Several RV parks surround Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania, offering a range of amenities for motorhome travelers. Erie KOA in McKean provides full hookup sites with both 30 and 50 amp service, operating from mid-April through mid-October with spacious pull-through options for big rigs. West Haven RV Park, open May through October, features level gravel sites with full hookups and is known for accommodating larger RVs. Mitchell Lake Campgrounds stands out as an RV-exclusive facility with only 11 sites, all equipped with electric, water, and sewer connections including both 30 and 50 amp service. Presque Isle Passage RV Park offers year-round camping with full hookup sites that can handle larger motorhomes. "The sites are generally spacious, and are gravel based," noted one RV camper about the region's typical setup.

Cell service varies significantly throughout the area, with most parks reporting adequate Verizon coverage but spotty service from other carriers. Dump stations are available at all the major RV parks, though some smaller facilities may require using nearby public options. Many campgrounds in the region close for winter, with only Presque Isle Passage remaining open year-round for RV camping. Pet policies are generally accommodating, with designated dog areas at several parks. Propane is available on-site at Erie KOA and Presque Isle Passage. Reservations are strongly recommended during summer weekends and fall foliage season when RV sites fill quickly. Most parks feature gravel pads rather than concrete, so leveling blocks are recommended equipment for RV travelers planning to camp in this region.

      Thousand Trails Kenisee Lake

Great spacious park with 2 lakes!

Kenisee Lake RV Resort Thousand Trails in Jefferson, Ohio is a another great Thousand Trails park! This park is very large and has a park-like setting with 2 lakes. There is fishing on the lakes and the campground has rowboats available to use. They have all the amenities a family could want such as swimming pool, playground, mini-golf, and more! The staff is friendly and very accommodating. Kenisee Lake has 30 and 50 amp FHU back-in and pull-through sites. The only downside is the internet which is lacking in this area. We have really enjoyed our stay here and will be returning! 👍🏻😬

Sun Retreats Geneva on the Lake

It's Easy to Love this Campground

As newbies to all things RV, we needed a place in Ohio to break in our new travel trailer. Indian Creek is family and pet friendly with all the amenities and even a great lookout spot across the street where you can take in a Lake Erie sunset. We loved the clean bathrooms and appreciated the staff's effort to maintain services while encouraging social distancing. All of their COVID-19 policies were well spelled out online and in signage across the resort so that you knew what to expect. All of the staff wore masks and bathrooms were cleaned often. Some of their usual events and programs were unavailable but they offered craft kits for children to pick up and do at their own campsite in lieu of the usual program. We enjoyed their beautiful put-put course and ice cream stand. They did not allow outside visitors in the resort. The only thing that threw us off was that the bathhouses were closed at night and we didn't know that until we tried to use them. The resort is expanding and adding new sites. They are planting lots of trees (it looked like one at each site) so the resort should become more park-like and less parking lot as they grow. We really liked the back-in sites with water and electric hookups because they were larger and more private and wooded. The fire ring was so easy to cook on that now I'm spoiled! The camp store/gas station was convenient and well stocked with camping supplies. Golf carts are available to rent if you need them to navigate this huge park. We rode our bikes instead. There is a township park just down the road towards Geneva-on-the-Lake proper that we used to spend some leisure and exercise time near the lake. We look forward to visiting this RV resort again in the future!

      Hearts Content Recreation Area

Quiet, Fairly Remote, Pleasant National Forest Campground

Allegheny National Forest is Pennsylvania's only National Forest and a gem of a location for outdoor recreation. Hearts Content itself is a well-maintained, very quiet campground with some of the most private sites we've experienced in 15 years of regular car camping.

Site A02 is very nice for privacy, one of the three front sites which means a bit of road traffic for other arriving campers, but covered by dense old-growth forest on all three sides and well set off the road. Ample tree coverage means an excellent shade canopy, but not-so-great if you're powering your rig with solar.

