Best Campgrounds near Altus, OK

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Camping opportunities around Altus, Oklahoma include several developed campgrounds between the Wichita Mountains and the plains of southwestern Oklahoma. Great Plains State Park Campground offers tent and RV sites with electric and water hookups along Tom Steed Reservoir, while Quartz Mountain State Park, approximately 30 miles northwest of Altus, provides camping options including tent sites, RV spots with full hookups, and cabin rentals. Military Park Altus AFB FamCamp serves Department of Defense ID cardholders with basic amenities including electric hookups, water, and sewer connections.

Many campgrounds in this region are open year-round, though seasonal weather patterns affect camping comfort. Summer temperatures frequently exceed 90°F, making water access and shade important considerations when selecting a site. While developed campgrounds provide amenities like showers, toilets, and electric hookups, Great Plains State Park also offers a free dispersed camping area accessible via rough dirt roads. Permits are not generally required for the state parks, but reservations are recommended, especially for weekend stays during peak season. A visitor noted, "The roads are a little rough but it's free with great views," referring to the dispersed camping area at Great Plains State Park.

Waterfront sites at both Great Plains and Quartz Mountain State Parks receive consistently positive reviews for their scenic views and access to recreational activities. The area features several hiking trails, fishing opportunities, and wildlife viewing. Campers particularly appreciate the relatively flat terrain at most established campgrounds, making setup easier for both tents and RVs. Several visitors mentioned the peaceful atmosphere, especially during weekdays or off-season periods. "The campgrounds and restrooms are clean and well kept; however, there aren't a lot of sites with substantial tree cover," noted one camper about Great Plains State Park. Wind can be a factor in this region, particularly at sites without natural windbreaks, so secure anchoring for tents and awnings is advisable.

    Elk City Lake Park

    Nice area

Very quiet and quaint area.  The lake was beautiful and the wild birds, geese, ducks and even an Eagle were nice to watch.

The park is not monitored as close as it should.  I did see one park vehicle and one police car during my 2 day stay.  A drop box for your $25/night fee (not $15 as the Dyrt states).  I did drop  my money but the vault did not look secure....

There was a homeless man that wandered about the park in his vehicle.  Seemed nice but a bit of a bother.  I would have stayed longer but he gave me the ick...

    Doris Campground

    Tons of wildlife

Visited first week of November 2025 during the government shutdown. Campground and all trails were open. Visitors center and environmental education center were closed. There was a camp host on site. All bathrooms were being maintained. PLEASE NOTE THE CAMPGROUND MAP ON THE FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE WEBSITE IS OUTDATED. I booked site 22 to be close to the restrooms and showers only to find out the building no longer existed. The area marked “Restroom & Shower Complex” is dirt. Also the two restrooms directly across from site 34 no longer existed either. I attached a picture with red Xs marking those out. The area marked “Central Restroom” is the only restroom with running water, flush toilets, and showers. All other restrooms on the map are vault toilets. Campground had lots of trees that made the sites feel a little more private even though some sites were close together. There are 4 individual shower rooms. Water was warm and it seemed that both the central bathroom and showers were heated. Firewood bundles and ice available on the backside of the campground entrance station. Cash only and self pay. So much wonderful wildlife. Take the time during the first hour of sunrise and the last hour before sunset to drive around to look at wildlife. I was able to see elk, deer, turkeys, and of course the bison and longhorns which are out and about all day.

    Oklahoma Welcome Center - Eastbound

    A Big Oklahoma Welcome

This rest stop and visitor area is perfect for a stop to walk or for an overnight stay. They have bathrooms, brochures for all the different regions of Oklahoma, pet area, large level lots, and great walking path. When you arrive the road splits one side for cars other for big rigs and RVs. Since we were worried about the noise from the semi trucks we found a road right before the truck lot to the right. We went by what appears to be a maintenance building and around behind that is a locked lot were they keep sand. We parked back here. It was quiet and level. No one came to ask us to leave and it appeared to be part of this rest area land. The truck and tv lot did fill up in the evening. The information center is open from 8:30-5 daily the the ladies inside were very friendly and helpful! Be careful with your pets. The grass area is full of those thorny burrs!! Our dog got a few before we discovered that, but the pet area was clear from those nasty things! Definitely a perfect welcome into Oklahoma.

Ole Town Cotton Gin RV Park

    Quick stop

We came in late and left early, so we didn't get to look inside the gin. Next time through, we will stop and look. The campsites were pretty full, and only one bathroom was open for this season, and the monthly renters had it tied up until 10 pm.

    Bobcat Creek RV Park

Dreaming of the hollow under the stars.

We selected Bobcat Creek RV Park due to price and location. Right off of Interstate 40 is this lovely camp nestled in a hollow surrounded by trees with a creek and trail running through it. We were guided to our site by an employee on a golf cart. The park was clean and well maintained even the fenced dog park was policed. We had a lovely stay.

Great Plains State Park Dispersed Campsite

    Wonderful View

Driving thru the area and needed a spot for the night; we lucked up with this one.

I would recommend using AppleMaps if possible; takes you right to the spot. If you are using Waze it will tell you to turn at what looks like a private driveway/road. If you have to use Waze, pass that road and take a right at stop sign, then a right at the wildlife sign. That will put you on the road you need to be on (you will turn left when you see primitive camping sign).

As previous reviews stated; the road is rough with ruts. We were able to handle it in our Ram 3500 with tow (42 feet) but we had to take it very slow.

