    Salem-Lisbon Ohio KOA

    A Traditional KOA Experience

This was a Fall camping experience in a cabin as we knew it would be cold in the evenings.  We also had a non-camper with us so this was a nice compromise.  We had a cozy cabin with 2 bathrooms.  We also had a small kitchen where we could cook when we didn't want to cook over the fire.  This was another way for us to social distance as COVID-19 was still an issue.

I also took photos of the camping bathrooms as each KOA does it a little differently. You will notice that the bathroom is unisex.  It is a single bathroom (toilet and shower).  This is in the center of the campground.  The bathroom photos below are not of the cabin.

The cabin you see here is the Deluxe. "Deluxe Cabin(More than two Bathrooms), Patio Deluxe Cabin(w/ Bathroom)- Evergreen KL8-9-10 Perfect for large family or two couples with two queen bedrooms, sleeping loft, 1 1/2 baths, kitchenette, 3 tvs located in quiet corner with shade trees. Sorry, Not Pet Friendly! Linens are included in all seasons except Winter. Please bring pool towels." Taken from Reservation Email.

For 2 nights it totaled $153.00 which is a good price compared to other cabins we were looking at within the region.  We could have had others camping in the tent section of the campground so it is an easy way to have a mixed crowd for a camping outing.

I did type in some information into the Special Requests within my reservation booking online, as I had a question about who had to pick up the key as a friend lived closer.  No one responded and I had to call them.

Cabins Check in is at 3PM and Check out is at 12 PM

We were able to buy firewood from the KOA camp office. They bring it to your campsite and we were able to grill hotdogs and other food items on our camp fire.  Do read the general information closely and look at number 15 for a free scoop of ice cream.

https://www.whitehousefruitfarm.com/donuts  We did a donut run and explored the farm for our outing for the day.

We also spent the day checking out a local mill https://www.millcreekmetroparks.org/visit/places/mill-creek-park/lantermans-mill/

    West Branch State Park Campground

Well kept campground with access to beach and dock

Each campsite in on a leveled cement pad and comes with a fire ring a picnic table. There is plenty of room around your site and you don't feel crowded. Most sites offer nice tree coverage for shade. The restrooms and showers are very clean and well taken care of. There is also a laundry facility and sink outside each one for washing dishes and water fountains throughout the park. There is a nice beachfront for swimming and then a dock that be reached from outside the park. A beautiful lake for kayaking or boating. The store has most camping needs in it and once a week they host an ice cream social. Has a very nice playground and a sand volleyball court. There are some hiking trails, but nothing extensive.

    Roundup Lake RV Resort

Great Lively Place with lots of Amenities

Starting off, everyone from the employees to the other campers were super friendly! My boyfriend and I rented The Park Model Cabin which was sort of a half trailer with a full bathroom and full kitchen. The bed was the only detractor of our trip, as it was mostly springs. We brought our air mattress in for the second night and slept much better. The themed weekends throughout the season are fun and festive and there are a lot of activities to do and participate!

Sun Retreats Geneva on the Lake

It's Easy to Love this Campground

As newbies to all things RV, we needed a place in Ohio to break in our new travel trailer. Indian Creek is family and pet friendly with all the amenities and even a great lookout spot across the street where you can take in a Lake Erie sunset. We loved the clean bathrooms and appreciated the staff's effort to maintain services while encouraging social distancing. All of their COVID-19 policies were well spelled out online and in signage across the resort so that you knew what to expect. All of the staff wore masks and bathrooms were cleaned often. Some of their usual events and programs were unavailable but they offered craft kits for children to pick up and do at their own campsite in lieu of the usual program. We enjoyed their beautiful put-put course and ice cream stand. They did not allow outside visitors in the resort. The only thing that threw us off was that the bathhouses were closed at night and we didn't know that until we tried to use them. The resort is expanding and adding new sites. They are planting lots of trees (it looked like one at each site) so the resort should become more park-like and less parking lot as they grow. We really liked the back-in sites with water and electric hookups because they were larger and more private and wooded. The fire ring was so easy to cook on that now I'm spoiled! The camp store/gas station was convenient and well stocked with camping supplies. Golf carts are available to rent if you need them to navigate this huge park. We rode our bikes instead. There is a township park just down the road towards Geneva-on-the-Lake proper that we used to spend some leisure and exercise time near the lake. We look forward to visiting this RV resort again in the future!