Clean, good-tasting drinking water at several community water spigots are available, and the central grassy area even contains a clean and well-maintained playground.

The campground itself is actually across the road from the Recreation Area. The Recreation Area is home to 3 nice hiking trails, including one all-season trail that converts to a cross-country skiing trail in the snowy months, as well as some picnic tables and a restroom.

The campground has a couple pit toilets that have been very well maintained by campground hosts each year we've been there. Zero smell or problems here, they appear to be looked after daily. They are still pit toilets so this is not exactly a luxury affair, but as pit toilets go, these definitely suffice.

      ---

INTERNET: One bar of usable Verizon 4G LTE and T-Mobile 4G LTE suitable for slow web browsing and e-mail, but little else. Because of the very dense tree cover here, Starlink is not really a viable option. The most southern facing sites have more of a clearing which may work for Starlink, but are smaller, less private, and also face the group campsite which is well trafficked by Boy Scout troops and other summer camp gatherings, so you're upping your noise quite a bit.

      ---

MAJOR PROS: This is a great campground to just enjoy camping. Set some 15 miles back in old growth forest, the most private of the campsites provide a very pleasant wilderness experience but still some well-maintained amenities like fresh drinking water and good pit toilets. In our experience camping here several times over several years, weekdays are very quiet at this location, perhaps the quietest of any campground of this size and caliber we've experienced anywhere. It's only really Friday evenings and Saturdays where you'll see more than 3-4 other campers in this place.

      ---

The closest nearby town is Warren, PA a small but service-rich town set on the Allegheny River that provides all the necessary stuff - a Wal Mart,  a Lowes, and plenty of restaurants and little shops. Warren is the longtime home of a refinery of some sort and on days when the downwind is blowing especially strong, you can catch the faint whiff of a funky but ambiguous smell of…something?

Cell service kicks up to 5G on T-Mobile in Warren itself, but you're still stuck on 4G with Verizon, as of summer 2022.

Back to the campground, I would highly recommend this place for people who can get out there on weekdays and enjoy peace and quiet. Firewood is available for sale at the Camp Host campsite, but there's so much downed wood behind just about every site that purchasing wood really isn't necessary: you can keep a hot fire going all night, for free, just by cleaning out the underbrush.

This is such a pretty, quiet campsite that during weekdays the area deer will often approach from the woods behind the campsites to feast on low hanging leaves. We've seen dozens of them who will get within 10-20 yards of you for a snack later into the night. While never getting too close, it does make for a pleasant wildlife viewing opportunity.

We really like this place. No showers or other running-water facilities and limited internet service prevent this place from being a perfect 5. It is also a bit of a drive into town for provisions or daily ingress if you need these amenities. That aside, tent, trailer or RV, you are likely to enjoy your experience here if you enjoy camping at all.

      Buckaloons

      Roomy and wooded

We come here at least once per summer. It is very family friendly, pet friendly and just beautiful. If you kayak, you can drop in up in Warren and come in right at the campground. Ice and wood available on site. Dollar general close by just in case.

      Chautauqua Gorge State Forest Campground

      Great Free spot

I would 100% stay here again. Hubby & i enjoyed it and was not busy at all. A family friendly place. I have a 16 ft long travel trailer and was great but i would not recommend anything bigger. There’s only 2 spots for travel trailers, camper van’s and the rest of the 6 spots are for tents. First come first serve. You can only stay here 3 nights max

      Mercer-Grove City KOA

      Really nice!

Very well maintained campground with lots of amenities, esp for kids (pool, playground). Generous sized sites, not too close together. Looks like quite a few long-term RVers here. Cute chickens wandering around. Hiking trail accessible from the campsite. Heavily wooded and quiet, but not too far off interstate.

      Mosquito Lake State Park Campground

Beautiful campground, choose your site wisely

When we arrived, we checked in at the camp office. The ladies there were very kind. The roads through the campground are wide enough for two-way traffic and nicely paved.

