Badger Lake Campground

The rough access road to Badger Lake Campground requires high clearance vehicles, with rocks and ruts that challenge standard cars along the final stretch. Located within Mt. Hood National Forest near Dufur, this $10-per-night campground operates from late June through October and accommodates RVs up to 16 feet.

Forest Service sites spread across open terrain provide picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets. A creek runs near the camping area, while the lake sits about a quarter-mile away through terrain that proves too rough for many vehicles. Lisa K. notes to "bring a kayak or SUP to enjoy the lake" and mentions seeing anglers catch trout from the water.

The campground maintains a quiet atmosphere away from main roads. Several reviewers mention having sites to themselves, particularly those who choose spots near the creek rather than attempting the drive closer to the lake. The area attracts both car campers and backpackers, with hiking trails extending beyond the immediate camping zone.

Campers should pack for primitive conditions and verify their vehicle can handle the rocky approach road before committing to the drive up.

Fee Info

Badger Lake Campground is receiving a new recreation fee of $10 per night beginning in July 2023 as part of the fee changes that were approved in early 2023.

Campers regularly cited the stunning lake setting and remarkably peaceful atmosphere as major highlights. However, all visitors emphasized the very rough, rocky access road requiring high-clearance 4WD vehicles to reach the best sites.

It's beautiful

It is very beautiful but when they say it's a rough road it is a very very rough and rocky road I barely made it in my four-wheel drive and there's a very skinny downhill with a cliff with lots of jump rocks

Peaceful Get-a-Way

The drive up the the lake is not super peaceful but once you get there it's pretty great. Once you get onto the FR 4860-140 spur road it gets a bit rough with limited places to pull over to pass oncoming vehicles.

I preferred camping away from the lake since I had the whole place to myself.

Worth the rough drive

You’ll want a high clearance/4wd vehicle. We took my Honda Element and had to camp in the campground instead of near the lake, which was 1/4 mile from campground. Too many big rocks and ruts in the road to attempt. The lake is gorgeous and saw people catching trout. Bring a kayak or SUP to enjoy the lake. The campground was very peaceful, especially near the creek.

Backpacking Trail

This is a fairly easy trail to backpack on with lots of great sites to camp. If you’re hiking up to the lake you might want to make it a two day trip to really enjoy it. As a newcomer to backpacking, I wanted to hike a moderately inclined trail to test out my packing skills and learned very quickly that I needed to drop weight, although it was manageable on this trail so I was still able to have a good time.
