Best RV Parks & Resorts near Cowanesque Lake

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Cowanesque Lake area RV parks accommodate a range of motorhome sizes and preferences across several established campgrounds. Tompkins Campground provides paved parking pads with waterfront sites offering water and electric (50-amp) hookups, while others feature full hookup capability. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park PA Wilds in Mansfield operates from April through October with big-rig friendly sites and full hookup availability including sewer connections. Scenic View Campground LLC in Tioga remains open year-round with 50-amp electric service and sewer hookups for extended stays. Many sites throughout these parks include fire rings and picnic tables, with varying degrees of spacing between neighboring RVs. "The sites are closer together than most other COE parks where we've stayed. Our first week, we were on site 54 (W/E 50A) and waterfront. Our second week, we stayed on site 44 (FHU 50A) right across from the seldom used playground."

Between Watkins Glen and the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, RV travelers will encounter a mix of state parks and private campgrounds with varying amenity levels. Cell service can be spotty in this rural region, with one visitor noting "No Verizon phone service and very slow internet with a booster" at Tompkins. Dump stations are available at most parks, though Scenic View Campground doesn't advertise this service. Pets are generally permitted throughout area campgrounds with proper documentation. Many parks feature on-site markets for basic supplies, though larger shopping requires driving to towns 30-45 minutes away. During summer holiday weekends, advance reservations are strongly recommended as waterfront and premium hookup sites fill quickly. Access roads to some campgrounds include gravel inclines that may challenge less experienced RV drivers.

Robert H. Treman State Park Campground

    Good location

Location: This park is close to Ithaca which was the best part. Trails and Natural Features: We loved the waterfall, swimming area (seasonal so closed when we stayed), and the fall colors. Sites: They have very few electric sites so we decided to boondock. It surprised me that all the full hookup sites were reserved but very people actually showed up for their reservations while we stayed. Lame. And heads up that if you don’t stay in the big clearing for big rigs, there are tight turns between trees to get in and out of the non-electric sites. We ended up making a back-in site into a pull-through site… whoops. Starlink: I work remotely so internet is important. We weren’t camping in the clearing because those sites were booked, but even the Starlink struggled where we were and I ended up working from the library in town. So heads up if you need internet. Bathrooms: They were spacious but older. Temperature in the showers was tricky. Hot is cold and cold it hot. Cool stuff: They had compost bins and provide bags for all campers. That’s cool!

    Pine Cradle Lake Family Campground

Great campground in PA northern tier

The owners do a fantastic job keeping the campground shipshape. Restrooms/showers are immaculate any time of day. Heated swimming pool and the splash pad for kiddies is spotless as well. Nice, pull-through on gravel pad withfull-hookups that can take large rigs. Lake is lovely for fishing/kayaks/canoes. Seasonal campers are tidy. Only a few tent sites with water & electricity tucked into woods. Larger pull-through sites don't get a lot of shade, but there are back-in sites for shorter campers in wooded sites and shaded lake front, as well. Campground store sells ice-cream & nachos and supplies. Campground is pretty quiet during the week, but fills up on weekends with guests using own (or renting) golf carts. Activities on weekends. The campground sits atop one of NEPA's "rolling hills" in quiet, rural farming area. Cell service is spotty. Local winery/cafe just down the road for tastings and lunch. Row boat, paddle boat rentals.

    Finger Lakes RV Resort

Beautiful new spacious RV resort in excellent location.

We arrived on Saturday, 10.8.22 and are staying for a week. This is a delightful location. Rachel and Doug are cheerful, attentive, and very personable owners who are on-site at almost all times. This park just opened this year, so we checked in at an entrance building that they're using until their primary building is complete. We were greeted with delicious cookies, our site(#9) backs up to a wooded area(with a hiking path buried in there) with a lot of space. We booked early, which was a good thing because they were 100% full for Indigenous People's Day. We chose this site because there was a lot of room around it and we're used to really tightly packed RV parks. But what we found is that all of the sites are very nicely spread out with generous spacing, so that's not an issue. It's still nice to be on the outskirts. We also chose this section per a review we read to be away from the main road noise, but there really isn't much road noise to worry about, anyway. The WiFi is strong and consistent. We're using 30amps, but they also have 20 and 50amp service to each site. The water pressure is great. The bath house is new and very comfortable. Each site has a picnic table, a fire ring and lots of room for big rigs. We watched Doug neaten up sites after other RV's vacated, which shows an attention to detail we don't often find. They also drive by each site every morning to collect trash and recycling. The sunsets are spectacular over the lake(we can't see the lake from here, but it's close). There are numerous award-winning wineries surrounding us and up and down the lake. We're headed out for tastings today. We've been hiking the last few days- Watkins Glen State Park- Gorge Trail(go early or it gets REALLY crowded), Taughannock State Park- Gorge& North Ridge Trail over on Cayuga Lake, and a concert(Rufus Wainwright) at Point of the Bluff Winery over on Keuka Lake. We stopped afterward for dinner in Hammondsport at Timber Stone Grill which was truly wonderful. That's about 35- 45 minutes away. Lots more hiking trails to do in the National Forest and surrounding areas. And there's Watkins Glen, a charming town just minutes away. We highly recommend Finger Lakes RV Resort and we'll be back!

