The Blue Canoe RV Resort in Connellsville accommodates big rigs with pull-through sites, though it operates seasonally from May through mid-October. Kooser State Park Campground

    Great little campground

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay here. We camped at site #15 and it was perfect. It fit our 34ft toy hauler without any issues. The park is beautiful and very well maintained. -Sites are spaced out. -Dog friendly. -$5 firewood bundles at the entrance. -Cleanest bathrooms/showers -Crystal clear stream with beautiful trail to the lake. Both stocked with fish. -Lots of picnic tables at the lake. -No formal check in. -Nice playground. -Easy access to dump site. -Kinda close to a main road so you do hear some traffic but nothing too bad. We will definitely be back! We love this area!

    Roaring Run Resort

Decent Campground, no 50 amp service

This campground is a nice, quiet campground about 30 minutes from Pittsburgh. It is a membership-based campground, we stayed there using coast to coast. The campground is decent, but not sure it really qualifies as a “resort”. It is an older park that could use some updates, namely electric service, fresh gravel for the sites, and sewer, but overall the park was clean and reasonably well kept.

The park is gated, you have to stop at the security booth to check in, enter, or leave the park, so you might have to wait a few minutes, but that is a nice level of added security. It is pretty easy to navigate the park even with a larger rig, and there is an nice sized overflow parking area to unhook your toad when you first get there. I would recommend getting there before dark. They did have signs directing you to the different site number groups which was helpful.

The road my GPS brought me in was a little tight, but manageable. There was a better route but it did have a very short bridge with a 10 ton weight limit, so be sure to really check your route. Another bonus is that it is only a few minutes from the PA turnpike.

The sites are average, but there are no sewer hookups and no 50 amp service, the whole park is 30 amp. The sites are reasonable level, but the one we had was a little tricky to get into because of it being on a hill, but it was manageable. The picnic table benches were completely rotted out.

There are two dump stations, one located on the way out, and the other located in one of the upper loops.

The campground did have nice amenities, the pool was large and clean, it had a nice playground, a camp store, sports courts, horseshoes, volleyball, and a mini golf course. The staff were all very nice, and they patrolled the park throughout the day and night for security, which is always nice.

The closest town is about 20 minutes away, and there are a bunch of restaurants, a Lowes, and auto parts stores should you need supplies or make a repair.

The campground is about 40 minutes from the Flight 93 National Memorial, about 20 minutes from Fallingwater, and there were a couple of wineries in the area as well.

All in all, our visit was good. I gave three stars because of the lack of 50 amp hookups and the size and quality of the sites.

    Seven Points (PA)

    Top 5 Campground in PA

This campground is located on the east side of Pennsylvania and offers a beautiful view of Lake Raystown. The campground has over 200 sites to choose from, and many of them are right on the water. There are also plenty of activities to keep you busy, including swimming, fishing, kayaking, and canoeing and my favorite thing to do Mt Biking. Raystown lake is also a really nice boating lake. The lake is a natural beauty with so many coves and inlets for the biggest of boats to enjoy. They do have a camping resort on the other side of the lake which makes it nice for anyone looking for rustic cabins or cabin rentals.

There are 50 miles of single track mountain biking at this campground. They are some of the best flow trails on the East coast and are the# 1 trail system in Pennsylvania. This is a family friendly campground and has so much to offer. There are volleyball nets, playgrounds, kayak and paddleboard rentals. The kids took a kayak over to an island and spent the afternoon cliff jumping with a 10 ft and 25 ft cliff to launch off of. The sites here are some of the nicest we have ever seen. They are all big and private with stunning views of Raystown Lake. There are steps down from your camper to a pad with a fire pit and area for a tent. You are literally 10 feet away from the water as you enjoy a sunset while sitting around the fire. The lake is a great place to kayak, paddleboard, or just relax and enjoy the view. We love coming here and spending our weekends on the lake. All tent sites are equipped with picnic tables and most sites are electric. looking for other epic reviews check out the top ten campgrounds in PA https://www.longdaycampingco.com/post/10-best-campsites-in-pennsylvania-gorgeous-sites-to-enjoy-the-outdoors

    Laurel Hill State Park Campground

Very large and wooded state park

General: Large campground in four loops with a variety of sites ranging from tent-only, 30-amp electric, 50-amp electric, and 30/50-amp electric, along with eight camper cabins.

Site Quality: All sites are gravel; most appeared level, but some did not. All sites are wooded but some have more separation than others. Our site backed up to the creek but surprisingly, there was not a lot of water flowing in the spring,

Bath/Shower house: Basic and dated, but reasonably clean. Did not use the shower.

Activities/Amenities: Many include fishing, swimming, boating, bicycling, hiking, geocaching, and hunting. The lake is separate from the campground, but it is less than a mile away and a reasonable distance walk. There is also a playground, volleyball, shuffleboard, and a large picnic area at the end of one of the loops. Bike and boat rentals are available in the summer season; the season was set to open the day after we left so aside from hiking, we could not avail ourselves of any of the activities (and my husband had a foot injury so even hiking was out for us). There are also laundry facilities, but I did not check these out.

We were surprised that just a few days before Memorial Day, only a handful of sites were occupied. We’ve been very impressed by the pristine conditions of many Pennsylvania state parks, but this one had a more rustic feel and had not been modernized. Fleeting cell at best on Verizon.

    Quemahoning Family Recreation Area

    Enjoyable family campground

Quemahoning Family Recreation Area offers great fishing, some nice trails and generally wonderful weather during the summer season.  The campground offers some sites with electrical and others with varying primitive services.  The campground has a bathroom with showers (2 for men, 2 for women).  The result is there are sometimes lines waiting for a shower to be available.  There is a camp store where wood, ice and fishing supplies are available.  There is no trash service;  campers are expected to carry out their trash.  Campsites do have fire rings, a picnic table and parking available.  The campgrounds are pet friendly.  Boats are available to rent.  If you bring your own power needs to be electric only.

