What to do
Fishing opportunities: Clendening Lake offers excellent fishing in a quieter setting with motor restrictions. Water recreation: Atwood Lake provides multiple water-based activities beyond standard swimming. "Nice to see sailboats on the lake. All new camping spots with full hookup. Grass is coming in nicely. Kids love the playgrounds and being able to bike or scoot all around. Great fishing," according to a camper at Atwood Lake Park Campground.
Hiking trails: Salt Fork State Park features extensive trail networks suitable for different skill levels. "This park is very well groomed and most of the trails within the park had been cleared of vegetation so there was no fighting through the weeds. There are a number of good hikes within the park," reports a visitor who stayed at the park during Columbus Day weekend.
What campers like
Seasonal variations: Salt Fork State Park cabins offer year-round options with different experiences each season. "The change of season brings a very different atmosphere to the park and the people staying in it. The facilities are still well maintained and the washer and dryer I'm pretty sure are older then me but they do the job," mentions one camper at Salt Fork State Park Campground.
Lake access: Waterfront cabin locations provide direct water views and easy boat access. A visitor to Piedmont Lake notes, "Piedmont lake campground is one of the nicest, most convenient, and cleanest campgrounds. This is going to a lot of recent updates including: nicely poured pads for all the campsites, clean and updated restrooms, and some additional cabins that are available for rent. All you have to do is write up, and you're ready to enjoy the lake!"
Cabin amenities: Woods Tall Timber Resort provides extensive facilities beyond basic cabin rentals. "Wood's Tall Timber Resort is a campground like no other. We have never experienced so much fun all in one place, from the clean swimming lake, to ziplining, to rv camping, and well kept bath houses," shares a regular visitor at Woods Tall Timber Resort.
What you should know
Cabin availability: Reservations often need to be made well in advance, especially for specific locations. "Booked 2 sites online using website. Upon getting to our sites the numbers listed on the site posts did not match the numbers on the site map used for booking. Section 4. Seasonal campers verified the campground constantly changes site numbers around," warns a camper from Tappan Lake Park.
Connectivity limitations: Cell service varies significantly between cabin locations. At Austin Lake, "No phone service at all, no matter the carrier. Be advised it will seem a little sketchy getting in. The road dead-ends into the campground and it is all downhill getting there," advises a visitor at Austin Lake RV Park & Cabins.
Facility maintenance: Cabin and bathroom facilities vary in age and condition. "The park is well cared for but is showing its age. I noticed online that Ohio had set aside $88M for upgrades in 2016. It looks like they have not started yet," noted one camper describing Salt Fork State Park facilities.
Tips for camping with families
Swimming areas: Designated swim zones offer family-friendly water access. At Austin Lake, "They loved the lake and everything there was to do on it. Kayaks, paddle boards, jumps, slides. Name they had a blast!! I even enjoyed the overhead speaker announcements. Added an old time feel to the campground," shares an enthusiastic parent.
Children's activities: Multiple campgrounds provide organized activities for different age groups. "WTTR is our families favorite place to be during camping season in Ohio. It has everything you can imagine, it's safe and CLEAN! We couldn't recommend a resort more than this one," notes a returning family visitor to Woods Tall Timber Resort.
Playground access: Many cabin areas include nearby play structures. A visitor to Zion Retreat & RV Park comments, "The views are amazing! If you love peace and quiet this is the place for you. All sites are amongst the very tall trees. There are several ponds around the campground for fishing and bird watching."
Tips from RVers
Site dimensions: Check specific site measurements before booking cabin or RV spots. "We stayed in the 5-520-531 section. Sites are new, clean, full hookups, with plenty of paved surfaces to park. Camper sites are level and the hookups are new and easy to use," notes a Tappan Lake visitor about the newer section.
Seasonal considerations: Different cabin areas have varying availability throughout the year. "We stayed at Tappan Lake Park in Deersville Ohio. We reserved a spot in the new section 5 of the park. I haven't been to Tappan lake in probably 15 years with a RV. I have to say I was very happy with the facilities," shares a return visitor to the area.
Access challenges: Some cabin areas have difficult approach roads. Regarding Austin Lake, one RVer advises, "Be advised it will seem a little sketchy getting in. The road dead-ends into the campground and it is all downhill getting there. Take your time and all will be just fine. Our rig is 39' & 16K. 4wd low helps, not cause you need 4wd just for the lower gears."