    Happy Acres Resort

Nestled in the mountains of PA

Stayed for 5 nights with a partial hook up for our brand new 32 foot travel trailer. Other reviewers had mentioned that sites were small, so we specifically asked for a larger site. We ended up getting a corner site right on the edge of a hill looking down on the main office and playground. It was perfect. Playground was huge with multiple playsets suitable for all ages. Bathrooms/showers we're clean and well kept. There was a basketball court, shuffleboard and carpet pool that you could borrow equipment for. Our son and his family rented a wolf den cabin and it was very clean as well. Internet access was spotty, as expected but WiFi at the main office was good. We enjoyed the small, but very clean pool. Would definitely go back. Pet friendly, but there isn't a dog park/off leash area. Staff were friendly and helpful. Right across the street from little pine state park.

    Ferenbaugh Campground

    Relaxing place to stay

This CG has two distinct sections. Near the entrance is the Pull Through Area. Behind a row of trees there are several sites with full hookups including cable TV and Wi-Fi. The sites are open, reasonably level, and a good size. The other sites are in the woods, most of these sites do not have sewer connections. There is a honey wagon service available. We camped with a relative who was new and we were teaching them how to operate their camper. We had a couple of dry days then some rain. Still was a great teaching/learning experience.

Make sure you use a water filter, there was a lot of sediment in the water when we were there. See pictures of 4 days on a new cartridge.

We had a fantastic sunrise one morning.

    Leonard Harrison State Park Campground

Site 17 Site maps can be deceptive

General: This is a small 28-site campground located on the east rim of the canyon; seven of the sites are electric and six of them are pet-friendly. We reserved site 17 after looking at the site map because it looked like there was a generous amount of separation between this site and the surrounding ones, however, upon arrival, this was not the case. Although some of the sites are generous in size, there is no physical separation between them. Site 1 would, in my opinion, be the best of the non-electric sites for privacy. Sites 6 and 8, while close to the bathhouse, would likely have people walking through your site to get to the bathhouse. Campers have worn a path between these sites to access it. Props to this park for having recycling bins for plastic, glass, and aluminum. While this park is open year-round, the campground is only open from the second Friday in April through the third weekend in October.

Site Quality: The parking pad is delineated by rocks but not very clearly defined. There is a generously sized picnic table and fire ring to complete the grassy site.

Bathhouse: Very clean (we have found most Pennsylvania state parks excel in their bathhouse cleanliness). Hot water (definitely appreciated on this cold weekend!) and one handicap accessible shower (but it was too cold while we were there to want to take a shower although it did look inviting).

Activities: Two hiking trails on the east rim where the campground is located. The Turkey Path was closed about ¾ mile down (by the waterfall) due to storm damage. Although the trail was clearly marked closed at this point, many chose to ignore it and continue on☹. This trail is challenging as it has steep switchbacks down and back up again and it is narrow and slippery but definitely worth doing. The Overlook Trail, while not long (less than a mile), is also challenging with down and uphills. If you don’t want to (or can’t) access these trails, there is an observation platform where you can enjoy great views of the canyon. All of these trails are accessible from the campground. There is also a long multi-use trail for hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing. There is a nice playground accessible from the campground.

Conclusion: We were here the last weekend the campground was open and while the fall foliage was not experiencing the best year, it was still very beautiful at this park, and we enjoyed the hikes.

    Keuka Lake State Park Campground

    Wonderful Finger Lakes Camping

Large grassy sites with privacy between the sites. Most sites have a good level gravel pad to park on.

We stayed in the non-electric loop with a small travel trailer, but there are electric sites available. Spigots for water are spaced well enough that with a few lengths you can fill up.

The hike to the beach wasn't too bad through the woods, with ones being a grassy walking path and the other being a dirt trail through the woods. The beach is typically crowded.

This is a place I would always recommend.

    Ives Run

    Best campground in Northcentral PA

Taking everything into consideration, it’s hard to find a nicer campground to stay for a night or two weeks.

    • clean, well maintained and monitored.

    • large sites on macadam pads. Large fields behind most sites for activities.

    • full hook ups available

    • numerous hiking trails, large lake for boating, fishing and swimming.

