Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Joseph, OR

There is a lot of space in each camp. Not much land in between each camp so be courteous. Good drinking water. A fairly dirty pit bathroom. I’m pretty sure it’s pet friendly. You can walk to the reservoir. The beach is very rocky.

It's amazing how little things can create a good impression. The front desk lady was so friendly and helpful. The park was clean and well maintained. They had a cute little pet area with a fire hydrant in there. We specifically sought this place out because of the hot tub. It's so nice to soak after a long drive day. Most sites are pull through. Spots are small but they have a nice grass area. Seems that most people stay one night as they are passing through. Bathrooms were nice and very clean. Cute little store in the office. They also had a nice pool (which is currently closed). They offered a 10% Good Sam's discount. We would stay here again.

Located in the far northeast corner of Oregon, this state park has something for everyone. Wallowa Lake is known for it's natural beauty, fishing, and water sports. The surrounding mountains and wilderness area are spectacular. Ride the tram to the top of Mt Howard (not cheap, but worth it). Take advantage of the amusement spots. Stop by the lodge for a meal, a night's stay, or a beverage. Nearby Joseph is a fun spot with shopping, a brewery, galleries and eateries. If history is your thing, you can follow the trail of Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce. The Snake River canyon is a quick day trip.

Now on to the campground. It's large with all the amenities you expect from a great state park. The sites on the outside if thre loops are large. There's a marina on one end. Deer are generally present. Several hosts and rangers are in-site.

This has the typical state/federal issue of older campground when trailers were 20 feet long with no slides so it can be a little tight, but the location is incredible.   There's a marina with rental boats,the fish is good,  the town of Joseph is a couple miles away,  The tram and mini golf is a 1/2 walk up the road.  Be advised in Eastern Oregon each town has a max of 1or 2 gas stations. Don't miss the tram.

I loved my visit to this State park. While the park is very crowded, there are plenty of places to hide away to enjoy the lake, the river, or the mountains. There is a gentle nature path that runs above the campsites that also hooks into the more challenging Chief Joseph trail, so it has something to offer all activity and ability levels.

Cons: I wish that campground/hiking maps were more readily available.

Side note: As you drive around the lake to get to the park, make sure to stop at Old Chief Joseph's burial site. Honor those whose land this was.

The best state park we’ve visited, and we’ve been to many! Right on the lake, close to the tram and hiking, and close to the town of Joseph. We loved it here! The only regret was not staying longer.

I love this campground. It is near the lake, clean, with showers. There are go carts and mini golf nearby for families, and the gondola provides gorgeous views. You can hike, or ride up the mountains as well. Joseph is a great western and artistic community just at the other end of the lake. The people are wonderful and genuine.

Very friendly, helpful staff. We camped in our RV at two different sites. Very clean. We kayaked on the lake and went up Mount Howard on the tram where the views of the Eagle Cap wilderness were breathtaking. We also hiked up to Chief Joseph trail and did a loop back down to the campsite. Definitely somewhere I’d go back to.

Great location near the lake and town of Joseph. The park is really busy in the summertime with families and groups enjoying the lake. We had a great time spending two nights here, despite the crowds. It was easy to distance from others during covid times aside from the restrooms where mask usage was spotty. There are deer and their fawns that regularly visit which is cool to see (but don’t feed them)!

I should start with a few prefaces. I was at a state park on a holiday weekend. I don't rv camp. I usually camp during shoulder seasons.

Wallowa Lake is gorgeous. I regularly forgot that I was in Oregon. The snow capped peaks around the lake made me feel like I was in the Rockies.

The park was well equipped with showers, floral toilets, and dish washing sinks. The sites were reasonably well spaced.

The day use area was very crowded, but to be expected on a holiday weekend. The cottonwoods were snowing and it was magical.

This campground has about 200 sites. When each one of those sites is having a campfire, it creates a mini inversion and the smoke just hangs close to the ground, making it extremely difficult to breathe. I also noted that every night, at least one fire was left unattended, which was concerning.

The Chief Joseph trailhead is just at the edge of the park with an extremely steep first mile or so, but easing out into a lovely walk through the Eagle Cap Wilderness. Even on the holiday, I didn't see a single other person.

There is nothing too amazing about this campground except it's location.  It's large and busy and full of people. There aren't many trees, and you're pretty much next to your neighbors. If you don't mind this type of camping, you will love the area.

You can practically walk to the alpine tram, you're right on Wallowa lake, there's a great marina and lake access for your boat or SUP, and you're just a few minutes drive to Joseph. 

Also, the sunsets are incredible. 

This is a busy location. Sites fill up fast.

This is a nice little RV park that is close to most things in the Joseph area.  There are several RV sites as well as tent sites.  There are also several sites that look like full time RVer's that live in the park.  The sites were a little close together, but they were able to move us after the first night so we had a little more privacy.  The bathrooms and showers were clean.  The campground was very quiet with great views of the mountains.  There is a little store onsite that also has games and books to barrow.

More and more I'm staying at USFS campgrounds and enjoying the experiences. Yes, they're dry, but they're cheap, dark, quiet and in exceptionally beautiful places. Ollokot is in the Hell's Canyon Recreation area and is seriously the best campground I've encounter on my latest 4 week fall trip. Located right on the Imnaha River, the scenery is breathtaking, the sites are big with lots of room. It's a short drive up to the Hell's Canyon Overlook which is spectacular. Only downside is the road out of Joseph to get there.....it's not for the faint of heart if you have a larger RV. Narrow, potholes and absolutely no wiggle room. It's six inches between you and the side of the canyon. So take it SLOW!!!
