    Champoeg State Heritage Area Campground

Good for biking, heated yurts, smaller tent spots

We've been here 3 times, once for tent camping and twice in a yurt. The yurts are heated, and a couple of them are pet friendly, which is great for us! There is a small table in each yurt. Theres a couch and a bunk bed for sleeping arrangements, with the lower bunk larger than the top bunk. Great walking trails and day use areas, and our favorite thing about this place is biking on the biking trails surrounding the area. Beautiful and close to civilization for a quick and low key camping trip. Great for beginner campers and families!

Lost Lake Resort And Campground — Mt. Hood National Forest

Beautiful, well maintained, generous sized campsites

Tent sites are large and spaced out so your not right next to your neighbors. It’s a little bit of a walk to the lake but enjoyable. We stayed in the A-frame cabin which is right off the parking lot so can be busy but is a generous size lot and has some shrubbery and trees for privacy. there’s a trail out right out the back of the lot. The cabin is small and rustic. Non motorized lake. Canoe, paddle board and boat rentals available and I highly recommend.

    Oxbow Regional Park

Close to the city with awesome playgrounds

The park just added two nature playgrounds that are pretty fantastic. One of the new playgrounds, right before the boat launch, features a trail with a mud kitchen, two a-frame tents and a big area where you can use fallen logs and branches to build shelters.

The other nature playground is right across from the old playground (still in use) and has a wooden water course with a hand pump and an elevated wooden plank course.

Camping can be a little loud since it's a popular spot and there are no pets allowed, but it's barely 30 minutes away from Portland and right on the Sandy River.

Smith Creek Village — Silver Falls State Park

    Very nice cabin getaway

Smith Creek Village is such a great place for easy lodging in nature. My family stayed in one of the tiny cabins. The cabin was very clean and well kept. The cabin was nearby a few other similar cabins, but everything felt very private. There was nice walking paths and a large grass area supplied with lawn games.

We decided to take the easy route this particular trip and ate all our meals at the Big Leaf Coffeehouse. The food there is fantastic and the building has a cozy lodge vibe.

Another thing that I loved about Smith Creek Village is that although the Silver Falls state park is always busy, Smith Creek Village is not. It feels like a hidden gem inside the state park. We definitely plan on coming back.

    Mt Hood Village Resort

The Ultimate Mt Hood Base Camp

Not my normal camping scene, but decided to for an early summer ski session with the kids, we didn't want to completely rough it, but also didn't want to pay hotel prices. So, one of the standard cabins here was the perfect compromise. Roof over our heads, actual beds, room for three of us to be able to gear up for the day. But still had a fire pit outside, and picnic table for outdoor cooking. (Also the standard cabins don't have bathrooms, so you still need to go to the shared restrooms.)

The property overall was really nice, lots of amenities. We also took a walk through the RV/Tent camp sites. Its very similar to a KOA style of resort. We enjoyed it for what it was.

Pros: Good lake to swim in, smaller state park so not too busy, kayaks you can rent, small playground if you have kids, pet frIendly cabIn I stayed In was faIrly secluded Cons: because it’s smaller, kids on bikes were on the road often so you have to be aware, only one shower stall in the restrooms

Smith Creek Village — Silver Falls State Park

    Cozy cabins, close to falls.

We stayed in a rustic cabin at this park and it was perfect. Two full beds and two small bunks make for an affordable spot for friends to gather. Book in advance because it fills up fast. The cabins are basic, but do have electricity. The bathrooms are clean and well maintained. The tent sites were pretty close to each other and there were a lot of kids. Walked to the waterfalls from the cabin in the early am, amazing!

Battle Ground Lake State Park Campground

Feels remote for being close to the city

BGLSP is a really lovely park not too far from Portland with camping and rustin cabins. Most of the campsites are large enough for 2 tents, and there were many RVs and popups - good size driveways/parking areas. Cabins C17 and C21 were the most private, though C13 and C15 had a partial view of the lake. Campsites 19 and 20 were really tucked back and adjoined such that two groups could spread out. There is only one bathroom for the entire camping/cabin area, and it got pretty dirty/crowded at times, so that wasn't ideal. I would also recommend checking out the water quality information before going if you plan to do water sports or swimming. There was a high bacteria advisory when we went, so swimming was discouraged. We ended up going to nearby Klineline Pond to swim instead. There is a nice little concession stand, though, and they offer SUP and kayak rentals that looked nice.

