What campers like
Private sites: Maumee Bay State Park offers campsites with natural buffers between neighbors. One camper noted, "One of my favorite things about this campground is that your spots are close together which is great for safety, however with the bushes and brush, it feels super private. My grandparents were in the site next to me in their camper and I had to walk a ways to see their spot."
Easy island access: South Bass Island State Park provides unique lake views and cliff-side camping options. "Beautiful place, well kept, lots of sites overlooking the lake and a lot of shade. The island is pretty well known as a party island so we generally only camp here off-season now," explains a regular visitor.
Fishing opportunities: Multiple water access points at East Harbor State Park make fishing convenient. A camper shared, "I enjoy this campground because there are lots of great spots to choose from. I love the ability to walk or bike to the beach. I enjoy walking to the pond at night and flashlight frogs."
Wildlife viewing: Birdwatching opportunities abound at many sites with diverse habitats. One visitor to Maumee Bay noted, "Bird houses and feeders are located throughout the park and especially in the spring, you can hear many varieties of birds chirping."
What you should know
Seasonal challenges: Weather variations affect camping comfort throughout the year. One visitor to Maumee Bay State Park advised, "My only tip would be to bring plenty of bug spray in the summer, there are lots of bugs that come off the lake. Also make sure you bring jackets and blankets, even in the summer it can get pretty cool in the evening."
Site conditions: Some areas experience drainage issues after rainfall. A camper at Maumee Bay reported, "We stayed there in early May, we didn't have reservations so they had three sites open. We took the driest spot we could find. The ground was soft and marshy."
