What to do
Lake activities at Suttle Lake: Rent canoes or kayaks at Blue Bay Campground where the clear waters provide views of underwater features. "The lake was beautiful and we enjoyed going up to the lodge to rent canoes! We will definitely return here. It's also about a 10 minute drive to sisters if you forget anything!" writes Christine C.
Hot spring soaking: Belknap Hot Springs Lodge and Gardens offers mineral pools for relaxation after hiking. "Pools were definitely relaxing and easy to reserve. My parents liked the main pool near the lodge because it's bigger and more open, I preferred the smaller pool because it was quieter and more zen like," notes Ivy E.
Hiking at Clear Lake: Coldwater Cove Campground provides trail access around Clear Lake with its unique underwater features. "There is a trail that circumvents the lake. Great for walking/jogging/biking. The lake is wonderful for boating and swimming. There are multiple lake access points along the trail," explains Sarah R.
What campers like
Private cabin settings: Cabins at The Camp in Bend feature restored vintage trailers with modern amenities. "The Camp is a small and cozy parking lot campground in the middle of Bend Oregon. It has a mix of RV camping and vintage RV bungalows. This is a perfect place to spend the night making your way thru Bend," shares Berton M.
Mountain views from sites: Cabin stays near Link Creek Campground provide scenic mountain backdrops. "Link Creek, Suttle Lake has a unique explosion of camp sites all around. We happen to be on the west side of the lake with a handful of friends while our other handful went glamping in one of the several cabins on the east side," explains Luke W.
Water proximity: Cabins near Lake Billy Chinook at The Cove Palisades offer direct water access. "There are two campgrounds here: Crooked River Campground and Deschutes River Campground. We stayed in the deschutes, it's closer to the water than the crooked river," notes Troy B.
What you should know
Reservation requirements: Most cabin facilities require advance booking, especially during summer. For Blue Bay Campground, "We got last min reservations for this campground and fell in love with it! Our spot was by the road and I was worried it would be noisy, but it wasn't bad and never heard a car at night," writes Heather P.
Seasonal availability: Many cabin rentals operate on limited schedules. Link Creek facilities are typically open "April 26 to November 26," while Blue Bay operates "May 13 to September 21."
Temperature variations: Pack for significant day-night temperature swings. "Weather was sunny upper 80's, the nights low 40's. This is a very quite campground, there was no noise from main road entering the campground," notes Jeff C. about camping near Sunriver.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly amenities: Thousand Trails Bend-Sunriver offers numerous activities for children. "The kids (mostly teens) found plenty to do with the pool, putt putt, pump track, etc. Some things could use a little work to be significantly improved (ground covering on putt putt course, etc) but overall was a great stay," shares Tiffany B.
Easy supply access: Position yourself near towns for forgotten items. "Sisters was a great small town. We did a waterfall hike, went to Bend a couple times, went for dinner and drinks at the Barn in Sisters which is a food truck park," mentions Rachel G.
Educational opportunities: Look for ranger programs during summer months. "They put on a power point for the kids about local animals. There were multiple day use areas to swim at just a two minute drive from there," notes Troy B. about Deschutes Campground.
Tips from RVers
Site selection considerations: The Cove Palisades State Park offers different cabin and RV options in two areas. "There are two campgrounds here: Crooked River Campground (E Loop mid-February through mid-December.) 91 electrical sites with water, Flush toilets/showers and Deschutes River Campground (A, B, C Loops - mid-May through mid-September) A and C Loop: 87 full hookup sites," explains Patti S.
Hookup locations: Check utility placement before booking. "The hookup plugs were really far away though from the spot itself," notes Denis K. about the Thousand Trails Bend-Sunriver facility.
Winter preparation: For year-round facilities, prepare for snow and limited amenities. Thousand Trails Bend-Sunriver stays open all year, but winter visitors should bring tire chains and extra blankets as temperatures frequently drop below freezing.
