    Salem-Lisbon Ohio KOA

    A Traditional KOA Experience

This was a Fall camping experience in a cabin as we knew it would be cold in the evenings.  We also had a non-camper with us so this was a nice compromise.  We had a cozy cabin with 2 bathrooms.  We also had a small kitchen where we could cook when we didn't want to cook over the fire.  This was another way for us to social distance as COVID-19 was still an issue.

I also took photos of the camping bathrooms as each KOA does it a little differently. You will notice that the bathroom is unisex.  It is a single bathroom (toilet and shower).  This is in the center of the campground.  The bathroom photos below are not of the cabin.

The cabin you see here is the Deluxe. "Deluxe Cabin(More than two Bathrooms), Patio Deluxe Cabin(w/ Bathroom)- Evergreen KL8-9-10 Perfect for large family or two couples with two queen bedrooms, sleeping loft, 1 1/2 baths, kitchenette, 3 tvs located in quiet corner with shade trees. Sorry, Not Pet Friendly! Linens are included in all seasons except Winter. Please bring pool towels." Taken from Reservation Email.

For 2 nights it totaled $153.00 which is a good price compared to other cabins we were looking at within the region.  We could have had others camping in the tent section of the campground so it is an easy way to have a mixed crowd for a camping outing.

I did type in some information into the Special Requests within my reservation booking online, as I had a question about who had to pick up the key as a friend lived closer.  No one responded and I had to call them.

Cabins Check in is at 3PM and Check out is at 12 PM

We were able to buy firewood from the KOA camp office. They bring it to your campsite and we were able to grill hotdogs and other food items on our camp fire.  Do read the general information closely and look at number 15 for a free scoop of ice cream.

https://www.whitehousefruitfarm.com/donuts  We did a donut run and explored the farm for our outing for the day.

We also spent the day checking out a local mill https://www.millcreekmetroparks.org/visit/places/mill-creek-park/lantermans-mill/

    West Branch State Park Campground

Well kept campground with access to beach and dock

Each campsite in on a leveled cement pad and comes with a fire ring a picnic table. There is plenty of room around your site and you don't feel crowded. Most sites offer nice tree coverage for shade. The restrooms and showers are very clean and well taken care of. There is also a laundry facility and sink outside each one for washing dishes and water fountains throughout the park. There is a nice beachfront for swimming and then a dock that be reached from outside the park. A beautiful lake for kayaking or boating. The store has most camping needs in it and once a week they host an ice cream social. Has a very nice playground and a sand volleyball court. There are some hiking trails, but nothing extensive.

    Roundup Lake RV Resort

Great Lively Place with lots of Amenities

Starting off, everyone from the employees to the other campers were super friendly! My boyfriend and I rented The Park Model Cabin which was sort of a half trailer with a full bathroom and full kitchen. The bed was the only detractor of our trip, as it was mostly springs. We brought our air mattress in for the second night and slept much better. The themed weekends throughout the season are fun and festive and there are a lot of activities to do and participate!

    West Branch State Park Campground

    Wooded Waterside Sites

Make reservations! (6 months in advance).  Waterside sites fill up quickly! Check in is very easy as you pass the camp store on your way in. All campsites have a fire ring and picnic table.  West Branch has private, spacious, shady sites. We can launch our kayaks right from our campsite. The shower house and bathrooms are large and clean. There is even a book exchange shelf at the shower house in case of rainy days. The park office loans games and sports equipment to campers. Washers and dryers are also at the shower house. There is an outside sink to wash up dishes. Bring your boat or kayak. There are many inlets to explore or fish. There is a small beach at the campground but a larger one on the other side of the lake. There is a boat launch at the campground.  There are playgrounds for the children. An ice cream social is held on Saturday evenings that my children always love to attend. There is a newer dog park near the intersection of Rock Spring  and Esworthy roads. There are many scenic hiking trails at West Branch. Bridal trails are located on Esworthy Rd. West Branch is our favorite campground and we make sure to visit every year.

    Tomlinson Run State Park Campground

    Very wooded campground

General: 50-site (all but six with electric hookups) campground plus two yurts and three cabins. Two sites are handicap accessible.

Site Quality: The sites have gravel pads (except the handicap-accessible ones which were paved). The sites were completely covered with leaves when we were there which made it challenging to determine where the actual (narrow) pad was. Sites appeared to be level. A fire ring and wooden picnic table complete the site.