This is a beautiful, heavily treed campground. Even on Memorial Day weekend with lots of people, the park was very peaceful. The sounds of birds permeate the air round the clock. Chipmunks run amok. They’re just so cute.

We booked site 56 for our 39’ fifth wheel. As soon as we pulled up, we knew there was no way we’d fit even though the reservation site said it would accommodate a 40’ rig. The camp hosts happened to be passing by as we were surveying the site. They were very helpful redirecting us to a nearby site that would be more suitable. FYI, sites 55 and 56 have deep culverts on either side. One wrong turn and you’re going to have a problem. The majority of sites along our road were just wide enough to keep the tires out of the dirt, but not wide enough for the stairs to land on asphalt. If you have a motorhome or other wide-bodied rig, like an Alliance Paradigm, I would recommend choosing one of the sites on the loop around the playground. Those are better suited for newer big rigs.

TIP…the line at the dump station is long on the holiday weekends. Plan accordingly.

      Tionesta Rec. Area Campground

      Nice COE

There was not a real address to set our RV GPS. Waze and Google maps will pull up directions by entering Tionesta Recreation Area. We came in from the west on US-6 to PA-66, and up PA-36. From I-80, take the exit for PA-36 then follow the signs to Tionesta and once you get near you'll see the Tionesta Recreation Area Signs. There are signs to the boat launch area so pay attention and follow the camping signs; the campground(CG) is on the right. If you come in from Tionesta, once you clear the town the CG area is to the left. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon around 3:00 PM and the COE entrance building was not manned, so we took a picture of the CG map and proceeded to back-in site 100 with 50 AMP FHUs. There were no obstacles so our back-in was one and done. The site was just long enough for our 39’ fifth wheel(recreation.gov stated max length 48 ft RV) and we had to park our F450 diagonally in front. We noticed that the site post already had our names and dates of stay. The utilities were about 3/4 the way to the back of the site so no problems with sewer, water, or electric cord lengths. The water pressure was okay at about 42 psi. We did not receive any OTA channels but this site and several others back up to a huge berm so you can get satellite. Most of the sites in the CG have mature trees so the satellite is iffy. We got 2 bars on Verizon. The site lengths vary in the CG and the lengths from the reservation site seemed to be fairly correct. There were quite a few larger rigs here. Most if not all of the sites in this CG are full hookups. We noticed that some were 30/20 AMP. Sites closer to the front of the CG, especially along the river, tend to be close to each other. We found that the 90s- 100s area has the best site spacing with site 100 being one of the most spacious sites. After watching a 40’ 5th wheel struggle to back into site 113, we decided this site is not a good choice for rigs over 35 feet or for someone with below-average backing abilities due to the obstacles getting into the site. The pad angles at 90 degrees, there’s a ditch across the road from the site making it difficult to swing the tow vehicle, and there are trees to avoid. We enjoyed walking our dogs through the CG and watching the groundhogs in the rocks behind our site. We noted during our 4-day stay towards the end of June that restaurants and other sights such as museums may be closed Monday, Tuesday, and/or Wednesday. Get out and explore PA Route 666, which includes the Nebraska bridge, Tall Oaks Gift Shop, and Frog rock.

      Geneva State Park Campground

      Monster Campsites!

This park has huge campsites ! The pads are paved and they left a section of trees/woods behind each site to provide some privacy between neighbors. The bathrooms are very clean and the staff were helpful and friendly. The park is directly across the road from the paved bike trail which leads to the beach, marina, lodge and strip area. The trail is dog friendly but the beach is not. The campground is also pet friendly.

    Guide to Cambridge Springs

Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania sits in the glacial till plains of Crawford County at an elevation of about 1,220 feet. Winter temperatures often drop below freezing with significant snowfall, while summers are warm and humid with average July temperatures around 70°F. Most local campgrounds operate seasonally from April through October due to the harsh northwestern Pennsylvania winters.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities: Several campgrounds feature private fishing ponds where visitors can enjoy catch-and-release fishing without a license. At Presque Isle Passage RV Park, families can fish in the stocked pond, then explore nearby Lake Erie. One family noted their stay included "3 day stay. Clean, nice, stuff for kids. Room for big rigs, and tents. Yurts and cabins available."

