Access roads to some campgrounds involve steep terrain—Mountain Top Campground sits atop a ridge requiring an uphill climb with potentially challenging turns for larger rigs. Cell service varies significantly across the area with Verizon typically providing the most reliable coverage, though often limited to 2-3 bars of LTE. Most parks provide sanitary dump stations, with some offering full sewer hookups at premium sites. Pet policies are generally accommodating with designated dog walking areas at larger facilities. Seasonal closures affect availability, with approximately half the regional campgrounds shutting down between late October and early April, though Mountain Top and Rustic Acres maintain year-round operations.

    Bear Run Campground

    Loads to do...!

This campground is deceptively big! The nightly RV sites are close to the park entrance and are relatively flat. The campground hosts themed events, game nights and arts& crafts. There is a swimming pool and playground for the kids. It also has a small café that sells baked goods and coffee. On Saturdays they sell amazing Armish Donuts!

Further into the campground the sites turn to more permanent sites. Further up the hill are more cottages and camping. This campground is steep in parts and too large to walk efficiently. There is a fenced dog run area and a beautiful lake. All sites have fire rings. There is an onsite laundry, WIFI, onsite dump station and propane refill station.

You can also buy ice and firewood. The campground is gated. Lots to do at the campground and lots to do in the surrounding area. They welcome all furry friends!

    Mercer-Grove City KOA

    Really nice!

Very well maintained campground with lots of amenities, esp for kids (pool, playground). Generous sized sites, not too close together. Looks like quite a few long-term RVers here. Cute chickens wandering around. Hiking trail accessible from the campsite. Heavily wooded and quiet, but not too far off interstate.

    Tionesta Rec. Area Campground

    Nice COE

There was not a real address to set our RV GPS. Waze and Google maps will pull up directions by entering Tionesta Recreation Area. We came in from the west on US-6 to PA-66, and up PA-36. From I-80, take the exit for PA-36 then follow the signs to Tionesta and once you get near you'll see the Tionesta Recreation Area Signs. There are signs to the boat launch area so pay attention and follow the camping signs; the campground(CG) is on the right. If you come in from Tionesta, once you clear the town the CG area is to the left. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon around 3:00 PM and the COE entrance building was not manned, so we took a picture of the CG map and proceeded to back-in site 100 with 50 AMP FHUs. There were no obstacles so our back-in was one and done. The site was just long enough for our 39’ fifth wheel(recreation.gov stated max length 48 ft RV) and we had to park our F450 diagonally in front. We noticed that the site post already had our names and dates of stay. The utilities were about 3/4 the way to the back of the site so no problems with sewer, water, or electric cord lengths. The water pressure was okay at about 42 psi. We did not receive any OTA channels but this site and several others back up to a huge berm so you can get satellite. Most of the sites in the CG have mature trees so the satellite is iffy. We got 2 bars on Verizon. The site lengths vary in the CG and the lengths from the reservation site seemed to be fairly correct. There were quite a few larger rigs here. Most if not all of the sites in this CG are full hookups. We noticed that some were 30/20 AMP. Sites closer to the front of the CG, especially along the river, tend to be close to each other. We found that the 90s- 100s area has the best site spacing with site 100 being one of the most spacious sites. After watching a 40’ 5th wheel struggle to back into site 113, we decided this site is not a good choice for rigs over 35 feet or for someone with below-average backing abilities due to the obstacles getting into the site. The pad angles at 90 degrees, there’s a ditch across the road from the site making it difficult to swing the tow vehicle, and there are trees to avoid. We enjoyed walking our dogs through the CG and watching the groundhogs in the rocks behind our site. We noted during our 4-day stay towards the end of June that restaurants and other sights such as museums may be closed Monday, Tuesday, and/or Wednesday. Get out and explore PA Route 666, which includes the Nebraska bridge, Tall Oaks Gift Shop, and Frog rock.

Cook Forest State Park Campground & Cabins

    Open Campground

We don’t live far from this campground, so it was a quick weekend trip in early April. Early April in western Pennsylvania means overnight temperatures in the 40’s and highs in the 50/60’s. The campground sits at the top of a ridge, with an uphill climb if coming from the south. We stayed in site #50, which was in the middle of the loop. Once there, backing in the site was easy, although the narrow road on the loop can be a little challenging, especially if you have a big rig. Once parked, leveling was easy and we were set up in no time. Our site was a little short, so the back door to our camper was near the fire ring, which resulted in smoke blowing through our camper, but nothing a can of Fabreze didn’t fix when we got home. The campground has a nice playground, volleyball court and open grass area for tossing a football or playing soccer. There are a couple of fresh water stations around the loop, so plan accordingly before arriving or be prepared to block traffic on the narrow road while you fill up with fresh water. The dump station was very open and convenient, so departure was quick. We will definitely visit this campground again, but will probably pick something with more shade, especially if visiting in the summer. We have a Winegard Air 360*, but Verizon 4G LTE was non-existent. OTA TV signal picked up a couple of TV stations.

Cook Forest State Park Campground & Cabins

    Coor Forest State Park

Beautiful park with huge pine trees. 235 sites, many with electric. Most seem pretty level and big rig friendly. Good ATT & Verizon cell service. Nice trails and friendly campground hosts.

    Tionesta Rec. Area Campground

    Quiet, Wooded, on the Creek

Beautiful level sites, spaced nicely apart, full hook ups, with big picnic tables and fire rings with multi-tiered grate. We had sites #46 and 48 right above the creek surrounded by tall trees. Incredibly quiet. Great for those traveling with dogs. We had a bluegrass quintet playing two sites down from ours and it was amazing! Within a 30 min drive of Cook Forest State Park, where we did some terrific hiking on well marked trails. A farm stand in the open-air market right by the campground rounded out our dinner with fresh zucchini and tomatoes. Can’t comment on the bathhouses bc we didn’t use them.

