What to do
Hiking trails access: Kentuck Campground at Ohiopyle State Park offers multiple trail connections. "From the campground trails head mostly straight down the mountain to the river or to the Great Allegheny Passage mult-use trail...that also runs through Ohiopyle. So give yourself time to climb them, as there are many switchbacks...pretty much straight up...but doable."
Wildlife viewing: Spring and fall are prime seasons for observing local wildlife at Ryerson Station State Park Campground. "We took our 8 month old on his first camping trip here Memorial Day weekend and really lucked out. After talking to some park rangers it was the first weekend in over a year that they had the campground open and fully operational."
Kayaking opportunities: The Youghiogheny River provides paddling routes for various skill levels. "Located on the Youghiogheny River. Many full hookups, great play ground for the kids. The only thing we didn't care for was the fire rings are all in sight of each other. Like a row parallel to the sites all the way down the line; not much privacy while cooking or enjoying your fire."
What campers like
Quiet environments: Campers consistently mention the peaceful settings at Tomlinson Run State Park Campground. "This is the one campground that my wife and I make it to every year. There's truly nothing special about it, except that is a very friendly, and laid back place to camp. It sits on top of a mountain well away from the rest of the park."
Privacy levels: Site selection matters for those seeking isolation. "We were in site 32 f loop. It is sunny so pick your spots. Clean rr's with good showers but a bit old. There is a lake with swimming and kayak rentals."
Seasonal beauty: Fall foliage peaks mid-October to early November in this region. "Trees are everywhere and wonderful during the fall season. We had a big night of rain and with the wind it dried up pretty quickly. Trails - lots of trails to choose from. Some were pretty easy some were a little hilly. My favorite was the fern trail - lots of ferns and a very pretty stream."
What you should know
Weather preparedness: Mountain elevation means rapid weather changes even in summer. "We stayed in sight 32 f loop. It is sunny so pick your spots. Clean rr's with good showers but a bit old. There is a lake with swimming and kayak rentals."
Terrain challenges: Many cabin locations involve steep access roads. "Very steep narrow roads to access campground and sites..sites not level and noisy, next to highway."
Cell service limitations: Coverage varies significantly by location and provider. At Raccoon Creek State Park Campground, "We needed a spot to stay for the night, and the drive up was not worth it. You drive up a long, steep, windy road to the campgrounds, not to mention the drive to get to the town was very out of the way. If you're on Sprint or T-mobile - there is no service."
Tips for camping with families
Swimming options: Several campgrounds offer swimming facilities beyond just the cabins. "There is a lake with swimming and kayak rentals. This rating is just a personal preference. We thought it was a little pricey, about $30 for one night."
Play facilities: Check which locations have dedicated children's areas. "They have a pool, fishing pond and a cloud pillow with the playground next to it along with two small dog play areas. Every week they organizes different themes for bingo, and other games. They also have Sunday pancake days."
Pet regulations: Madison-Pittsburgh S.E. KOA has specific pet-friendly cabin options. "The parking spots for non seasonal are okay, a few steep ones but the all haave gravel and a patch of grass with table and fire pit. Now thier monthly (which I have currently) man are those a nervous wreck! Very steep and awkward but we go it done."
Tips from RVers
Site leveling: Many cabin sites accommodate RVs but require additional equipment. "It had plenty of stuff for the kids to do but had a horrible smell. The site wasnt wasnt great either. It was a steep drop on the pull out. Twisted my stabilizer jack."
Weather extremes: Winter camping requires special preparation. "We're staying in the winter for a few nights to visit friends who live outside Pittsburgh. Friendly and cozy spot. They've done a great job in the winter despite the frigid weather by using heat tape on the spigots and leaving lots of information at the office."
Laundry availability: Long-term stays require facility access. "Laundry facilities are the best we have encountered. Big machines and dryers making life easier and less time spent doing laundry. Nice little pool and lake for fishing. Lots of full timers here. Nice bath houses."
