Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Springfield, OH

Buck Creek State Park Campground accommodates pets at all sites with concrete pads providing level camping spots for RVs and grassy areas for tents. The park offers year-round access with 30-amp electric hookups at most sites and full facilities including showers, potable water stations, and a sanitary dump station. Dogs must remain leashed throughout the campground and on hiking trails. John Bryan State Park Campground and Wright-Patterson FamCamp also welcome pets with similar restrictions. Sites at Buck Creek generally provide ample space between neighbors with picnic tables and fire rings standard at each location. The campground features access to a private beach area where some campers report seeing dogs cooling off in the water, though official pet swimming policies should be confirmed at check-in.

The network of hiking trails surrounding Buck Creek Reservoir provides excellent exercise opportunities for dogs, with multiple path options accessible directly from the campground. Wildlife sightings, particularly deer, are common along these trails, so keeping pets leashed is essential for both wildlife and pet safety. Many campers have noted problems with raccoons at Buck Creek, which have been known to chew through tents to access food, making proper food storage critical when camping with pets. The campground beach near sites 81-86 offers water access via a short trail and provides a convenient spot for launching kayaks with dogs. During summer months, the campground can become quite busy with local visitors, potentially creating a more active environment for pets that may be sensitive to crowds or noise.

    Scioto-Grove Metro Park

Can only stay there on Fridays and Saturdays

Only weekend stays and it ends in wintertime. I’m sure it’s pretty and all, but it’s hard to find legit, free dispersed camping in Ohio! Oh well, rest stops always work for car camping.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

    The dog’s favorite campground!

This was the only park we’ve gone to this uear with both a large dog park AND a fenced in dog beach! Folks were friendly at the dog park with bunches of chairs set around like a conversation pit. Lots of water and dog tennis balls were available.

The dog beach was fenced so your dog can be off leash. There is even a fenced in area out in the water to keep the pooches from swimming across the Lake chasing geese.

The campground itself was quite nice and spacious. Some of the most private camping sites I’ve seen in Ohio. Shower facilities we a bit above average mad seemed to be looked after at least once a day (we were there in the off season).

IMHO, one of the nicest campgrounds in the state.

    Cross Creek Camping Resort

    Very nice resort

We stayed two nights here on our tour of Ohio. After staying in state parks, the narrow sites are close with no privacy. Our pull through site was on the (inner) road, so lots of golf carts, cars and campers passing by. All pull through sites are on the road side. The site is not level and our leveling system has the front wheels off the ground. Many full time units here beautiful patios and decor. Staff is nice and friendly. Trash pickup isn’t offered and the walk to dumpster would be excessive for unfit or handicapped. We would stay again. Amenities are clean, as described and dog Park is immaculate but small.

    Lebanon-Cincinnati NE KOA

    Fantastic Place

This KOA sets the bar for the Ohio locations we have visited. The bathrooms are amazing and private. The tent site we had was huge and there were actually trees for our suspended tent and hammocks. The dog park wasn’t huge, but larger than most. The campground was completely full but still quiet and peaceful. The staff are amazing.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

Beautiful State Park close to Columbus Ohio

Alum Creek State Park is a beautiful park and great campground just outside the hustle and bustle of downtown Columbus and minutes away from attractions such as the Columbus Zoo.

The campground has good sized sites and is wooded throughout with clean bath houses, well maintained roads, and easy access for big rigs.

There is also a very nice dog park in the park including dog beaches with lake access for your pups to swim.

We love this campground and the beautiful lake and appreciate the easy access to local attractions, shopping, and more.

    Cowan Lake State Park Campground

    Large Campground

Autumn is the best time to camp in Ohio. Lots of small bathrooms. Lake access. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was due to the fact there was no quick reentry. Had to wait for rvs in front of me to register.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

Would be 5 star except for this

Alum Creek is just beautiful, nice sites, most of them are at least partially shaded, lots of woods, hiking trails, the lake, it is what I think of when I think of State Park campground camping in Ohio. There are a couple problems. 1. Only ONE little dump station. This is a big campground, so if you're leaving Sunday, you better get up at the crack of dawn to get to the station, otherwise be prepared to wait in a long long line of RV's. We by-passed the long line and stopped at a different State Park campground on the way home and paid 10.00 to use their dump station. 2. They never answer their phone at the campground office. I mean NEVER. If you have a question you will just have to deal with the reserveamerica people who really know nothing other than what they read on the campground website. So basically you know as much as they do. It's maddening. We will go back, but it's a 2 hour drive so it won't be anytime soon.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

great state park campground. There are some full hook ups but mostly just electric. They have pancake breakfast on Saturday mornings through summer and doughnuts on Sunday. Helpful camphost. There is a campground beach and boat launch. Lost of hiking paths in the campground and in the park area. A great dog park with lake entrance for the pups. tmThere is also some mountain bike trails. Plenty to do for everyone.

