Best RV Parks & Resorts near New Wilmington, PA

Several RV parks surround New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, offering varied options for motorhome travelers. RV Village Camping Resort in Mercer provides full hookup sites with 50 amp service on level gravel pads from April 1 through October 31. Just 15 miles away, Chestnut Ridge Park and Campground features 115 sites with both 30 and 50 amp electric options, operating May through October. Rocky Springs Campground, also in Mercer, maintains big-rig friendly sites with full hookups and operates mid-April to late October. Bear Run Campground in Portersville offers 300 sites with full hookup capabilities, including both 30 and 50 amp service. "The sites are pretty level, plenty for our 38 ft fifth wheel and had plenty of room," noted one RV camper about their experience at a local park.

Seasonal availability affects most RV parks in the region, with few offering year-round access. Rustic Acres in Shippenville stands out by remaining open all year with full hookup sites. Dump stations are available at most parks, though Rocky Springs Campground lacks this amenity. Cell service varies throughout the area - Verizon typically provides reliable coverage with LTE service at most locations. Pet-friendly policies are standard across RV campgrounds near New Wilmington, though leash requirements apply universally. Many parks sell firewood on-site, eliminating the need to transport it. For RVers requiring propane, several parks offer refill stations. The terrain in some parks can present challenges - one traveler mentioned needing blocks to level their camper due to sloping sites, particularly in the more wooded campgrounds.

    Tomlinson Run State Park Campground

    Nice little State Park

Tomlinson Run is a small state park situated in the northern panhandle of West Virginia nestled between eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. Plenty of things to do there including but not limited to…. Mini golf, hiking trails, biking, swimming, fishing, paddle boats, parks for the kids, and of course the camping. The campsites here are mainly gravel pads with the exception being the asphalt handicapped spots (2). Most spots are 30 amp with a few 50 amp (new for 2021). The park also has a few primitive spots available and some yurts and cabins to rent. I have a 38’ fifth wheel and the spots are tight for it (even the couple pull thru). Campground facilities are clean but dated. They state new facilities are coming soon. The campground is at the top of a hill and the spots are wooded and shaded. I would consider the camping to be spaced generously (room to stretch out). They have a small camp store and information available. A breakfast is available during peak season for a small fee. They do have water and a dump station available (free for campers to use).

    Thousand Trails Kenisee Lake

Great spacious park with 2 lakes!

Kenisee Lake RV Resort Thousand Trails in Jefferson, Ohio is a another great Thousand Trails park! This park is very large and has a park-like setting with 2 lakes. There is fishing on the lakes and the campground has rowboats available to use. They have all the amenities a family could want such as swimming pool, playground, mini-golf, and more! The staff is friendly and very accommodating. Kenisee Lake has 30 and 50 amp FHU back-in and pull-through sites. The only downside is the internet which is lacking in this area. We have really enjoyed our stay here and will be returning! 👍🏻😬

    Bear Run Campground

    Loads to do...!

This campground is deceptively big! The nightly RV sites are close to the park entrance and are relatively flat. The campground hosts themed events, game nights and arts& crafts. There is a swimming pool and playground for the kids. It also has a small café that sells baked goods and coffee. On Saturdays they sell amazing Armish Donuts!

Further into the campground the sites turn to more permanent sites. Further up the hill are more cottages and camping. This campground is steep in parts and too large to walk efficiently. There is a fenced dog run area and a beautiful lake. All sites have fire rings. There is an onsite laundry, WIFI, onsite dump station and propane refill station.

You can also buy ice and firewood. The campground is gated. Lots to do at the campground and lots to do in the surrounding area. They welcome all furry friends!

    Raccoon Creek State Park Campground

    Raccoon Creek Camping

This is a large state park offering electric only sites

The sites are set amounts the forest and there are several loops to choose from. Loop F is pet friendly. All sites are within walking distance to amenities

Amenities are quite run down but functional

Wildlife is beautiful and its a short ~10min drive to the beach area of Raccoon Creek lake.

Two (2) dump station spots and fresh water taps location throughout the park

NOTE: Many sites are not level, you will require blocks/timber to level out campers. Tent campers should choose their site using the photos on the state park site.

All sites have a paved car space.

    Mercer-Grove City KOA

    Really nice!

Very well maintained campground with lots of amenities, esp for kids (pool, playground). Generous sized sites, not too close together. Looks like quite a few long-term RVers here. Cute chickens wandering around. Hiking trail accessible from the campsite. Heavily wooded and quiet, but not too far off interstate.

