Best RV Parks & Resorts near Claysville, PA

Washington-Pittsburgh SW KOA offers full hookup RV sites including 50-amp electric service, water, and sewer connections approximately 6 miles from Claysville. The campground features pull-through sites suitable for larger motorhomes and operates from March through December. Mountain Top Campground provides RV camping with electric, water, and gray water hookups, though no full sewer connections at most sites. Most RV pads are graveled with wooden borders and relatively level. The Shadow Lake RV Resort in nearby Woodsfield, Ohio contains big-rig friendly sites with full hookups across a 100-acre property. "Spacing between spots was not cramped at all. The central bathroom, pay shower, and laundry room had AC, a couch and were quite clean."

Navigation to several mountain campgrounds requires careful driving on narrow, winding roads that may challenge larger motorhomes. Pine Cove Beach Club RV Resort provides year-round access with 50-amp service and full hookups, while Clayton's RV Park is situated closer to Claysville proper. Cell service varies significantly throughout the region's valleys, with Verizon generally providing better coverage than other carriers. Most RV parks feature dump stations and trash service, though availability of propane fills is limited. A review noted that "to get to the campground, you have to drive several miles on a two lane winding road. Hard to navigate a vehicle in those road conditions." Pet policies are generally accommodating, with most parks allowing leashed pets, though specific breed restrictions may apply.

    Tomlinson Run State Park Campground

    Nice little State Park

Tomlinson Run is a small state park situated in the northern panhandle of West Virginia nestled between eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. Plenty of things to do there including but not limited to…. Mini golf, hiking trails, biking, swimming, fishing, paddle boats, parks for the kids, and of course the camping. The campsites here are mainly gravel pads with the exception being the asphalt handicapped spots (2). Most spots are 30 amp with a few 50 amp (new for 2021). The park also has a few primitive spots available and some yurts and cabins to rent. I have a 38’ fifth wheel and the spots are tight for it (even the couple pull thru). Campground facilities are clean but dated. They state new facilities are coming soon. The campground is at the top of a hill and the spots are wooded and shaded. I would consider the camping to be spaced generously (room to stretch out). They have a small camp store and information available. A breakfast is available during peak season for a small fee. They do have water and a dump station available (free for campers to use).

    Raccoon Creek State Park Campground

    Raccoon Creek Camping

This is a large state park offering electric only sites

The sites are set amounts the forest and there are several loops to choose from. Loop F is pet friendly. All sites are within walking distance to amenities

Amenities are quite run down but functional

Wildlife is beautiful and its a short ~10min drive to the beach area of Raccoon Creek lake.

Two (2) dump station spots and fresh water taps location throughout the park

NOTE: Many sites are not level, you will require blocks/timber to level out campers. Tent campers should choose their site using the photos on the state park site.

All sites have a paved car space.

    Tomlinson Run State Park Campground

    Very wooded campground

General: 50-site (all but six with electric hookups) campground plus two yurts and three cabins. Two sites are handicap accessible.

Site Quality: The sites have gravel pads (except the handicap-accessible ones which were paved). The sites were completely covered with leaves when we were there which made it challenging to determine where the actual (narrow) pad was. Sites appeared to be level. A fire ring and wooden picnic table complete the site.

Bathhouse: A little dated but clean. Two of the stall doors did not latch properly. Didn't use the shower so cannot comment but there was a sign indicating it took a while for the water to warm up.

Activities/Amenities: There is a small camper store, laundry, and a playground. In season, there is lake swimming and a boat dock. There is a fishing area, mini-golf and disc golf, and several short hiking trails. Unfortunately, since we arrived late afternoon and had to depart early the following day (and were camping off-season), we could not take advantage of any of these things. What we lose in activities, we gain in a quieter camping experience with fewer crowds, which is generally preferable for us!

    Washington-Pittsburgh SW KOA

    KOA - Monthly Stay

Camping in a 33 ft travel trailer with slides. Verizon service is great. Wifi in extended parking doesn’t work well. The staff are helpful and polite. We are in the extended stay part of the campground which is quiet and slightly more secluded than the other spots.

    Fox Den Acres Campground

    Nice family campground

This is a large campground with play grounds, well maintained pool and grounds, fishing, party pavilions, and store. The staff is nice and helpful. It’s very military positive, even includes a reserved place for the fallen soldiers. Some sites are a bit close, the pull through sites are very ample. Gravel roads and level sites. Lots of grass areas for play and walking. I think the weekends would be too full for my taste but mid week was very quiet.

    Tomlinson Run State Park Campground

    Camping in the trees

Electric Site 37 - pad is pretty level, plenty for our small camper and truck, on a slight hill to get to fire ring but lots of space to spread out. You could tent but not really a flat spot. We were near the non-electric cul de sac and a neighbor right across but not on top of each other. Trees are everywhere and wonderful during the fall season. We had a big night of rain and with the wind it dried up pretty quickly.

Camp store - small, not a lot in it but may be end of the season items only. Mostly shirts and mugs and very little snack food. The camp store staff were all very friendly and helpful and the store has limited WiFi if you stood in the right spot. There is a laundry room available there as well.

Dump station- 2 way and potable water on the other side of it. The only place to drop your trash too.

Trails - lots of trails to choose from. Some were pretty easy some were a little hilly. My favorite was the fern trail - lots of ferns and a very pretty stream. Hiking poles are recommended especially if it rains.

Playground - is available for kids and a huge shelter house too.

Firewood is $6 a bundle and burns well, no slab cut.

