilities. "The pool, splash pad, and nearly everything else was non operational or locked up still," notes one camper about spring visits, while summer visitors report "Nice campground, a mix of seasonal & short-term visitors. My kids enjoyed playing tennis & swimming in the pool at the campground."
Kid-friendly activities: Mystic KOA provides structured entertainment. "This KOA provides a lot to do for kids and families. The pool is small and usually crowded, but still very well kept. And then there's mini golf, hay rides, and lots of fun planned activities."
Cabin size limitations: Most cabins accommodate 4-6 people maximum. "We stayed in a full hook up-50amp pull through site. On arrival, the campground was clean and spacious. Office staff very helpful with check in, and we were easily able to find our site." Larger families should book adjacent cabins or consider multiple accommodations.
Tips from RVers
Cabin alternatives for RVers: Several campgrounds offer both RV sites and cabin rentals. "This is a great family campground. Lots to do and it is massive! You can bike for ever and go to the lake! Camp store literally has anything you would need. Usually pretty busy, you will have neighbors, who can get loud."
Site layout challenges: Ashaway RV Resort has tightly packed sites. "The sites are VERY close, but the people are nice and we had a great stay. It is a quick drive to the beach, we loved Westerly & Misquamicut Beaches. Lots to do in the area and stores if needed."
Off-season RV access: Some cabins remain accessible when RV sites close. "Nice and quiet. Bathrooms are new and very clean," notes a camper who visited during shoulder season when crowds were reduced but facilities remained open.