Cook Forest State Park Campground & Cabins

    Beautiful

Cooks forest is absolutely gorgeous. I look forward to returning as there are a lot of hiking opportunities we missed. We stayed in the pet friendly area, which was nice. There is a pet trail through the woods that was really great to take our dog rather than walking around the campground. Our site was right next to a drinking water spigot and a path to the bath house. The sites near ours were in a wooded area, which felt more private than many of the other sites we saw. There was a fore pit and a picnic table. Our fire pit was behind where the camper was parked, which also felt more private. There is no alcohol permitted in PA state parks, so alcohol is prohibited in the campground as well. It was a great spot, and we look forward to returning.

    Bear Run Campground

    Cute and Clean

Bear Run offers pull through sites for larger RV's. The pool is smaller but still enjoyable.  Tons of activities always planned on the weekend.  Family Friendly Friendly!

Guide to Kittanning

Campground options near Kittanning, Pennsylvania range from family-owned resorts to mountain ridgetop accommodations across western PA. The region features varied terrain with elevation gains from 800 to 1,500 feet, creating distinct microclimates that affect camping conditions. Most campgrounds in this region sit within 30 miles of Kittanning with several open year-round despite Pennsylvania's seasonal weather patterns.

What to do

Creek exploration: At Silver Canoe Campground, visitors can fish in the small lake or rent paddle boats and canoes. "You can rent paddle boats or canoes to paddle around the lake," notes one camper who appreciated the water recreation options.

Amish community visits: Silver Canoe offers proximity to Smicksburg's Amish shopping district. "Short drive to Smicksburg to shop. You may hear the horse drawn buggies of the Amish who keep their boats here," according to a visitor who enjoyed the cultural experience.

Mountain biking: Outdoor enthusiasts can access nearby trails from Mountain View Camps. "Great place to stay close to hiking trails and fishing spots. Hit the mountain bike track, explore the ruins on the game lands, and might even see an albino fawn," notes one reviewer about the natural attractions.

Weekend activities: Many campgrounds offer scheduled events, particularly during peak season. "The campground has lots of planned activities on the weekends," reports one family who stayed at RV Village Camping Resort.

What campers like

Family programming: Rustic Acres RV Resort offers structured activities for children. "We were thrilled to find they had a children's program on Saturday mornings. Our children had a ball making crafts, playing games, finding items on a scavenger hunt and of course snacks!" one family reported about their experience.

Peaceful settings: Many campers appreciate the quiet environments. "Beautiful and peaceful campsite. Booked a 2 night stay and then decided to extend it another night," noted a visitor to Mountain View Camps.

Clean facilities: Campgrounds in the region maintain well-kept amenities. "The pool is probably one of the cleanest," commented a visitor about Campers Paradise, highlighting the maintained swimming areas found at several locations.

Community feel: Several campgrounds foster neighborly atmospheres. "I can't remember when we were at a campground where everyone said hi and waved to each other," shared one Rustic Acres visitor who enjoyed the social environment.

What you should know

Road access challenges: Some campgrounds require careful navigation on narrow mountain roads. "The hardest part is finding it. The roads get narrow so if in an RV call them for the easiest way in," advises a Mountain Top Campground visitor.

Grey water disposal systems: Mountain Top uses a unique grey water management approach. "Since they sit atop the mountain, the grey water hookup is a long hose that has an adapter which hooks up to your black and grey tank outlet and it runs down the hillside of the mountain into the grassy area," explains a camper.

Shower facilities: Some campgrounds have coin-operated showers. "Only disappointment was that the showers were coin operated, so you not only needed cash on hand but then had to turn those into special coins for the shower," notes one Mountain Top visitor.

Seasonal population: Many parks have permanent residents. "Mix of seasonal, weekly, and overnight," observed one traveler about Rustic Acres, highlighting the mixed-use nature of camping facilities in the region.

Tips for camping with families

Pool access: Mirror Lake RV Camping & Fishing provides swimming options for families. "The campgrounds are very nice they have a pool as well as a community building and camp store. We had 8 kids and 8 adults who all had a blast playing on the playground, floating down the creek, swimming in the pool, riding bicycles etc."

Creek play areas: Several campgrounds feature water play zones. "Alot of their sites are along a small creek which the kids play in and can float down," notes a Mirror Lake visitor about the natural water features.

Cabin options: For families without camping equipment, cabin rentals offer comfort. "The cabin was great, very clean and cozy. The campgrounds are very nice they have a pool as well as a community building and camp store."

Playground facilities: Look for campgrounds with play structures. "They have a really nice pool and playground for the kids," noted a visitor to Kalyumet Campground about their recreation amenities.

Tips from RVers

Site layouts: RV sites near Kittanning, Pennsylvania vary in size and layout. "The pull through sites are very ample," noted one traveler comparing regional sites, while another at Kalyumet mentioned that "some sites require over 50' of hose and multiple power cords to reach power box due to the great amount of trees."

Seasonal availability: When seeking RV camping near Kittanning, check operating dates. "This campground is open year round," reports a visitor about Mountain Top, which offers continuous access unlike seasonal operations that close between October and April.

Hookup configurations: Many campgrounds offer electric and water but limited sewer connections. "Full hookup site. Spacing between spots was not cramped at all," notes a Mountain Top visitor describing their RV site configuration.

Self-service amenities: Some campgrounds offer unattended supply access. "They had both ice and firewood available that was self service," mentions a Mountain Top reviewer about convenience features for RVers.