    • centrally located between Mansfield, Wellsboro and Corning

    *pet friendly. Alcohol allowed

the only draw back is that it fills up quickly and you need to reserve many months ahead of time especially for holidays. Not group camping friendly because of the reservation system. No pavilions for group activities within the Campground

Guide to Cowanesque Lake

Cowanesque Lake camping options extend from northeastern Pennsylvania into New York's Southern Tier, offering RV accommodations in the Allegheny foothills at elevations between 1,080 and 1,450 feet. This region experiences warm summers with typical July temperatures reaching the low 80s, while spring and fall nights often dip below 50°F. The area's mix of hardwood forests and open meadows creates varied camping environments around the 1,090-acre lake.

What to do

Waterfall exploration: The Finger Lakes RV Resort serves as a convenient base for waterfall seekers, located 45 minutes from both Watkins Glen and Ithaca. "Easy drive to Watkins Glen, Lake Seneca, Ithaca, and the greater Finger Lakes region... We've been hiking the last few days- Watkins Glen State Park- Gorge Trail(go early or it gets REALLY crowded), Taughannock State Park- Gorge& North Ridge Trail over on Cayuga Lake."

Wine tasting: Several Cowanesque Lake rv campgrounds offer proximity to Finger Lakes wineries. "The campground sites are very large and spread out... they are bookended by two wineries with walking paths from the campground." Numerous vineyards surround the lake areas, making wine tours a popular activity from April through October.

Fishing: Camp Bell Campground and other parks near Cowanesque Lake provide fishing opportunities. "They have a fenced in pond for catch and release fishing," notes one visitor. Pennsylvania fishing licenses are required ($22.97 for non-resident one-day permits) for those fishing at Cowanesque Lake itself.

What campers like

Large, well-spaced sites: At Ferenbaugh Campground, campers appreciate the site layout options. "Lots of Trees and Shade OR Plenty of Grass and Sun; whichever is your preference, they have you covered!" This contrasts with some other area campgrounds where sites can be more compact.

Well-maintained facilities: Cleanliness ranks high on camper satisfaction at area campgrounds. "Everything is in great condition and clean. Daily trash and recycling pick-up from each site." Bathroom facilities at several Cowanesque Lake area campgrounds receive positive reviews, with one camper noting, "The bath house is immaculate and rivals those at Fort Wilderness Resort."

Family-friendly amenities: Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park PA Wilds delivers extensive recreational facilities. "Two playgrounds, a pool, two jumping pillows, mini train, carousel, and activities. Good for bike riding although hilly." Many campgrounds in the area offer recreational amenities beyond just the natural surroundings.

What you should know

Water quality varies: Several campgrounds near Cowanesque Lake have issues with water quality. "Make sure you use a water filter, there was a lot of sediment in the water when we were there. See pictures of 4 days on a new cartridge." Another camper noted, "The only bad comment I would make is there water is very smelly and brown. I actually bought a dual stage water filter and change it every two weeks."

Reservation timing: Holiday weekends fill quickly at Tompkins and other lake-area campgrounds, with waterfront sites booking 3-6 months in advance. "This area is pretty with rolling hills all around so we enjoyed a couple of scenic drives." Early booking is essential during peak season.

Access challenges: Some campgrounds have steep entry roads. "The entry road to the campground itself is a very steep, narrow road with a small curve at the top. It's well-maintained but keep an eye out for campers coming down. There's space for getting by but it's tight." GPS directions can also be unreliable in this rural area.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: When selecting a site at family-oriented rv campgrounds near Cowanesque Lake, consider playground proximity. "We always get a site on the outside of the main circle by the tower slide. There's lots of shade and optimum view of both playgrounds to keep an eye on the kiddos." Sites with views of play areas allow parents to supervise while relaxing.

Activity scheduling: Sunflower Acres and similar parks offer structured activities. "Lots of great activities here! This camp keeps the kids and dogs busy!! The pool is clean and looks great." Many campgrounds offer weekend-specific themed activities, especially during summer months.

Weather preparation: The Cowanesque Lake area experiences significant temperature swings, particularly in spring and fall. Pack layers and rain gear, as afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer months. One camper experienced "a severe thunderstorm one evening which resulted in an area-wide power outage that lasted a couple days."

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: When booking at RV parks near Cowanesque Lake, check site measurements carefully. "The site we booked online had bad measurements, so when we got there we found our trailer wouldn't fit. The camp map is close but not very accurate, so calling them to book if you have any questions is the way to go."

Connectivity considerations: Cell service varies widely among Cowanesque Lake rv campgrounds. While some parks offer reliable wifi, cellular coverage can be spotty. "The WiFi is strong and consistent. We're using 30amps, but they also have 20 and 50amp service to each site. The water pressure is great."

Hookup variations: Full-hookup sites with 50-amp service are limited at some parks, so book early for these premium connections. At Scenic View Campground, "The camper lots hook ups could use an upgrade." Most campgrounds offer a mix of partial and full hookup sites with varying amperage options.
