What to do
Hiking accessible trails: At Pike Lake State Park Campground, visitors can explore multiple paths suitable for various skill levels. "The trails here are easy and short. I loved the informational boxes and tags that they had on the trees or plants. This is helpful if you have little ones with you or if you are like me and just like to learn about the animals/plants on the trail," notes one camper.
Disc golf: Several parks near Hillsboro have established disc golf courses. "The park was very nice and well stocked. They did have a mini golf course and a few holes of disk golf," reports a visitor to Rocky Fork State Park.
Water activities: Morgan's Canoe and Outdoor Adventure provides river experiences at multiple difficulty levels. "They provide canoeing, rafting, and kayaking at different trip lengths for a great price. There are plenty of spots along the beautiful Little Miami River Valley to pull your canoe off to the side and sit and hang out," explains a regular visitor.
What campers like
Cabin placement: Cowan Lake State Park Campground cabins offer strategic positions near water. "They also have a porch that is screened in with a view of the lake. You are not able to walk down to the lake from the cabin but it is a lovely view," explains a visitor who stayed in one of their cabins.
Campsite spacing: Some areas provide more separation between sites than others. At Stonelick State Park Campground, "Nice big sites, fairly level. We camped at site 35 and it was very slopey, our levelers only helped a little. First night the shower house stunk but then the next day it smelled fine while our closest bathrooms were out of order."
Year-round options: While many campgrounds close seasonally, Sandy Springs Campground remains open throughout winter. "We spent about five months there this past winter. The campground is beautiful and the owners are amazing. The bathrooms and laundry room are very clean," reports a long-term visitor.
What you should know
Shower availability: Facilities vary significantly between campgrounds. At Pike Lake, "They have 79 sites plus a group site and they only have 4 flush toilets and 1 pit toilet to service all of them. None of the sites were full hook up so everyone had to use the four bathrooms."
Cabin amenities: Long's Retreat Family Resort focuses on family-friendly accommodations. "Coffee k cups were provided in a few different varieties as well as sugar and creamer packs," notes a recent guest about cabin supplies.
Accessibility issues: Some cabins have challenging terrain or limited adaptations. "Campsites were clean. Shower houses and bathrooms kept very clean and nice. Great place to camp with children. Tons of things for them to do. Beach was clean and lake nice to swim and play in," reports a visitor to Rocky Fork State Park.
Cell service: Coverage varies dramatically across locations. At Long's Retreat, multiple visitors mentioned "no cell service at all which is good and bad." This affects navigation and emergency communications.
Tips for camping with families
Water play options: Olive Branch Campground offers multiple water recreation choices. "There is a nice walking trail through the woods, a small pool, playground, and a pond for fishing. Even though we were there over the 4'th of July weekend, it was very calm and the other campers were very respectful."
Proximity to attractions: Consider lodging options that reduce driving time to destinations. "A winter camping gem! Heated bathroom with showers are available for winter campers at Paint Creek State Park. An excellent disc golf course, hiking and beautiful lake views. Just past the town of Bainbridge, Ohio is Seip Mound to explore and hike the trails."
Playground locations: At Rocky Fork, "There are two playgrounds, one in the campground and one right across the way. There is a small pond/lake that has a beach you can kayak or canoe and fish (renting them is an option)."
Tips from RVers
Site leveling: At Stonelick State Park, RVers report varied experiences with site slopes. "There are a number of good sites, but some with a significant slope that leveling would be an issue. There are a few sites close to the water but are more compact."
Utility hookup locations: Check placement specifications before arrival. At Olive Branch Campground, "All hookups are in the middle of the site my standard cord was not long enough. Water pressure very good, wifi but they want no streaming. 50 amp service was adequate."
Weather drainage considerations: Some areas handle precipitation better than others. "It rained the first day we were there and people were literally bailing their sites out with buckets. The places that weren't flooded were very muddy," reported a visitor to Pike Lake State Park.
