CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Cabin accommodations near Willoughby range from rustic shelters to fully furnished units across several campgrounds. Penitentiary Glen Reservation offers cozy cabin sites with provided firewood and proximity to hiking trails. Headwaters Park features wooden lean-to structures with stone fireplaces overlooking the lake. "My friends and I decided to stay here for the weekend. Even with the colder weather it was nice and cozy. Plenty of fire wood provided and a short distance away from the gorge to walk," notes one visitor about Penitentiary Glen. Big Creek Park provides two rental sites and two lean-to options, plus a unique treehouse accommodation for guests seeking distinctive lodging.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. Some locations like Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA operate seasonally from May through October, while others remain accessible year-round. Kenisee's Grand River Campground welcomes pets at their cabin sites, making them suitable for family trips with four-legged companions. According to a camper at Kenisee's: "Stayed here for a girls weekend in Geneva at one of the tent sites... Located within a matter of minutes to several wineries in the area."

Most cabin accommodations require guests to bring their own bedding, pillows, and personal items. Basic furnishings typically include beds, tables, and seating, but kitchen facilities vary widely between locations. Thompson/Grand River Valley KOA provides more equipped cabin options with nearby market access for supplies. Roundup Lake RV Resort cabins include features like full bathrooms and kitchens in their Park Model units, though one review mentioned that "the bed was the only detractor of our trip, as it was mostly springs." Firewood is available for purchase at most locations, with some sites like Penitentiary Glen providing wood as part of the rental fee.

    West Branch State Park Campground

Well kept campground with access to beach and dock

Each campsite in on a leveled cement pad and comes with a fire ring a picnic table. There is plenty of room around your site and you don't feel crowded. Most sites offer nice tree coverage for shade. The restrooms and showers are very clean and well taken care of. There is also a laundry facility and sink outside each one for washing dishes and water fountains throughout the park. There is a nice beachfront for swimming and then a dock that be reached from outside the park. A beautiful lake for kayaking or boating. The store has most camping needs in it and once a week they host an ice cream social. Has a very nice playground and a sand volleyball court. There are some hiking trails, but nothing extensive.

    Roundup Lake RV Resort

Great Lively Place with lots of Amenities

Starting off, everyone from the employees to the other campers were super friendly! My boyfriend and I rented The Park Model Cabin which was sort of a half trailer with a full bathroom and full kitchen. The bed was the only detractor of our trip, as it was mostly springs. We brought our air mattress in for the second night and slept much better. The themed weekends throughout the season are fun and festive and there are a lot of activities to do and participate!

Sun Retreats Geneva on the Lake

It's Easy to Love this Campground

As newbies to all things RV, we needed a place in Ohio to break in our new travel trailer. Indian Creek is family and pet friendly with all the amenities and even a great lookout spot across the street where you can take in a Lake Erie sunset. We loved the clean bathrooms and appreciated the staff's effort to maintain services while encouraging social distancing. All of their COVID-19 policies were well spelled out online and in signage across the resort so that you knew what to expect. All of the staff wore masks and bathrooms were cleaned often. Some of their usual events and programs were unavailable but they offered craft kits for children to pick up and do at their own campsite in lieu of the usual program. We enjoyed their beautiful put-put course and ice cream stand. They did not allow outside visitors in the resort. The only thing that threw us off was that the bathhouses were closed at night and we didn't know that until we tried to use them. The resort is expanding and adding new sites. They are planting lots of trees (it looked like one at each site) so the resort should become more park-like and less parking lot as they grow. We really liked the back-in sites with water and electric hookups because they were larger and more private and wooded. The fire ring was so easy to cook on that now I'm spoiled! The camp store/gas station was convenient and well stocked with camping supplies. Golf carts are available to rent if you need them to navigate this huge park. We rode our bikes instead. There is a township park just down the road towards Geneva-on-the-Lake proper that we used to spend some leisure and exercise time near the lake. We look forward to visiting this RV resort again in the future!

    West Branch State Park Campground

    Wooded Waterside Sites

Make reservations! (6 months in advance).  Waterside sites fill up quickly! Check in is very easy as you pass the camp store on your way in. All campsites have a fire ring and picnic table.  West Branch has private, spacious, shady sites. We can launch our kayaks right from our campsite. The shower house and bathrooms are large and clean. There is even a book exchange shelf at the shower house in case of rainy days. The park office loans games and sports equipment to campers. Washers and dryers are also at the shower house. There is an outside sink to wash up dishes. Bring your boat or kayak. There are many inlets to explore or fish. There is a small beach at the campground but a larger one on the other side of the lake. There is a boat launch at the campground.  There are playgrounds for the children. An ice cream social is held on Saturday evenings that my children always love to attend. There is a newer dog park near the intersection of Rock Spring  and Esworthy roads. There are many scenic hiking trails at West Branch. Bridal trails are located on Esworthy Rd. West Branch is our favorite campground and we make sure to visit every year.