    Tomlinson Run State Park Campground

    Very wooded campground

General: 50-site (all but six with electric hookups) campground plus two yurts and three cabins. Two sites are handicap accessible.

Site Quality: The sites have gravel pads (except the handicap-accessible ones which were paved). The sites were completely covered with leaves when we were there which made it challenging to determine where the actual (narrow) pad was. Sites appeared to be level. A fire ring and wooden picnic table complete the site.

Bathhouse: A little dated but clean. Two of the stall doors did not latch properly. Didn't use the shower so cannot comment but there was a sign indicating it took a while for the water to warm up.

Activities/Amenities: There is a small camper store, laundry, and a playground. In season, there is lake swimming and a boat dock. There is a fishing area, mini-golf and disc golf, and several short hiking trails. Unfortunately, since we arrived late afternoon and had to depart early the following day (and were camping off-season), we could not take advantage of any of these things. What we lose in activities, we gain in a quieter camping experience with fewer crowds, which is generally preferable for us!

    West Branch State Park Campground

    Love the Lake!

This state park has a lot to offer with the highlight being a large 2,650-lake that appeals to fishermen, boaters, and swimmers. The park is over 5,000 acres and not only has camping but hiking, volleyball, fishing, playgrounds, picnicking, hunting, horseback riding, and more.

The campground is divided into three loops with nearly 200 sites. Campsites include those with full hook-up (50 amp), electric only (50 amp), and some with no electric. This campground is suitable for everything from large RVs to tents. Sites and roads are paved and each site has a picnic table and fire pit. In loops where there is no water directly at the site, water spigots are scattered throughout. The restroom/bathhouses in our loop were really nice, modern, clean, and had laundry facilities which is a real plus at a state park campground. Campsites can be reserved online up to six months in advance. Since we were here in April, the campground was practically empty and getting a site was no problem. But, if you want one of the 29 full hook-up sites in the summer, you better book early.

We really enjoyed the hiking trails and being able to leave our campsite and be right on the trails. There are approximately 12 miles of hiking trails and an additional 20 miles that are open to horses and snowmobiles. (Be aware that hunting is permitted in certain areas.)

The park is about 15 miles from Cuyahoga Valley National Park which is a fantastic place to explore with a lot going on for the whole family! If you are interested in football, the National Football Hall of Fame is just down the road in Canton. The town of Hudson has a pretty, historic downtown with a fun old soda fountain.

We would definitely stay at this campground again. It was a perfect place to stay while visiting family in the nearby town of Hudson. Loved having a paved site with full hook-ups especially since there was a lot of rain while we were there. The lake was perfect for kayaking and had we been able to stay longer we would have spent more time on the water.

    Shenango Campground

    Huge COE

After getting off I80, our RV GPS wanted to take us on a wonky route, so we followed Waze and the campground’s(CG) web instructions that took us across the causeway on N. Hermitage Rd, then a right turn off on Birchwood Rd, which led us to take a left turn back across N. Hermitage Rd to get back to the Shenango Rec Area turn. Once we got to the CG, check in was quick and very easy. Just happened, our next door neighbor/camp host checked us in and told us we could get water off their site so we proceeded straight to site 199 that’s a back in with electric(50/30 AMP) only plus one of the better spaced sites in the CG. We had to maneuver a couple of times to get into the 90 degree site but the road was wide with no obstacles to prevent swinging into the site. We quickly found out that our 50 AMP connection had issues and after reporting it, a maintenance crew came within 20 minutes and fixed a bad breaker. We got 3 bars on Verizon and a handful of OTA channels. Due to the amount of mature trees, satellite would be iffy depending on your site. There are no FHU sites(camp host sites have electric& water). Electric sites are centrally grouped within the loops and spaced closer together than most COEs. The majority of the sites within this CG are dry camping and they too are fairly close together. The sites right on the lake were all dry camping. With all the dry camping sites in this CG, its nice that they allow generator use during non quiet hours. Quiet hours here are 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM. There are water spigots periodically located within the loops and the CG map identifies where they are. There’s also a two-lane dump station located near the entrance but there is no potable water. There are signs stating no alcohol in the park, but people were openly drinking. We also noted that the contractors who clean the restroom/shower facilities start early in the morning and close the facility while cleaning, which was inconvenient for the dry campers just waking up. If we were to stay at this CG again, we’d come during the week and get a dry camping site on the water.