    West Branch State Park Campground

    Wooded Waterside Sites

Make reservations! (6 months in advance).  Waterside sites fill up quickly! Check in is very easy as you pass the camp store on your way in. All campsites have a fire ring and picnic table.  West Branch has private, spacious, shady sites. We can launch our kayaks right from our campsite. The shower house and bathrooms are large and clean. There is even a book exchange shelf at the shower house in case of rainy days. The park office loans games and sports equipment to campers. Washers and dryers are also at the shower house. There is an outside sink to wash up dishes. Bring your boat or kayak. There are many inlets to explore or fish. There is a small beach at the campground but a larger one on the other side of the lake. There is a boat launch at the campground.  There are playgrounds for the children. An ice cream social is held on Saturday evenings that my children always love to attend. There is a newer dog park near the intersection of Rock Spring  and Esworthy roads. There are many scenic hiking trails at West Branch. Bridal trails are located on Esworthy Rd. West Branch is our favorite campground and we make sure to visit every year.

Jamestown Campground — Pymatuning State Park

great spot for direct kayak/canoe put in.

We stayed in site 218. this spot is in the smaller ( less crowded) part of Jamestown campground in Pymatuning SP. it is right on the water and has an easy access area for shore fishing and entering a kayak or canoe or some other water device. the site sits on a little bay and the otherside (more crowded) of the campground is across the water. the water is a little murky/ grassy but still good entry area. the campsite was spacious for a pa state park. the site is between the lake and the road. sites 212-222 look to be on the water with boat access, but 218 has the easiest entry. 220’s picnic Bench and fire pit sit next to the water with great views, but there is little shade. 218 had a great shady spot were you can hang 3 hammocks. there is no electricity at these sites and pretty much tent only. lots of tent space. the fire ring was decent but we moved it as it was right underneath a burnt tree. 218 was ADA accessible with a nice picnic table. restrooms were fairly close. clean... outdated, but clean.

Jamestown Campground — Pymatuning State Park

    Another trip to Jamestown Campground

My family has visited Pymatuning park many times now and try have used a variety of spots at Jamestown campground. It is large, offering multiple options for campsite types. It’s a standard PA state park campground offering bathrooms (bathrooms are older, but are being renovated July-August 2021) showers, fire ring, picnic table, etc. Campsites J-106 thru J-116 are well shaded, but are alongside route 322 which maintains consistent traffic at all hours. If the noise is not an issue, this run of tent sites are well spaced, and offer easy access to the facilities. To be away from the road (and nearer to the lake) sites J-120 thru J-128 are closer together but can be quieter (depending on your neighbors…)

The beach area is clean, and raked often. It has a playground and volleyball court. On Friday’s they have a family movie night at the amphitheater. Most Saturdays in the summer they offer crafts and activities for kids at the beach.

The surrounding area also has plenty of activities to offer: Local restaurants, ice cream, hiking, kayaking/boating, fishing, etc.

    Mosquito Lake State Park Campground

    Great State Park Campground

We just got back from our first trip to Mosquito Lake State Park Campground. All in all, it was a great experience.

We stayed in site 67, which is a waterfront site, with electric. The water is about 25 yards from the pad, but is visible from the entire site. The site was spacious, but not as private as some of the others. There is some woods between this site and the sites on either side, but other sites are visible. The fire pits and picnic tables were staggered, so it created some distance to make it feel more private.

The campground as a whole, was very quiet. We stayed from Wednesday to Friday. The group next to us seemed a little rowdy when we first pulled in, but by 10:00 there was no noise anywhere near us.

Most sites seemed pretty level from side to side, but where we were, several had a slope from front to back. Away from the waterfront, most sites looked pretty level. The amount of space between sites varied from site to site. Some sites had woods on both sides, while others were pretty open. Some had nice large grassy areas, others were much smaller. Sites from 214-224 are in a cul de sac and are water front, but they were pretty close together with very little privacy between sites, if any. They are very close to the water though.

There are bathrooms and water scatter about, but from what I saw there was only 1 shower house.

Wal-mart and other shopping and restaurants were about 3 miles away. Park was easy to get to, only one turn for us off the highway. Lake was great for kayaking and paddleboarding. Very nice dog park in a different part of the park. There is a boat launch accessible from inside the campground.

Dump station has 2 lanes which was nice when checking out. Fresh water fill up was also located near the dump station.

    Cabins could be better

The bunk beds have very thin rv style bunk bed mattresses. And the master bed mattress was a weak memory foam. Needs to invest in better mattresses.

Guide to Solon

Cabin rentals near Solon, Ohio are typically found in campgrounds within a 30-minute drive. This northeast Ohio region features rolling hills and heavily wooded areas with elevations ranging from 800-1,200 feet. Many cabin accommodations remain open beyond summer, with several parks offering year-round cabin options for visitors exploring nearby Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

What to do

Explore hiking trails: West Branch State Park Campground features multiple hiking paths through wooded areas near the water. "There are many scenic hiking trails at West Branch. We also took the inflatable kayaks out on the lake twice and it was so smooth and clear," shares one visitor who stayed at site 190.

Fish from your campsite: At Woodside Lake Park, waterfront cabin sites offer direct fishing access. "There's fishing and much more. I will continue to keep bringing my family out to this campground," notes a recent visitor. The park maintains stocked fishing areas suitable for beginners and experienced anglers.