If you like fishing this is a five star for you; fish jumping all night. We gave it 4 stars due to the over grown grass and mosquitoes. View and sounds were amazing.

    Sayre City Park Campground

    Clean and quiet campground

This campground was a nice find. Saw sign from I-40 and took a chance. Only $12 per night paid at kiosk. The site numbers can be confusing and didn't use bathrooms. Would definitely stay here again.

    Sayre City Park Campground

    Great place!

Convenient, inexpensive ($12) and well kept. What more can you ask for? How about a playground, pool and miniature golf? We just stopped for an overnight, so didn’t use these amenities, but they;re right there. We called for a reservation and were told its first-come, first-served “but there’s always room”. we were one of three campers on a friday night in August.

    Lake Lawtonka East Campground

    Lakeside Campsite

Plentiful campsites with several spots right on the lake! Fairly close rather and no way to book ahead but we definitely enjoyed the location!!

Guide to Altus

Camping spots near Altus, Oklahoma occupy a transition zone where the Wichita Mountains meet the plains of southwestern Oklahoma, at elevations ranging from 1,300 to 2,400 feet. Summer temperatures frequently reach triple digits, while winter camping can see overnight lows below freezing. The region experiences persistent winds across most campgrounds due to the flat terrain with limited natural windbreaks.

What to do

Hiking at Quartz Mountain: Multiple trails accommodate various experience levels at Quartz Mountain State Park. "We climbed Quartz Mountain on the first day. There is not a well marked trail, you just have to try and find the path of least resistance and not die. The view is well worth the hike (hiking shoes are a must, lots of slick rock)," notes Janna R.

Wildlife viewing: Bison, longhorn cattle, prairie dogs, and elk can be observed throughout the Wichita Mountains region. A visitor to Camp Doris recommends: "Take the time during the first hour of sunrise and the last hour before sunset to drive around to look at wildlife. I was able to see elk, deer, turkeys, and of course the bison and longhorns which are out and about all day."

Stargazing opportunities: The dark skies around Altus provide excellent conditions for astronomy. "Quartz Mountain is a National Dark Sky site and perfect for star gazing. The sites are almost 70 feet apart," shares Kelly B. about Copper Breaks State Park, adding that staff run daily activities for visitors.

What campers like

Wide-spaced sites: Many campers appreciate the privacy at certain campgrounds. "Our loop had 30 amp, not sure is 50 was available else where or not. Very nice park with some dislikes. Tables & fire rings were to the rear of the site, not along the side," notes Gary P. about Doris Campground.

Free dispersed options: Budget-conscious campers can find primitive camping areas. "The road is very rough, but we managed in our VW Atlas. Beautiful view of the mountain and lake. Very quiet and peaceful, and no other visitors," reports Benjamin G. about Great Plains State Park Dispersed Campsite.

Lake access and water activities: Several campgrounds feature waterfront sites. According to Janna R., Quartz Mountain State Park offers "many hiking trails, not very many bike trails. There is a paved bike trail, but it's not very long. We did use our bikes to ride around the campground and up on top of the dam."

What you should know

Water availability issues: Potable water access can be limited. A Camp Doris visitor warned: "No water available due to an ongoing E. Coli issue. An e.coli contamination in 2017 is still not resolved and any an all water is considered unsafe, including all streams and lakes. Bring in your own water, the closest store is at least 30 mins away."

Military facilities for eligible campers: Department of Defense ID cardholders can access base camping. "This site is located on Altus Air Force Base. It only has 12 sites. You must be a Department of Defense ID card holder to stay on base. The camp area has little to offer. It is only $17 a night and a good stop off if you are in the area," explains Kelly B. about Military Park Altus AFB FamCamp.

Wind exposure: The flat terrain provides limited protection from winds. A visitor noted about Great Plains Dispersed Campsite: "If you like fishing this is a five star for you; fish jumping all night. We gave it 4 stars due to the over grown grass and mosquitoes. View and sounds were amazing."

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly attractions: Several campgrounds offer recreational facilities beyond hiking. At Quartz Mountain State Park, "Take some cash they have peddle boats and kayaks you can rent and a little fun park with carnival type ride and water slides," suggests Sandra D.

Wildlife education opportunities: Families can observe various animals in their natural habitat. "We enjoyed driving over to Prairie Dog town and spending time laughing at their antics. Since our last visit, their area has really grown and continued to spread out," shares Roger H. about their Camp Doris experience.

Swimming beaches: Several lakes have designated swimming areas with gradually sloping shorelines. Crystal C. found that at Great Plains State Park Campground, "The beachfront was vast and amazing I could easily say this was what made it worth the trip. You could walk the beach, get in the water or enjoy a picnic through one of the shaded areas."

Tips from RVers

Electric hookup availability: Most campgrounds offer electric sites, but capacity varies. "Great little state park right on the shores of Tom Steed Reservoir. Sites are well spaced. Campground is well maintained. Good fishing. Lots of walking area around the lake. Friendly staff. Most all sites have a view of the water," notes Kelly B. about Great Plains State Park Campground.

Campsite surface conditions: RVers should prepare for various pad types. "We stayed in the Mountain View campground which has concrete pads and didn't have to level our rig at all. Electric and water and steps to the flush bathroom that has a shower in it. It backs up to the lake berm and has a view of one of the mountains," explains Jennifer O. about Quartz Mountain State Park Campground.

Cell service limitations: Connectivity can be poor throughout the region. An RVer noted about Doris Campground: "No service whatsoever Verizon or T-Mobile. Do not recommend if you have remote workdays!"