Playground facilities: Most campgrounds offer playground equipment designed for children of various ages. Erie KOA maintains an extensive playground area that received "2 thumbs up from a 4 and 6 year old" according to one camper. The KOA also features a "bounce mat that our kids loved" and organized activities like movie nights.

Mini golf courses: Several parks maintain mini golf facilities for family entertainment. At Kenisee's Grand River Campground, visitors enjoy the on-site course as part of a range of recreational options. One camper noted the campground offers "multiple fishing ponds, Friday night bingo, bands, fishing tournament for kids, duck race, Christmas in July and many other activities."

    What campers like

Quiet wooded sites: Many campers appreciate the secluded sites available at certain campgrounds. At West Haven RV Park and Campground, tent campers can request more private areas. According to one visitor: "The site was nice, kinda secluded but could still see RVs and people driving around. Was pretty quiet though."

Clean facilities: Bathroom cleanliness stands out in many reviews. Campers at RV Village Camping Resort frequently mention the well-maintained facilities. One reviewer stated it was "by far the nicest family campground that we stayed in" and noted they were "going to make this our most favorite spot in western Pa."

Community atmosphere: Many campgrounds host weekend activities that create a neighborhood feel. Seasonal campers often form tight-knit communities. As one camper at RV Village noted: "There are a ton of permanent sites which the folks are all very friendly. The resort is golf cart friendly and that's how most get around."

    What you should know

Seasonal operation: Most campgrounds in the area operate from April through October. Sites fill quickly during peak summer weekends and fall color season, requiring advance booking. According to a visitor at Erie KOA, the campground is "open 4/17/2020 - 10/18/2020" with bookings filling rapidly during summer weekends.

Site terrain variations: Many campgrounds feature gravel sites that may require leveling. One camper at Thousand Trails Kenisee Lake noted: "Kenisee Lake has 30 and 50 amp FHU back-in and pull-through sites" but warned about internet connectivity issues in the area.

Road noise concerns: Campgrounds near highways may experience traffic noise, especially at night. At Presque Isle Passage, one camper observed their stay was affected by "being so close to the gas station/truck stop. Very bright lights on all night. Also close to the highway so there is constant noise!"

    Tips for camping with families

Pool availability: During hot summer months, pools become essential for family enjoyment. The pool at RV Village Camping Resort "and playground are awesome for the kiddos" according to one reviewer, providing relief during July and August when temperatures frequently reach the 80s.

Activity schedules: Check campground calendars for family events before booking. Erie KOA offers regular programming including "a movie night every night" and is "close to Presque Isle and the amusement park, which is a fantastic place for kids."

Cabin alternatives: When weather turns unpredictable, cabin rentals provide comfort for families with young children. One Erie KOA visitor explained how "our trip was almost ruined when our popup cable system failed and we could not use our camper. The staff was able to move us to a cabin and prevent us having to find other accommodations."

    Tips from RVers

Cell service coverage: Verizon typically provides the most reliable coverage throughout the region, while other carriers offer spotty service. At Thousand Trails Kenisee Lake, one RVer noted it's "a wonderful place to work from remotely if you have an external antenna to cellular internet."

Site selection strategy: Request sites away from main roads and common areas for quieter stays. One camper at Erie KOA recommended: "Camped in the back behind the pond in popup camper. Nice and quite back there and close to the bath house and wash station. There is more privacy between sites and lots of shade on the loop around the pond."

Leveling requirements: Bring leveling blocks as many sites throughout the region have slight grades. One RVer at Presque Isle Passage observed: "Sites are not level and are close to each other" while another mentioned "nothing special" about the sites themselves but acknowledged they accommodate larger rigs.