    Milton Loop Campground

    Super Friendly

There are a number of regular campers that stay here, we found them all very friendly. There are some lots with power and water, some with just water and some without either. Shady spots are somewhat difficult to find, we used a pop up to create our own. Pet friendly and close to a boat ramp, making fishing and kayaking easy.

    Blue Knob State Park Campground

    Beautiful mountain campground

small quiet campground with room for tents and travel trailers at most sites. Two walk in sites that are less than 100 yards off the access road. These two site however are along the main road into the campground so you get a lot of vehicle traffic noise.

Bike trails come directly through the park making it simple to go for a ride but the trails are not for the weak. Lots of climbing or descending and fairly rocky. The trails also lead to the peak (second highest in PA) and join up with trails on the resorts property.

showers and bathrooms and a pool at the bottom of the mountain (5 min drive)

ski resort at the peak with a bar and golf course.

Guide to Vintondale

Vintondale lies within Pennsylvania's Appalachian Mountain region at approximately 1,400 feet elevation. This area experiences cool mountain nights even in summer, with temperatures often dropping 15-20 degrees from daytime highs. Camping near Vintondale offers access to both mountain forests and valley waterways, with sites typically located 800-1,500 feet above sea level.

What to do

Creek exploration and fishing: Multiple campgrounds near Vintondale feature creek access for wading and fishing. At Mirror Lake RV Camping & Fishing, campers enjoy floating down the creek. "Site 26 is our favorite. It has a huge back yard and easy access to the creek. Close by is Ligonier, Idlewild, and St. Vincent (where the Pittsburgh Steelers training camp takes place)," notes Mathew H.

Miniature golf courses: Many area campgrounds maintain on-site mini golf courses for family entertainment. Friendship Village Campground & RV Park features a well-maintained course near their office. According to Shelby B., "They've done a lot of improvements over the years which have paid off. Nice camp stores, two swimming pools, mini golf, and a catch-and-release fishing lake."

Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) trail access: The GAP trail runs through several area campgrounds, providing direct cycling access. The Blue Canoe RV Resort (formerly Uniontown KOA) sits alongside this popular bike route. "The GAP trail rolls right through the middle of this traditional KOA campground... For through riders on the trail there is a special place to camp, close to the west-bound entrance," explains Shari G.

What campers like

Spacious, creek-side sites: Campers appreciate sites with creek access and room to spread out. At Mirror Lake RV Camping & Fishing, one reviewer mentions, "We were lucky enough to get a full-hookup site right on the lake. Quiet, peaceful, everything you want on a spring trip." The campground also features sites along a small creek where children can play.

Clean pool facilities: Several campgrounds maintain pools with strict cleanliness standards. At Timber Run Campground (formerly Raystown Lake/Saxton KOA), Doug J. notes, "It still has a pool that is as clean as they come (they may have added a new liner, not sure) and they still maintain it like it is being inspected the next day."

Kid-friendly recreation areas: Parents value campgrounds with multiple play options. Friendship Village Campground includes several recreation features as noted by steve K.: "There is 3 play grounds all different and all well kept" and "the pond is nice and has a 1/2 mile walking path around it with trees and beaches to stop and sit."

What you should know

Mountain road challenges: Many campgrounds sit on hills requiring careful navigation. At Pioneer Lakes RV Park, Rachel D. mentions, "The roads around the camp ground could use some maintenance, especially on the hill side by the pool!" Sites on hills may require extra leveling equipment.

Seasonal operation schedules: Several campgrounds near Vintondale operate seasonally. The Blue Canoe RV Resort in Connellsville runs from May through mid-October only. Winter camping options are limited, with Friendship Village Campground among the few parks open year-round.

Site leveling requirements: Uneven terrain is common throughout the region. At Nature's Getaway RV Park, Paul B. reports, "The site wasn't so level, but we made it work." Pack extra leveling blocks when RV camping near Vintondale, Pennsylvania.

Tips for camping with families

Weekend activities: Family-oriented campgrounds often schedule special weekend events. Pioneer Lakes runs regular programming for children, with Catelyn T. noting it's "Extremely family friendly, lots to do for kiddos on weekend, stocked ponds, bathhouses very close to all sites."

Multiple playgrounds: Look for campgrounds with various play areas distributed throughout the property. At Friendship Village Campground, families appreciate the range of options, including "a jumping pillow and a very well-built gaga ball pit," according to Christopher R.

Floating and water play: Creek access provides natural water play areas. Mirror Lake RV Camping offers creek floating opportunities, with Austin B. reporting, "We had 8 kids and 8 adults who all had a blast playing on the playground, floating down the creek, swimming in the pool, riding bicycles etc."

Tips from RVers

Site selection for big rigs: Large motorhomes require specific sites at most campgrounds. At Lumber City RV Park, staff helps guide campers to appropriate sites. "Staff was very friendly and helpful throughout the weekend. Staff drives around periodically on a ranger and can be flagged down if help is needed," reports Tim W.

Water and electric hookups: Most parks provide water and electric connections, but sewer hookups may be limited. Friendship Village Campground offers full hookup sites with 50-amp service. "Sites are very spacious and the gravel pad was level upon parking. Good connections and solid cable," according to Brittany V.

Cell service variability: Coverage varies throughout the mountainous terrain. Verizon generally provides the most reliable service, though many campgrounds offer Wi-Fi as an alternative. Friendship Village reports "Overall Wi-Fi worked well and everything you need is here."