Lost Lake Resort And Campground — Mt. Hood National Forest

Gorgeous!! Bring hiking shoes & a headlamp.

The only thing missing from this amazing camping spot is electricity and running water. Otherwise, it’s perfect! Absolutely gorgeous view of Mt. Hood, tons of hiking, a beautiful lake and camping spots for everyone. They have walk-in spots, yurts, a-frames, RV spots, a horse camp and even a few rooms at the lodge. Make sure to spend at least 3-4 days!

Guide to Gladstone

Cabin camping options surrounding Gladstone, Oregon typically operate year-round with varying seasonal amenities. Most forest service cabins in the region sit at elevations between 400-1,200 feet, experiencing moderate rainfall throughout spring and fall months. Winter temperatures rarely drop below freezing at lower elevations, making cabins accessible without specialized equipment during most seasons.

What to do

Fishing access: Promontory Park provides direct access to North Fork Reservoir for anglers seeking trout and bass. "Beautiful campground on the shores of the North Fork Reservoir! The sites are tightly spaced with cabin, yurts and tent camping available. There is trout fishing starting May 22 and continues through October," notes one visitor to Promontory Park.

Historic exploration: At Champoeg State Heritage Area, visitors can tour preserved pioneer buildings and participate in heritage programs. "The farmhouse fascinated my boys... they got to water the garden with a water pump and buckets!" shares a camper about Champoeg State Heritage Area Campground.

Swimming spots: Many cabin locations provide summer swimming options in nearby lakes or rivers. At Oxbow Regional Park, "There is a play area for the kiddos along with walking paths along the water," making it ideal for warm-weather recreation.

What campers like

Privacy levels: Some cabins offer more seclusion than others. At Battle Ground Lake State Park, visitors mention the campground layout provides good separation. "The pet-friendly cabin I stayed in was fairly secluded," notes one reviewer at Battle Ground Lake State Park Campground.

Biking trails: Several parks feature dedicated cycling paths directly accessible from cabin areas. "Champoeg State Park is on the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway, and a great place to camp if you want to do a long biking getaway... lots of bike paths," reports a camper.

Family activities: Organized programs enhance cabin stays for younger visitors. "Matthew was AWESOME who put on two great activities for kids every day," writes a visitor about Oxbow Regional Park, noting the structured programming available.

What you should know

Reservation timing: Most cabins require advance booking, especially during peak seasons. "For being so close to the greater Portland area it felt like we were much further away. I would recommend this place, just make reservations early," advises a visitor to Champoeg State Heritage Area.

Site spacing: Cabin proximity varies significantly between parks. "Between our families, we had three young girls who got to attend two hosted activities per day," notes a visitor about Promontory Park, while another mentions "the set-up of many sites were terrible. There was little to no barrier between sites."

Utility access: Cell service can be limited at cabins near Gladstone. "Barely got 1 bar of 4g at the welcome center... Would be great if there was better connectivity," reports an Oxbow Regional Park visitor, highlighting the digital disconnect at many cabin locations.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several cabin locations feature dedicated play areas. "There is a huge playground for the kids," reports a camper at Feyrer Park, which offers "plenty of day use picnic tables, covered areas, playgrounds for kids as well as ramps for boat launching for fishing!"

Educational opportunities: History-focused parks provide learning experiences. "Cool Heritage Site! Not very good access to the river here, not the place to try and cool down, but a lot to see and do anyway," notes a visitor to Champoeg State Heritage Area.

Bathroom proximity: When booking cabins with children, consider restroom distances. "The restrooms and showers were a bit of a trek down a hill from our yome and weren't clean as well or as often as I would have liked," warns a Promontory Park visitor, highlighting planning considerations.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Larger cabin sites accommodate multiple vehicles for group stays. At Silver Falls State Park Campground, "Roads and campsites are paved and level. Short drive or hike to the falls," notes a recent visitor, highlighting the practical layout.

Storage needs: Cabins near Gladstone typically have limited secure storage. "Each site has a table, fire ring, grill and hook to hang your food or trash," reports an Oxbow visitor, describing available amenities.

Off-season advantages: Winter cabin camping offers greater availability and privacy. "Jan 8-10, 2021. If you live in PDX and want to get away from the city for a second, I highly recommend this campground. It got very cold at night so be prepared," shares a winter visitor to Oxbow Regional Park.
