Best Cabin Camping near Idanha, OR

Several rustic cabin options near Idanha, Oregon provide a comfortable base for outdoor exploration. Detroit Lake State Recreation Area offers cabin accommodations alongside traditional tent and RV sites. Cabins at River Mountain RV Park provide electric hookups with picnic tables and fire rings for outdoor meals. "We stayed in a rustic cabin at this park and it was perfect. Two full beds and two small bunks make for an affordable spot for friends to gather," notes one visitor about the cabins at nearby Silver Falls State Park. Other cabin rentals include Gold Butte Lookout, which provides a more remote experience, and Olallie Lake Guard Station Cabin with its primitive amenities.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. The Olallie Lake Resort offers several rustic cabin rentals, while the Guard Station Cabin features more basic facilities including a kitchen with hot and cold running water, propane-powered stove/oven, refrigerator, and built-in lights. According to one reviewer, "The Guard Station Cabin must be rented from Recreation.gov and has much less basic facilities." Reservations are essential, particularly during summer months when cabins book quickly. Many cabins prohibit pets, though some locations offer pet-friendly options. Winter availability varies by location, with some properties closing seasonally.

Most log cabins include beds with mattresses but require visitors to bring their own linens, sleeping bags, and pillows. Several reviewers note the importance of bringing bedding, as cabins typically provide only basic furnishings. Cooking facilities range from propane stoves in more equipped cabins to simple fire pits with grills at more primitive sites. The Olallie Lake Guard Station Cabin includes a kitchen with running water and propane appliances, while other cabins may have only minimal facilities. Nearby stores in Detroit provide basic provisions, though selection is limited, and campers should plan to bring most food and supplies from larger towns.

    Olallie Lake Resort

    Correction

There are a couple differences between the Olallie Lake Resort and its facilities vs The Olallie Lake Guard Station Cabin. Although near to each other on the lake, and both managed by the  resort staff, the Guard Station Cabin is owed by the Forest Service. They do not allow pets in the cabin or in your car when you rent it.

The resort rents a number of rustic cabins themselves, along with two yurts, and operates a number of nearby campgrounds, the store, and the boat rentals.

The Guard Station Cabin must be rented from Recreation.gov , and has much less basic facilities, kitchen with hot & cold running water.  Propane powered stove/oven,  refrigerator , and built in lights.  Pit toilet nearby,

I believe the other reviews refer to the resort's cabins.

Smith Creek Village — Silver Falls State Park

    Very nice cabin getaway

Smith Creek Village is such a great place for easy lodging in nature. My family stayed in one of the tiny cabins. The cabin was very clean and well kept. The cabin was nearby a few other similar cabins, but everything felt very private. There was nice walking paths and a large grass area supplied with lawn games.

We decided to take the easy route this particular trip and ate all our meals at the Big Leaf Coffeehouse. The food there is fantastic and the building has a cozy lodge vibe.

Another thing that I loved about Smith Creek Village is that although the Silver Falls state park is always busy, Smith Creek Village is not. It feels like a hidden gem inside the state park. We definitely plan on coming back.

    Mt Hood Village Resort

The Ultimate Mt Hood Base Camp

Not my normal camping scene, but decided to for an early summer ski session with the kids, we didn't want to completely rough it, but also didn't want to pay hotel prices. So, one of the standard cabins here was the perfect compromise. Roof over our heads, actual beds, room for three of us to be able to gear up for the day. But still had a fire pit outside, and picnic table for outdoor cooking. (Also the standard cabins don't have bathrooms, so you still need to go to the shared restrooms.)

The property overall was really nice, lots of amenities. We also took a walk through the RV/Tent camp sites. Its very similar to a KOA style of resort. We enjoyed it for what it was.

Smith Creek Village — Silver Falls State Park

    Cozy cabins, close to falls.

We stayed in a rustic cabin at this park and it was perfect. Two full beds and two small bunks make for an affordable spot for friends to gather. Book in advance because it fills up fast. The cabins are basic, but do have electricity. The bathrooms are clean and well maintained. The tent sites were pretty close to each other and there were a lot of kids. Walked to the waterfalls from the cabin in the early am, amazing!

    Clear Lake Resort

    Best place to canoe

A small quaint Resort. Would love to stay at the cabins, but my schedule is the same as everyone else. Was told by the Ranger to come and stay after Labor Day, they are open year round. I find it easy to bring my kayak up and use the lake to enjoy rowing around. This would be a great place for those paddle boards. The lake is for non-motorized boats. Can do fishing too. The Lodge is open as a restaurant between Memorial to Labor day. Boat rentals, cabin rentals and tent sites avaiable check the www.linnparks.com or call (541) 967-3917. A must to RSVP

Deschutes River Campground — The Cove Palisades State Park

    Fun Times!

This campground has it all, except water. Although, the water is nearby & there's bumper boats! Electricity, running water, showers, a fire pit, picnic table, a campstore, & firewood for sale. We only stayed two nights, but we had a great time. We went to nearby Richardson Rock Ranch & came back to the campground in the evenings. We will be coming back.