Water - have to go up to entrance as the water spouts are still shut off.

Showers - in womens the shower on the left never got warm, other two were fine. There are 4 flush toilets.

    Coopers Rock State Forest

    Must See Sunsets

This is the largest state forest in West Virginia, it has a total of 25 sites that vary in their privacy. Each site has electrical hookups, picnic tables, fire grates, and utility post. The sites in the middle of the loop lack privacy that the outer loop sites have. There is one bath house that has hot showers, flush toilets, water spigots, and now WIFI. Pets are allowed but must be kept on a leash. There are gravel pull-ins for the sites, there are a couple of pull through sites for RVs.

The campground gets busy during the fall because it is so close to Morgantown and Mountaineer games. There are lots of hiking trails, coopers rock is definitely a must to see during sunset. Ravens rock is also a beautiful look out trail. Rock climbers have a lot of rock outcroppings on short trails for climbers to utilize. Fishing, biking, and hunting are also popular activities that can be done here.

Guide to Claysville

RV sites near Claysville, Pennsylvania can be found within 15-25 miles of the town center, scattered throughout southwestern Pennsylvania and nearby eastern Ohio. Most campgrounds in this region sit at elevations between 1,000-1,400 feet, with many situated along creeks or small lakes that provide fishing opportunities. The terrain features rolling hills with narrow roads connecting most destinations, especially in more rural areas.

What to do

Fishing in stocked ponds: At Shadow Lake RV Resort, guests can fish in several on-property ponds. "There are several ponds located on the property and trails meander along and around the 100 acre property. We see deer almost every evening," notes one camper who stayed for a month.

Kayaking with rentals: The Blue Canoe RV Resort offers kayaking access with convenient river entry points. "Located on the Youghiogheny River. Many full hookups, great play ground for the kids. Staff make multiple rounds, picks up your trash and delivers your purchased firewood," reports a visitor, though they mentioned the river access ramp could be muddy after rain.

Hiking nearby gorges: Within driving distance of Claysville camping areas are hiking trails with rock formations. "There are a couple hiking trails nearby (Piatt Park and Raven's Rock) which have incredible rock formations in the gorges," explains a camper from Shadow Lake.

What campers like

Pool facilities: Austin Lake RV Park & Cabins features swimming options with water activities. "Tons of stuff to do here... Inflatable slides and such in the lake, hiking trials, playgrounds, all sorts of stuff," shares one visitor. Another mentions that "Lake and scenery was beautiful! Very clean and friendly help!"

Quiet wooded sites: Zion Retreat & RV Park provides peaceful camping among trees. "The views are amazing! If you love peace and quiet this is the place for you. All sites are amongst the very tall trees," reports one reviewer who appreciated the natural setting.

Utility management: Most parks offer responsive maintenance staff for utility issues. A camper at Washington-Pittsburgh SW KOA mentioned, "We had some issues with our power, and Larry was at our site within minutes to fix it."

What you should know

Highway noise levels: Some campgrounds near Claysville are situated close to major roads. "It can be a bit noisy though as it it is right next to the highway," notes one visitor about Washington-Pittsburgh SW KOA.

Cellular connectivity: Many camping areas have limited phone service. One camper at Austin Lake advises, "No phone service at all, no matter the carrier."

Shower facilities: Bathroom quality varies widely between locations. "The bathroom had some newer looking siding & some flowers, but the floor in the women's bathroom had holes in it. It smelled funny in there too," notes a recent KOA visitor.

Additional activity fees: Some campgrounds charge for amenities beyond site fees. One Austin Lake visitor cautions, "Kayaking, inflatables, beach, but almost anything you want to do will cost you an additional charge. Need to use the bathhouse? Better take quarters....bc the showers are coin operated."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: The Blue Canoe RV Resort provides play areas throughout the property. "The seasonal RVers and weekend warriors have long claimed their sites, but for through riders on the trail there is a special place to camp, close to the west-bound entrance," notes one visitor, highlighting designated areas for different users.

Campsite spacing: Consider site proximity for family privacy. "Spacing between sites was a bit close, think KOA close. This might be a turnoff if the campground was full," observed a Zion Retreat visitor, though they also mentioned it wasn't an issue when the park wasn't crowded.

Water recreation options: Some locations offer kid-friendly water activities. "They loved the lake and everything there was to do on it. Kayaks, paddle boards, jumps, slides," reports a family at Austin Lake.

Morning announcements: Be prepared for early wake-up calls at some locations. "Super loud PA system throughout the whole park that wakes you up at 8am every morning like you are in prison!" warns one camper about Austin Lake's morning announcements.

Tips from RVers

Road access challenges: Pine Cove Beach Club RV Resort offers easier access than some alternatives. "Close to the highway but no road noise," mentions one RVer, unlike other Claysville area campgrounds with challenging approach roads.

Leveling requirements: Watch for uneven sites at some RV parks. "A dozen or so of the sites are not level, not only that but they are narrow and where you sit is a slope making it very uncomfortable," notes a Washington-Pittsburgh SW KOA visitor.

Seasonal availability: Many campgrounds near Claysville operate on limited schedules. Pine Cove Beach Club offers "modern hookups" and is accessible year-round according to reviewers, while Washington-Pittsburgh SW KOA operates from March through December.

Hill navigation: The terrain around Claysville demands careful driving. "Be advised it will seem a little sketchy getting in. The road dead-ends into the campground and it is all downhill getting there. Take your time and all will be just fine. Our rig is 39' & 16K," explains an RVer about Austin Lake access.