Guide to Springfield

Springfield's terrain features a mix of flatlands and gentle hills with elevations ranging from 900 to 1,050 feet above sea level. The area experiences four distinct seasons with summer temperatures averaging 85°F and winter lows around 20°F. Several campgrounds near Springfield offer accommodations for pets with specific designated areas and trail access points.

What to do

Hiking with pets: The area around John Bryan State Park Campground connects to Glen Helen Nature Preserve and Clifton Gorge, creating extensive trail networks. "John Bryant and Glen Helen nature preserve and Clifton Gorge are some of the best hiking trails in south west Ohio," notes camper Don B.

Water recreation: Caesar Creek State Park Campground features a reservoir with swimming and fishing options. One visitor mentions, "We had a good time at the beach and caught a few fish at a couple different fishing spots." The park includes boat launches and shoreline access points for various water activities.

Fossil hunting: Some parks issue permits for fossil collection, adding an educational component to camping trips. "We even got a permit to collect fossils. Great visitor centers too," shares Kenpocentaur K. about their experience at Caesar Creek, which has designated fossil collection areas with proper authorization.

What campers like

Secluded tent areas: Buck Creek State Park Campground offers quieter spaces for primitive camping. According to Amanda P., "Over a late-August weekend, we found the non-electric loop to be pretty quiet and uncrowded. The grounds are level and grassy, with trees that provide partial shade."

Family activities: Many campgrounds organize scheduled events, especially during holidays and summer weekends. At Kiser Lake State Park Campground, "They have activities throughout the day for kids on the weekends. Also have a nice camp store/marina with canoe and kayak rentals at a reasonable price," according to Andrew L.

Nearby attractions: The Springfield area contains unique points of interest within driving distance of campgrounds. Leon H. notes, "We visited the Ohio Caverns. The tour is worth the money, the 'gem' mining was fun for our younger kids... Yellow Springs is a great, funky town. Many great places to eat. Dark Star Used Bookstore is a must see every time we visit."

What you should know

Food storage concerns: Local wildlife can be problematic if proper storage protocols aren't followed. According to Nicole C., "The raccoons stole our hot dog buns we had sitting on the picnic table for literally 5 minutes while we cooked our hot dogs." Secure food containers are essential.

Seasonal occupancy patterns: Midweek stays often provide more privacy and space. "It was a little too busy for my liking on Friday night, but Wednesday and Thursday we basically had the loop to ourselves!" shares Nicole C. about Caesar Creek State Park Campground.

Motorized restrictions: Some lakes prohibit motorized watercraft. At Kiser Lake, "This park is known for the lake that is kayak and canoe friendly since it doesn't allow any kind of boat with a motor," explains Andrea F., making it ideal for quiet paddling with pets.

Tips for camping with families

Campground-specific beaches: Several parks offer swimming areas with varying amenities and conditions. "There are two swimming beaches, the public one and one in the campground. The campground one is smaller a short hike to get to it," explains Leon H. about Buck Creek State Park.

Biking opportunities: Flat terrain at many campgrounds makes them suitable for children learning to ride. At Jacoby Road Canoe Launch, "It isn't far from the bike trail so those who are more adventurous might look into how to connect the route for those that don't mind biking some on the road," notes Kenpocentaur K.

Holiday programming: Special events are common on summer holidays. Melissa M. shares, "Camp host on I think lot 71 or there about were great at keeping the activities going. Every night there was a movie and you could buy root beer floats for $1!! And the kids loved it."

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategies: For pet friendly camping near Springfield, Ohio, choosing the right location within campgrounds matters significantly. Lisa M. notes about Buck Creek, "This park was pretty packed over Labor Day weekend, but it still felt like it wasn't super crowded. Our space was nice and level."

Water pressure considerations: Some facilities experience utility fluctuations based on usage patterns. At smaller campgrounds, water pressure issues may occur during peak times, affecting shower temperatures and fill rates.

Access road conditions: Some campgrounds require navigating longer entrance roads. According to Lisa M., "It was a bit of a drive back into the campground, probably 3 1/2 miles" at Buck Creek State Park, which can be important for larger rigs planning arrival and departure times.