Smith Creek Village — Silver Falls State Park

    Beautiful location-great hiking nearby!

This campground is one I wanted to visit for the chance to check out the hiking trail nearby that has tons of waterfalls along it (Ten Falls Trail). I wasn't sure I would be able to hike very far and I was right. I hiked down into the canyon to walk behind South Falls. It was spectacular! I’m glad I hiked that particular trial since I only had enough energy for that one. It was quite steep down into the canyon and wet in most areas. Watch your step! The full trail is 8.2 miles. They had a nice place to buy snacks and meals, a gift shop, and had nice printed trail information posted at the trailhead. The campground itself isn’t huge and was fully booked, but it is decently laid out (sites have nice space between them). Most sites are shaded. They sell firewood, have a pavilion with picnic tables, a playground for the kids, and have a few small cabins you can rent by the night. The campground is kind of close to a somewhat busy road, but the noise wasn’t too bad. The bathhouse was clean and approximately 100 yards from my campsite down a footpath. The only thing I was disappointed to see was that two of the 4 showers were out of order. I had fantastic cell service here (AT&T) and was able to text, call, and go online on my phone (which is nice since I work online). Given the fact that I was unable to physically do more hiking this trip, I would definitely come back to this campground to try another section of the trail to see more waterfalls since the trailhead is only 1.5 miles from the campground.

    Pelton Park Campground

Great dog and family friendly campground

Pelton park was clean and well taken care of during our visit. The park is very family-friendly, with easy physical access to restrooms, the docks and playground equipment. Pet-friendly too, stocked poo bags, poles by restrooms to hold leashes and a small fenced-in area to let the dogs run and play. Docks were clean and safe. Rental boats were well-maintained. The yomes are small, 6 people and 2 dogs is tight and gear had to stay outside with that many people, but we all fit. The lake itself is beautiful, good fishing, and appreciate the 10mph speed limit throughout the majority of the lake.

Smith Creek Village — Silver Falls State Park

    Lovely

Went with an ex many years ago. We stayed in one of the small cabins very close to the upper trail to the falls.I think... lol

The cabin was cozy and stayed very warm as we went in the winter. We only walked around a short ways but the snow was beautiful and it was serenely quiet.

Guide to Idanha

Camping options near Idanha, Oregon include six Forest Service campgrounds surrounding Detroit Lake, all within a 15-mile radius. Situated at approximately 1,600 feet elevation, Idanha serves as a gateway to Mount Hood National Forest where seasonal temperature fluctuations can create challenging camping conditions, particularly during spring snowmelt and fall rain periods. Several cabin rentals operate year-round, offering alternatives to tent camping during adverse weather.

What to do

Hiking around lakes: Detroit Lake State Recreation Area offers multiple trails with lake access points. "There's a nice wooded path along the lake," mentions Lindsey T., who notes the dog and kid-friendly environment. The rangers maintain several hiking options for various skill levels.

Boating and fishing: Clear Lake provides excellent non-motorized boating opportunities with rentals available. "The lake was beautiful & inviting & great fun for the kids," shares Rhiannon S. about her experience at Detroit Lake State Recreation Area. The lake is stocked with rainbow trout, making fishing a popular activity.

Winter exploration: Some cabin accommodations remain open year-round. "We love Detroit Lake just as much during the off season as we do during the summer. The spots are generous and the lake is really cool without water!" notes Jill T., highlighting how the area transforms seasonally.

What campers like

Forest surroundings: At Silver Falls State Park, the dense tree cover creates comfortable camping environments. "Tree lined campgrounds were well maintained. Sites are close together and the grounds are very social (which we like)," describes Sarah H., who appreciated the ranger-led evening programs.

Waterfront sites: Peninsula Campground at Olallie Lake offers prime lakeside camping. "All of the camp spots have access right on the water, with a nice picnic table, and fire pit!" explains Natasha R., who recommends stargazing: "The stars are worth seeing. You will be AMAZED. You will see shooting stars guaranteed!"

Hot showers: Clean facilities stand out at several campgrounds. "One of the best parts about Detroit Lake campgrounds is the restrooms. They are clean and well-maintained. The showers are FREE, and they are hot!" writes Chanel C., emphasizing an amenity that campers consistently appreciate.

What you should know

Road conditions: Many forest roads require appropriate vehicles. When accessing Olallie Lake Resort, Brandon G. advises, "Don't try to drive those gravel roads in a small car (I drove up with a scion TC and a 12 minute drive took an hour having to avoid pot holes and everything)."

Reservation timing: Popular sites book quickly, especially waterfront locations. "This campground is first come, first serve and has limited cell access," reports Kelly N. about Olallie Lake, recommending early planning.

Weather preparedness: High elevation areas experience significant temperature changes. "Hot days, cold nights," notes Lana N., suggesting packing for variable conditions even during summer months.

Tips for camping with families

Lake activities: Coldwater Cove Campground offers clear water and safe swimming areas. "Clear Lake is absolutely gorgeous with its crystal clear water. Not ideal for swimming as the temperatures sit around 50 degrees year-round, but non-motorized boats are welcome," explains Ariel C., noting the rental options nearby.