Visit nearby attractions: Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA serves as a convenient base for exploring Cleveland and natural areas. "We stopped here for a couple nights to go to a Cleveland Guardians game and go to Cuyahoga National Park. It was within great proximity to both," explains Jennifer H. The campground is approximately 25 miles from downtown Cleveland.

Wildlife viewing: Wildlife observation opportunities abound at Countryside Campground where a nature path connects to Mogadore Reservoir. "A nice short walk takes you to Mogadore reservoir," notes a camper. Early mornings offer the best wildlife viewing when deer and waterfowl are most active.

What campers like

Private cabin settings: Penitentiary Glen Reservation Campsite offers secluded cabin options. "It's like you have the forest to yourselves out here," reports Jillian E. The more isolated settings require additional walking but provide a quieter experience than roadside cabins.

Clean facilities: Countryside Campground maintains well-kept bathrooms and common areas. "This is easily one of the most beautiful and well kept campgrounds we've stayed at. The bathrooms were clean, the showers were nice," comments Kathryn P. Rental cabins receive similar attention with regular cleaning between guests.

Lake views: Woodside Lake Park features cabins with water views. "The lake they have water sports games kayaking a paddle bike they do provide lifejackets if you do the water sport games," mentions a reviewer. Cabin placement varies, with premium units typically situated closer to water features.

Convenient location: West Branch State Park Campground provides easy access to northeast Ohio attractions. "This state park was very welcome after our first two unlucky Ohio state park experiences. We had no trouble pulling in at 3 pm on a Sunday after Labor Day with no reservations and snagging a very nice spot (Site 50 backs up to Kirwan Reservoir)," shares Lee D. The park sits approximately 25 miles from Solon.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Cabin rentals near Solon require advance planning. "Make reservations! (6 months in advance). Waterside sites fill up quickly!" advises Alisa G. about West Branch State Park. Holiday weekends book furthest in advance, especially for premium cabin locations.

Water quality issues: Some cabin rentals have water quality challenges. At Woodside Lake Park, one guest reported, "I left after 2 months due to iron & sulfur laden well water that is provided in at least half the park. I spent hundreds of dollars trying to filter and clean up the water to no avail." Bringing bottled water for drinking is advised.

Cabin types vary significantly: Roundup Lake RV Resort offers multiple cabin styles. One guest explained, "My boyfriend and I rented The Park Model Cabin which was sort of a half trailer with a full bathroom and full kitchen." Comfort levels and amenities differ greatly between basic and deluxe cabins.

Seasonal considerations: Amenities availability changes with seasons. "We arrived mid-September 2020, so Covid has had its impact and it's past Labor Day so pools/lakes are likely closed to swimming most years anyway," notes a Roundup Lake visitor. Most water recreation closes after Labor Day regardless of weather.

Tips for camping with families

Recreational options: Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA provides extensive family activities. "Swimming (wish it were open a little later…) laundry 24/7, a game room, store with just what we needed to pick up a few things, a pond that seemed to always have someone fishing at it," explains Jennifer H. The property offers structured weekend activities for children during peak season.

Playground access: Countryside Campground includes play areas near cabin sections. "Playground was a hit for our 8yr and under kids," shares Joe F. Most family-oriented campgrounds position play equipment within sight of cabin areas for easier supervision.

Wildlife encounters: Findley State Park Campground offers wildlife viewing opportunities for children. "Every night we were visited by raccoons, they stole our trash on the first night but the other nights we kept everything out of their reach," reports a camper at a nearby property. Secure food storage is essential when staying in cabins without full door seals.

Cabin capacity limitations: Most standard cabins accommodate 4-6 people maximum. "Sites are close but shady and large enough for trailer and our truck," notes a reviewer about standard sites, with cabins having similar space limitations. Larger families should confirm sleeping arrangements before booking.

Tips from RVers

Cabin alternatives: RV campers recommend cabins for non-RV-owning friends. "This spot was convenient and a great location to do a little sightseeing. Sites were gravel and level. We enjoyed full hookups," reports Sharon J. about Streetsboro KOA, noting cabins offer a comparable experience for those without RVs.

Storage considerations: Cabin rentals provide limited storage compared to RVs. "The cabin was sort of a half trailer with a full bathroom and full kitchen," explains Evangelyne D. about Roundup Lake accommodations. Unlike RVs with built-in storage compartments, cabin renters should pack efficiently with minimal bulky items.

Off-season availability: Cabins often remain available when RV sites close. "Only an overnight stop during a bigger trip but it seemed nice. They were accommodating to our late arrival and left a map and gate key at the office for the late arrivers," notes Scott C. about Streetsboro KOA's flexibility, which extends to their cabin rentals during shoulder seasons.