Bathhouse: A little dated but clean. Two of the stall doors did not latch properly. Didn't use the shower so cannot comment but there was a sign indicating it took a while for the water to warm up.

Activities/Amenities: There is a small camper store, laundry, and a playground. In season, there is lake swimming and a boat dock. There is a fishing area, mini-golf and disc golf, and several short hiking trails. Unfortunately, since we arrived late afternoon and had to depart early the following day (and were camping off-season), we could not take advantage of any of these things. What we lose in activities, we gain in a quieter camping experience with fewer crowds, which is generally preferable for us!

    Atwood Lake Park Campground

    Incredible!

The Atwood Lake Campground is a true gem in a beautiful area of eastern Ohio! We’ve visited the Atwood region many times in the past but have never camped - but after this visit we’ll be back for sure. The campground is relatively new, with the campground area being completely revamped beginning in 2017. There are two overnight camping areas with seasonal sites in a separate section; we stayed in “Camp H” which is the newest area. There is a huge bathhouse with two sets of men’s and women’s restrooms and shower facilities along with a very nice laundry area. Adjoining the bathhouse area is a beautiful pavilion and children’s playground - all of which overlooks Atwood Lake. The campsites are nicely spaced though if you’re in the inner loop as we were or even some of the outer ring sites you’ll be looking right into your neighbor’s site. All sites are FHU on level concrete pads and include a metal picnic table and fire ring. If needed there are two very well equipped dump stations if you prefer to use them instead of the sewer connection at your site. Many sites are on cul de sacs directly on the lake with docks and fishing areas adjacent to the campsites. Lots of hiking trails, paved bike paths, a swimming beach and restaurant are in a nearby area. We loved the campground and will return soon!

    Mosquito Lake State Park Campground

    Great State Park Campground

We just got back from our first trip to Mosquito Lake State Park Campground. All in all, it was a great experience.

We stayed in site 67, which is a waterfront site, with electric. The water is about 25 yards from the pad, but is visible from the entire site. The site was spacious, but not as private as some of the others. There is some woods between this site and the sites on either side, but other sites are visible. The fire pits and picnic tables were staggered, so it created some distance to make it feel more private.

The campground as a whole, was very quiet. We stayed from Wednesday to Friday. The group next to us seemed a little rowdy when we first pulled in, but by 10:00 there was no noise anywhere near us.

Most sites seemed pretty level from side to side, but where we were, several had a slope from front to back. Away from the waterfront, most sites looked pretty level. The amount of space between sites varied from site to site. Some sites had woods on both sides, while others were pretty open. Some had nice large grassy areas, others were much smaller. Sites from 214-224 are in a cul de sac and are water front, but they were pretty close together with very little privacy between sites, if any. They are very close to the water though.

There are bathrooms and water scatter about, but from what I saw there was only 1 shower house.

Wal-mart and other shopping and restaurants were about 3 miles away. Park was easy to get to, only one turn for us off the highway. Lake was great for kayaking and paddleboarding. Very nice dog park in a different part of the park. There is a boat launch accessible from inside the campground.

Dump station has 2 lanes which was nice when checking out. Fresh water fill up was also located near the dump station.

    Tomlinson Run State Park Campground

    Camping in the trees

Electric Site 37 - pad is pretty level, plenty for our small camper and truck, on a slight hill to get to fire ring but lots of space to spread out. You could tent but not really a flat spot. We were near the non-electric cul de sac and a neighbor right across but not on top of each other. Trees are everywhere and wonderful during the fall season. We had a big night of rain and with the wind it dried up pretty quickly.

Camp store - small, not a lot in it but may be end of the season items only. Mostly shirts and mugs and very little snack food. The camp store staff were all very friendly and helpful and the store has limited WiFi if you stood in the right spot. There is a laundry room available there as well.

Dump station- 2 way and potable water on the other side of it. The only place to drop your trash too.

Trails - lots of trails to choose from. Some were pretty easy some were a little hilly. My favorite was the fern trail - lots of ferns and a very pretty stream. Hiking poles are recommended especially if it rains.

Playground - is available for kids and a huge shelter house too.

Firewood is $6 a bundle and burns well, no slab cut.

Water - have to go up to entrance as the water spouts are still shut off.

Showers - in womens the shower on the left never got warm, other two were fine. There are 4 flush toilets.

    Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™- Akron/Canton

    Cabins could be better

The bunk beds have very thin rv style bunk bed mattresses. And the master bed mattress was a weak memory foam. Needs to invest in better mattresses.

Most area cabins sit between 1,000-1,200 feet elevation, where summer temperatures typically reach 70-85°F during peak season. Winter cabin stays often require additional preparation with temperatures frequently dropping below freezing from December through February.

What to do

Water activities at West Branch State Park: The park offers extensive lake access with opportunities for kayaking, swimming, and fishing. "We took the inflatable kayaks out on the lake twice and it was so smooth and clear," notes Andrea F. at West Branch State Park Campground.

Mini golf for families: Several campgrounds feature on-site mini golf courses for all ages. "This campground has a really nice mini golf course! It's free for campers but the public can come and pay to play," reports Dawn R. about her stay at Jellystone.

Horseback riding experiences: Visitors can enjoy guided horseback rides at select locations. "Took the kids on the horse ride and they loved it. All staff were very friendly," shares Bradley B. from Canton / East Sparta KOA Holiday - Bear Creek Ranch.

What campers like

Private waterfront sites: Many campers appreciate lakefront accommodations with direct water access. "Lakefront living. We're at site 160. No electricity, no hookups, but a HUGE lakefront site. Beach is right next door too!" shares Rino S. from West Branch State Park Campground.

Clean shower facilities: Modern bathhouses receive positive feedback at most locations. "Very clean bathrooms! Beautiful sites with lake views. I love this campground. Nice people and very clean!" mentions Teresa B. about West Branch State Park.

On-site food options: Several campgrounds offer food services beyond standard camp stores. "We only tried the nachos from the food counter. However, we had daily ice cream! The ice cream flavors were unique and DELICIOUS," writes Dawn R. about Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™- Akron/Canton.

Large tent sites: Tent campers appreciate spacious dedicated areas. "The 9 tent sites are very large and spacious. It is mostly an established RV Park," reports Tommy K. from his stay at Countryside Campground.

What you should know

Reservation timing matters: Popular cabins book quickly, especially during summer months. "Make reservations! (6 months in advance). Waterside sites fill up quickly!" advises Alisa G. about camping at West Branch State Park.

Water quality varies: Some locations have mineral-heavy water systems. "The water smelled horrible, and both the shower head and faucet were caked with scum. My kids begged not to have to take a shower because of the smell," notes Hali R. about her cabin stay at Clay's Resort.

Site leveling challenges: Several campgrounds have sloping sites requiring additional equipment. "We were only off 2 inches side to side but front to back we had to lower the front 15 inches," explains Andrea F. about site conditions at Atwood Lake Park Campground.

Varying pet policies: Rules for pets differ between cabins and campgrounds. "It is pet friendly," notes Kathryn P. about Countryside Campground, though some locations restrict pets from certain cabin types.

Tips for camping with families

Activity planning: Campgrounds offer scheduled family activities throughout the day. "Jellystone Akron-Canton was a nice place. My mom wanted to go there because she thought the kids would like it more with all the activities," shares Dawn R.

Playground options: Look for campgrounds with multiple play areas. "KOA Bath house trailer was very clean, easy to utilize the outdoor kitchen," mentions Heidi C. about Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA.

Beach access considerations: Some campgrounds have private beaches for guests. "There is a small beach at the campground but a larger one on the other side of the lake," explains Alisa G. about West Branch State Park's swimming options.

Kid-friendly cabin layouts: Cabins with bunk beds accommodate families with children. "Perfect for large family or two couples with two queen bedrooms, sleeping loft, 1 1/2 baths, kitchenette, 3 TVs located in quiet corner with shade trees," describes Kenpocentaur K. about deluxe cabins at Salem-Lisbon KOA.

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategies: RVers recommend checking site dimensions and accessibility before booking. "If you're staying at this park for just the weekend or stopping by, ensure to get a space numbered under 100. All the 100+ spots are actually across a busy residential street," advises Never Sitting S. about Jellystone Park.

Hookup variations: Hookups and amenities vary significantly between sites. "We had no trouble pulling in at 3 pm on a Sunday after Labor Day with no reservations and snagging a very nice spot," reports Lee D. about their spontaneous stay at West Branch.

Access for large rigs: Some locations have challenging entrances for bigger RVs. "We have a 41 foot class A and we were centimeters from dragging our bumper crossing the road to park," cautions Never Sitting S. from their experience at Jellystone Park.