Jamestown Campground — Pymatuning State Park

great spot for direct kayak/canoe put in.

We stayed in site 218. this spot is in the smaller ( less crowded) part of Jamestown campground in Pymatuning SP. it is right on the water and has an easy access area for shore fishing and entering a kayak or canoe or some other water device. the site sits on a little bay and the otherside (more crowded) of the campground is across the water. the water is a little murky/ grassy but still good entry area. the campsite was spacious for a pa state park. the site is between the lake and the road. sites 212-222 look to be on the water with boat access, but 218 has the easiest entry. 220’s picnic Bench and fire pit sit next to the water with great views, but there is little shade. 218 had a great shady spot were you can hang 3 hammocks. there is no electricity at these sites and pretty much tent only. lots of tent space. the fire ring was decent but we moved it as it was right underneath a burnt tree. 218 was ADA accessible with a nice picnic table. restrooms were fairly close. clean... outdated, but clean.

Jamestown Campground — Pymatuning State Park

    Another trip to Jamestown Campground

My family has visited Pymatuning park many times now and try have used a variety of spots at Jamestown campground. It is large, offering multiple options for campsite types. It’s a standard PA state park campground offering bathrooms (bathrooms are older, but are being renovated July-August 2021) showers, fire ring, picnic table, etc. Campsites J-106 thru J-116 are well shaded, but are alongside route 322 which maintains consistent traffic at all hours. If the noise is not an issue, this run of tent sites are well spaced, and offer easy access to the facilities. To be away from the road (and nearer to the lake) sites J-120 thru J-128 are closer together but can be quieter (depending on your neighbors…)

The beach area is clean, and raked often. It has a playground and volleyball court. On Friday’s they have a family movie night at the amphitheater. Most Saturdays in the summer they offer crafts and activities for kids at the beach.

The surrounding area also has plenty of activities to offer: Local restaurants, ice cream, hiking, kayaking/boating, fishing, etc.

    Mosquito Lake State Park Campground

    Great State Park Campground

We just got back from our first trip to Mosquito Lake State Park Campground. All in all, it was a great experience.

We stayed in site 67, which is a waterfront site, with electric. The water is about 25 yards from the pad, but is visible from the entire site. The site was spacious, but not as private as some of the others. There is some woods between this site and the sites on either side, but other sites are visible. The fire pits and picnic tables were staggered, so it created some distance to make it feel more private.

The campground as a whole, was very quiet. We stayed from Wednesday to Friday. The group next to us seemed a little rowdy when we first pulled in, but by 10:00 there was no noise anywhere near us.

Most sites seemed pretty level from side to side, but where we were, several had a slope from front to back. Away from the waterfront, most sites looked pretty level. The amount of space between sites varied from site to site. Some sites had woods on both sides, while others were pretty open. Some had nice large grassy areas, others were much smaller. Sites from 214-224 are in a cul de sac and are water front, but they were pretty close together with very little privacy between sites, if any. They are very close to the water though.

There are bathrooms and water scatter about, but from what I saw there was only 1 shower house.

Wal-mart and other shopping and restaurants were about 3 miles away. Park was easy to get to, only one turn for us off the highway. Lake was great for kayaking and paddleboarding. Very nice dog park in a different part of the park. There is a boat launch accessible from inside the campground.

Dump station has 2 lanes which was nice when checking out. Fresh water fill up was also located near the dump station.

Linesville Campground — Pymatuning State Park

Great Park, Close to the Water!

The Linesville Campground is a mid-sized state park campground with level, wooded sites, right on the Pymantuning Lake. A short walk to the marina which hires boats and sells snacks& fuel. There is a campground fish cleaning station with complimentary fridges/freezers.

The amenities are well kept with plenty of space, located in the center of the park. There is also a laundry. They accommodate tents, RV’s and have cabins also. RV dump station and water fill up conveniently located in the center of the grounds.

The township of Linesville is just 5min drive from the park entrance. Great weekend escape from Pittsburgh. They welcome furry friends!

    Cabins could be better

The bunk beds have very thin rv style bunk bed mattresses. And the master bed mattress was a weak memory foam. Needs to invest in better mattresses.

