    Blue Water Campground

    Our stay at bluewater

The staff is extremely friendly, and try to accomadate with anything you could need. The campesites are fairly large with gravel pads. They offer water and electric hook-up for 30&50 amps. There is not a sewer hook up but they do offer a weekly pump out for a small fee and a dump station on the way out. The pool, ponds, playground and pavillion are all within walking distance from almost any site.

    Kiser Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet Park

This park is know for the lake that is kayak and canoe friendly since it doesn’t allow any kind of boat with a motor. It also features a beach , 2 playgrounds and several hiking trails. Just be careful if you hike with dogs since some trails intersect with a nature preserve which doesn’t allow pets.

The campground itself has 20 electric sites , 56 primitive sites and 4 camper cabins. All the electric sites are pull through and all sites have a fire pit but only the electric sites come with picnic tables.

Due to off season and COVID the camp store is closed and there is no camper host or park office staff around.

We did notice lots of downed trees on the poorly marked hiking trails. Some trails just started but no maps were around and no trails were blazed. It was hard to tell where we were headed or how long a trail was. I tried using the new Detour app and it wasn’t very accurate for this park.

We did have good Verizon cell coverage.

    Indian Lake State Park Campground

    Nice place but crowded area

This was our last camping trip of the year and it was cold. The campground was nearly empty so that was nice but the surrounding area was very crowded. There was nearly no area on the lake that didn’t have houses. The campground was clean and well maintained. There are sites that have access to get out on the water via a small canal. Some sites had good shade, and others had no shade. Overall it was a nice place, but the lake seemed very busy, even in cold weather.

    Wapakoneta KOA

    Nice little weekend getaway

Stayed 2 nights here. Had a back-in, water/electric spot that was roomy as we were on an end. Wood deck, picnic table, and fire ring included. Very well kept grounds, friendly staff, and all-around good atmosphere.

Venture Out Resorts Arrowhead Lakes Resort

    Big rigs to tents

We stayed here for free for 10 days as a part of a promotion that came with the purchase of our rig. Not sure about normal pricing though, as this campground is owned by Venture Out Resorts and they are a timeshare company (we had to sit for a hour long "pitch" to get our free days). They have 50amp, full hookup, pull through sites (and we saw 40+ ft rigs there) to tent camping to cabin rentals. The campground was clean (shower houses always looked great) and grounds were maintained. Amenities include an indoor pool, hot tub and sauna (close at 10p), but we did not partake because it was so overridden by children, chlorine, and no open windows - didn't seem worth any effort whatsoever in the July heat. The amenities we did checkout (close nightly at 8p) included their new 18 hole mini golf course, small arcade (4 games and pinball was broken 😢), loaner bikes, and water toys (we liked the paddle bikes). The company recently bought the property, so you can see what they inherited vs what it will probably eventually be like based off their sister properties (they recently added the putt putt and a big jungle gym) so it could evolve more as time passes. Regardless, in its current state as active 30 somethings, we were pretty bored. No hiking, significant highway noise, yes a couple big ponds, but a truck stop and truck storage is behind both - so no views. Most of the campers we saw were elderly or had young kids. I'd say if you fall into a category where you want to sit beside your rig all day or want your kids entertained (playgrounds, kids programming - it was luau week so they had a Moana movie night and other kid activities), go on and book a longer stay. If you're only looking for a spot to stay overnight by the highway, do it! It is simple to pull in and have full hookups to take advantage of but a 10 day stay is too long if you're paying. Other things to know: Walmart, Aldi, Lowes, and several automotive chain stores are at max 5 min away, which made grabbing some needed supplies super easy. That said truck stop above was very convenient to get into to fuel up our rig too. Fun fact: Neil Armstrong was born in Wapakoneta and the Armstrong Air & Space Museum is also a max 5 min drive away if you want to get your inner astronaut fix.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Grand Lake St. Marys State Park offers catch-and-release fishing throughout the campground pond. "The sunset last night was simply fabulous," notes Allison W. about her stay at Poor Farmer's Campground.

Swimming options: Despite lake water quality concerns, multiple campgrounds provide alternatives. "Nice swimming pool and clean pond that is stocked with bluegills," reports Shane M. about River Trail Campground II. The state park has "a pool, playground, putt putt golf, boat docks, hiking trails, and some other great amenities," according to Ashleigh D.

What campers like

Community atmosphere: Many campgrounds foster social environments. "Friendly patrons throughout the park. Clean saltwater pool, a park and a clean pond with a swimming beach. Catch and release fishing allowed. Bingo on Saturday evening!" shares Amy B. about her experience at River Trail Campground II.

Well-maintained grounds: Dayton KOA Holiday receives consistent praise for its upkeep. "Excellent rural setting. One of the nicer KOAs. Great staff and facilities. Mostly level sites. Grass, trees, and a pond all very well maintained," notes James P. The campground includes "a stream that runs through it" according to Melissa B.

Space and layout: Site size varies considerably between campgrounds. At Grand Lake St. Marys State Park, "The sites were pull through which was nice for having young kids. Could sit at our spot and watch our kids at the playground," shares Chad W. Meanwhile, Welcome Woods offers "a very large spacious area" at their sites.

What you should know

Tips for camping with families

Consider water recreation alternatives: With lake swimming sometimes restricted, look for campgrounds with pools. Stillwater Beach Campground has a pool, though one camper notes "POOL IS NEVER OPEN WHEN PEOPLE WHO WORK CAN USE IT DURING THE WEEK" and suggests they "DO BETTER AND HAVE EVENING HOURS ALSO."

Check for family programming: Some campgrounds organize regular activities. At Poor Farmer's Campground, "They usually have a lot of activities for the weekends planned," according to Vance M., who adds "A stream that runs through the campground is nice for the kids to play in when it's too hot for them on the play ground."

Tips from RVers

Site conditions vary: Many rv sites near Celina, Ohio have uneven terrain. "The site we were at had a very large spacious area. It was a grassy patch no actual pad to park but as we drove around there were plenty of areas that had gravel pads available," reports Ashley R. about Welcome Woods.

Hookup availability: Full-service RV spots are available at several campgrounds. At Love's RV Hookup-Bellefontaine, located about 30 miles from Celina, there are "A little loud at times. Hardee's restaurant is a different option for meals," according to Brad H.

Leveling requirements: Prepare equipment for uneven sites. At Poor Farmer's Campground, one camper describes it as "Very nice field rv camping. Well maintained and clean... I am pulling a 33 foot trailor and it was easy to park with 30 amp electric and water hookup," according to Gordon B.
