Description

State Park

Lake Owyhee State Park is a remote oasis on the eastern edge of Oregon that offers camping and boating on the shore of a scenic desert canyon reservoir. The park contains two campgrounds along Owyhee Reservoir, a 53-mile-long lake that fills a narrow, deep canyon brimming with colorful volcanic rock formations.

The Gordon Gulch Day-use Area is open year-round and includes picnic tables and a boat ramp. Many boaters return each year to explore the desert canyon and rugged mountains. Some of the reservoir's incredible geology is visible only by boat. Anglers are awarded excellent warm water catches, especially large mouth bass, white and black crappie. The reservoir also has catfish and is occasionally stocked with rainbow trout. Look for golden eagles, coyotes, ground squirrels, rabbits, pronghorn antelope, mule deer, and wild horses (watch out for rattlesnakes, too). You might even see California bighorn sheep or a mountain lion.

McCormick Campground

Very nice campground. Well kept and very clean. They also have showers. The camp host was very nice and helpful. It offers both sites with hookups and tent sites as well.

McCormick State Park

The park was well kept and very clean and we had a great view of the lake from our spot. We came here to kayak and did load our Hobie Mirages on the kayak wheels and pulled them down to the lake which was about a quarter mile over big rocks and gravel because of the extremely low water level. . It was pretty kayaking but getting them to the water and back (which was now uphill) deterred us from going the next day. If the water level had been normal this would have been a five star review. On the way to the campground we followed the river to the reservoir and along the river there were many many beautiful dispersed camping opportunities which we will do on another trip to fish.

McCormack Campground

We stayed at site 40 at McCormack Campground of Lake Owyhee State Park. We called a few hours I heard and were told that there were several walk up so it’s available. When we arrived this has not changed. The drive up to the park is very scenic with lots of spots for flyfishing. The campground and the facilities ade clean and the views are beautiful. There is currently fire pit and grill ban but propane and butane cooktops are allowed. The water level it was long but still plenty for a swim. There were several fishing water skiing boats on the lake. Would have gladly stayed a couple more days. The only complaint was that the occupants of trailer sites above had their porch/string/rope lights on still at midnight taking away from the beauty of the night sky.

Amazing!

This was an incredible campground. We went in the off season, so we were literally alone for a week and a half. No ranger, no campers, just us and the lake and the deer. (and a couple of occasional cattle!)

The views are breathtaking and the park is surrounded by BLM land for plenty of hiking opportunities. The road in features a hot spring and a one-lane tunnel. An added bonus is that the road in features numerous easy to access dispersed campsites along the river on BLM land.

A couple of things to keep in mind: This campground is roughly 40 miles from the nearest medical facilities and there is NO cell phone reception.

Awesome views, clean campground, scary road in

Spent two nights in our 25' trailer at this great campground. Stunning views, clean and safe campground. Did a lot of fishing with two young boys (7 and 9) and caught a decent amount of fish with help from other campers. The road in is very narrow, single lane, winding, and along the side of a steep cliff into the lake, maybe 15 minutes to drive. Pretty scary. Glad we didn't encounter any cars or boats coming the other direction. But overall had a great time, and would go back again.

Lake, Hot Springs, Underrated area in Southeastern Oregon

Awesome campground in southeastern Oregon. Even on a busy Memorial Day weekend, able to find a spot last minute. The hot springs are perfect, the lake is awesome for boating, paddleboarding, kayaking, fishing, etc.