Guide to Willoughby

Cabin accommodations near Willoughby, Ohio range from basic wilderness lean-tos to fully furnished vacation rentals at campgrounds within a 30-mile radius. Located in northeastern Ohio's glacial plateau region, the area experiences four distinct seasons with summer temperatures averaging 70-85°F and winter lows frequently dropping below freezing. Several cabin rentals remain open year-round, though amenities vary significantly by season and location.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: West Branch State Park Campground offers excellent lake fishing from waterside cabins. "Great site! Shades lots of space semi private area. Right off the water with area to tie boat for easy water access," notes a visitor who appreciated the direct water access.

Nature trails: At Big Creek Park, multiple small trails suitable for families connect cabin sites to fishing ponds. "Most of the trails are small, well-marked, accessible, and easily walkable for families... Quick tip: Bring some fishing rods! There are a few ponds on the property, complete with fishing docs, that are stocked with bluegill and small man fish," explains a camper.

Winter activities: While many cabin locations close seasonally, Mosquito Lake State Park Campground maintains year-round access. "Great lake to take the kayaks on. Lots of camping sites along the lake. Concert every Saturday during the summer," mentions one visitor who enjoys multiple seasons at the park.

What campers like

Private settings: Secluded cabin options at Headwaters Park feature lakefront views. "Campsite G is the one. It is an open lean to with a stone fireplace facing the inside of the three sided wooden structure... Its like you have the forest to yourselves out here," notes a reviewer who appreciated the isolation.

Family recreation: Sun Retreats Geneva on the Lake provides activities beyond cabin accommodation. "Slightly overpriced but lots of activities, super clean bathrooms, two pools, fishing pond, put-put golf, restaurant, store, minutes from Geneva on the lake," reports one visitor, highlighting the family-friendly amenities.

Distinctive lodging options: Woodside Lake Park offers unique cabin rentals with lake access. "The swimming pond has inflatables and boat rentals. There's good fishing, and typically lots of activities. The place is clean and friendly with a pretty good selection at the camp store," mentions a guest who found the combination of accommodations and recreation appealing.

What you should know

Seasonal variations: Many cabin facilities operate on limited schedules. "We were able to get a group site with friends along a wooded section. Every night we were visited by raccoons, they stole our trash on the first night but the other nights we kept everything out of their reach," reports a camper at Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA, which operates May through October.

Access challenges: Some wilderness cabins require significant hiking. "Would have given this site 5 stars but the walk to the site was a bit more of a haul than expected. It was just myself, kids, and pup. So it made setting up camp a bit more work," notes a visitor at Headwaters Park about their cabin experience.

Water conditions: Water quality varies significantly between cabin locations. A visitor to Woodside Lake Park observed: "Iron laden well water that is provided in at least half the park... It damages everything and they won't put a treatment system in at the well pump like the 2nd well has so you can filter it to an acceptable level."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Mosquito Lake State Park offers exceptional play areas near cabin sites. "Beach was great and there an epic playground for kids. If your kids are 8 and under they'll love the nature playground and nets provided to catch critters," explains a family who particularly appreciated the children's activities.

Swimming options: When booking cabins, consider locations with swimming access. At Woodside Lake Park, "The swimming pond has inflatables and boat rentals," making it particularly suitable for families with children seeking water recreation beyond fishing.

Weekend activities: Kenisee's Grand River Campground schedules regular family events near cabin accommodations. "It's a great place with a lot of events and entertainment for family's. Multiple fishing ponds, Friday night bingo, bands, fishing tournament for kids, duck race, Christmas in July and many other activities," reports a seasonal camper.

Tips from RVers

Proximity to attractions: Thompson/Grand River Valley KOA Holiday offers cabin options convenient to regional destinations. "This Campground is quiet, full of fun, for families or older people. Beautiful area. Many pull through lots, with patios. 50. 30. Full hookup, (sewer and Electric) back in, pull through, tent sites, cabins, teepees," explains a reviewer who appreciated the variety of accommodation types.

Site selection: When booking cabin accommodations, inquire about terrain. A West Branch State Park visitor cautions: "First impression we were not impressed with this park... Our site was labeled slight slope. That was a joke. We were only off 2 inches side to side but front to back we had to lower the front 15 inches."

Seasonal rental considerations: Many cabin rentals in the area have limited bathroom facilities in colder months. One Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA visitor noted: "The only thing that threw us off was that the bathhouses were closed at night and we didn't know that until we tried to use them."