Guide to New Wilmington

Campsites near New Wilmington, Pennsylvania spread across mixed hardwood forests with elevations between 1,000-1,300 feet. The region experiences four distinct seasons with summer temperatures typically ranging 70-85°F and winter lows frequently below freezing. Several campgrounds operate seasonally from April through October due to the harsh winter conditions, though a few remain open year-round for cold-weather camping enthusiasts.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Shenango River Lake provides excellent fishing access with multiple waterfront campsites at Shenango Campground. "Great place to camp, fish, boat, and do much more. I love the fact that you can tie your boat or wave runner right at most of the sites," notes one visitor.

Horseback riding: Bear Run Campground offers weekend horseback riding experiences for campers. "My son loves the horse rides on Sundays," shares one regular visitor, making it a unique activity not found at most area campgrounds.

Swimming options: Several campgrounds maintain swimming pools for guests when Lake Arthur temperatures aren't ideal. At Bear Run Campground, "The pool is smaller but still enjoyable. Tons of activities always planned on the weekend. Family Friendly Friendly!"

Local Amish country exploration: Rocky Springs Campground sits in the middle of Amish country with convenient access to local businesses. "Closest businesses are an Amish-run nursery and a fruit/vegetable stand. Shopping is about 15 minutes away and Shenango Reservoir is about 20 minutes away," according to one camper.

What campers like

Friendly atmosphere: Many campgrounds foster community connections among visitors. At Rustic Acres, one camper noted, "I can't remember when we were at a campground where everyone said hi and waved to each other. loved it and will return!"

Weekend activities: Scheduled events make weekends special at several campgrounds. "This campground is very nice. Sites are large and the area is peaceful. The area is well kept and owners are very nice," says one visitor to Chestnut Ridge Park and Campground.

Large sites: Several rv parks near New Wilmington offer spacious campsites. At Chestnut Ridge Park and Campground, visitors appreciate that "it does not feel crowded, sites were grassy and all utilities worked well."

Natural settings: Many campgrounds maintain wooded areas for a more rustic experience. One camper describes Rocky Springs as "Quiet, peaceful, relaxing, wooded and scenic," noting that "this is the place to unwind and relax."

What you should know

Seasonal limitations: Most camping options close during winter months. One exception is Rustic Acres, which remains "open all year" according to their listing.

Cell service variations: Mobile connectivity can be inconsistent at some campgrounds. Remote work campers should note that Kenisee Lake RV Campground requires "an external antenna to cellular internet" for reliable connection.

Flood risks: Some campgrounds sit in flood-prone areas. At Fombell Landing, a camper reported, "The campground is entirely in a flood zone. It gets so deep the locals cars have floated away."

Reservation timing: During peak summer months, especially holiday weekends, early reservations are essential. One camper at Shenango noted, "This place worked out great for us on our drive across the country. We could still get a reservation same day even though it was 4th of July weekend."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Multiple campgrounds offer play areas for children. At Valley View Campground, families can enjoy "a relaxing 4 days at a tent site. Would absolutely recommend this campground!"

Children's programming: Structured activities keep kids entertained at several locations. Rustic Acres offers "a children's program on Saturday mornings. Our children had a ball making crafts, playing games, finding items on a scavenger hunt and of course snacks!"

Lake swimming alternatives: When weather doesn't permit lake swimming, campgrounds with pools provide alternatives. Bear Run Campground has "a swimming pool and playground for the kids" according to visitor reports.

Site selection for families: Some campgrounds have better family-oriented areas. At Shenango Campground, experienced campers recommend specific sections: "Our favorite sites in the Golden loop are #6, 7, 9, 12 and 17. The main loop sites # 72, 66 and 80."

Tips from RVers

Leveling challenges: Some campgrounds require additional equipment for RV leveling. At Rocky Springs Campground, visitors appreciate that "sites are gravel and level" making setup easier than at other locations.

Generator policies: RV parks near New Wilmington have varying generator rules. Shenango Campground allows generator use during non-quiet hours but restricts them after 10 PM, which affects dry campers without electrical hookups.

Late arrival procedures: Many campgrounds accommodate after-hours check-ins. One visitor to Kenisee Lake RV Campground reported, "I called because I was going to arrive late past closing hours. They checked me in over the phone and left all of my site information on the outside of the building."

Big rig accessibility: While many campgrounds claim to be big-rig friendly, access roads vary in quality. At Shenango Campground, campers note "nice paved roads throughout" but "the road going into the duck loops aren't as nice as the rest of the campground roads."
