Shawnee State Park Campground accepts pets at all 107 campsites, with amenities spanning from electric hookups to tent-only areas. Campers can choose between traditional drive-in sites and secluded walk-in tent sites accessible via short trails and stairs. Sites 1-6, 15, 18-21, 23-25, 28, 32, and 33 offer longer pads suitable for RVs, while sites like #12 provide wooded seclusion for tent campers willing to carry gear approximately 75 feet from parking. Sandy Springs Campground along the Ohio River also welcomes pets with full hookup options including water, electric, and sewer connections. Multiple bathhouses with showers are scattered throughout these properties, with clean, well-maintained facilities. The limited cell service at Shawnee requires preparation before arrival, as connection is spotty within the campground but slightly stronger near the lodge.
Hiking trails begin directly from Shawnee's campground near site #86, offering immediate access to dog-friendly exploration through the densely forested hills nicknamed the "Little Smokies of Ohio." The park's naturalist occasionally leads group activities including creek crawls and kayaking sessions that can accommodate various abilities and ages. Visitors should bring all necessary pet supplies as nearby towns have limited options, and firewood availability at campgrounds can be inconsistent. Turkey Creek Lake and Roosevelt Lake provide opportunities for dogs to cool off, though goose droppings have been noted at some beach areas. During Halloween weekends, Shawnee hosts site decorating contests and trick-or-treating events which temporarily close campground roads from 2-6 pm, requiring planning around these scheduled activities when camping with pets.

Very friendly people and my dog loved the dog park.
We stayed in Site 09. The sites are spacious with level, asphalted pads. Each site has a fire pit and picnic table.
Toward the front of the campground is a great splash pad, playground, and dog park, which includes an agility course. These are located away from the RV's; therefore, the campground was very quiet and peaceful.
Nearby was a marina, fishing access, and an archery range. The surrounding hills are pretty.
The bath house was clean. A laundry room was available.
The only drawback was the lack of shade. Because this place is relatively new, in time--as the planted seedlings grow--this problem will lessen.
Generous sized campsites, a lot of them are wooded which we prefer, with around 400 sites there are plenty to choose from! Bathroom/shower facilities are updated and usually well maintained. There is a large public beach but it's on the other side of the park so you have to drive all the way around to get to it, no short cuts. They have a camp ground beach but it's been closed the last 2 years. Lots of hiking trails, bridal trails and a bike path. Wish list for this park: Boat rental, dog park, dog beach/water access. Overall a beautiful park.
Just a beautiful park. Clean well maintained. Lots of amenities. Paddle boats, marina, 18 hole disc golf, bike park, huge dog park, store, archery range, playground and trails.
This is newly opened and a lot of work still needs to be done. Currently there is no dog park, hiking trails or bathhouses like it states. Many of the spots aren’t even finished yet.
When looking at the camp map don’t plan on having access to the creek or river. Your lucky if you can even view it.
The ground is all sand. So while if it rains you won’t get muddy, but the sand is a pain and gets everywhere.
This is the best campground we have stayed at. We have been here all summer and we’ve had no complaints. The owners are great people who are always here working and interacting with the campers. Splash pad, pavilion, playground, Gaga pit, and dog park are a few of the great amenities. Each lot has a fire pit and the lots are large. They do activities for the kids every weekend and also have bands! It’s a fun place.
KOA Review
The campground it’s self is very clean and taken care of. We were there in early March with winter temps. The staff was extremely nice and helpful, bath house and laundry was clean. The water at our site was inoperable and they offered to move us without me even having to ask which was nice. The site could be maintained better ours had lots of tire ruts and fire pit could have been better for the price. Overall it’s a good campground with amenities in great shape. A good little dog park that was extremely clean, putt putt, and more. I would come back again in the off season just cause we like camping with less crowds.
We are full-time RVers and this is by far the best park we've stayed at! It's peaceful and beautiful, everyone (especially Management) is so friendly and fun! The laundry facility is one of the greatest amenities as we've stayed other places without one, so we truly appreciate it! The splash pad is fantastic for children and adults alike! There's a dog park, and a kids kangaroo jump pad as well. The view of the river is beautiful! On weekends there's entertainment and/or cornhole tournaments to bring everyone together. The park is maintained perfectly and I've enjoyed calling it home! By far the best park in Southern Clermont County! Must see!
This was our first time camping here and it was a large park. There was several miles of bike trails , bridle trails and hiking trails. There is also a beach and marina for campers away from the main beach and marina for those just visiting the park for the day.
The nature center offered movies in the evening for guest.
The park was very clean and maintained. Trails were well marked and the camp hosts were very friendly.
We were there over Labor Day weekend and it was a quiet park except for the occasional golf cart late at night going by.
I did see a few dogs off leash which is always a pet peeve of mine.
Verizon cell coverage was good.
Camping options near Blue Creek, Ohio center around the southern edge of the Appalachian foothills where forested terrain creates sheltered valleys and elevated ridges. This area, situated between Shawnee State Forest and the Ohio River, ranges in elevation from about 500-1000 feet above sea level. Summer temperatures typically reach 85-90°F with high humidity, while spring and fall offer more moderate camping conditions with overnight temperatures dropping into the 40s-50s.
Explore local hiking trails: The region offers numerous trails ranging from beginner to advanced difficulty levels. At Carter Caves State Resort Park Campground, just across the Ohio River in Kentucky, trails lead to unique geological features. "Lots to do hiking, fishing, caves and caverns to explore," notes camper Ron & Bonnie D. The park's natural bridges and cave systems provide distinctive hiking destinations not found at many other regional parks.
Cool off in the water: Several campgrounds provide water access for swimming during hot summer months. Long's Retreat Family Resort offers a lake with water slides and a splash pad for younger children. According to camper Tammy B., "Lots for kid to do! The bathrooms, showers and camping sites are always well maintained and clean!" The water activities extend beyond basic swimming with floating docks and diving boards.
Try fishing from shore or boat: The Ohio River and smaller lakes provide varied fishing opportunities. At Sandy Springs Campground, the riverfront location offers access to watch river traffic and fish from shore. One camper observed, "It is so peaceful to watch the river and see the occasional boat or barge go by." Fish species in the area include bass, catfish, and panfish.
Riverfront camping sites: Sites along the Ohio River offer unique views and a peaceful atmosphere. At Sandy Springs Campground, camper Tiffani C. reports, "We just left and had a wonderful time! Campground is clean, seasonal campers are kind and the views are beautiful! We stayed in site 10 right on the river and the views were great." This location provides an alternative camping experience to the more forest-focused inland sites.
Clean, modern facilities: Several parks maintain well-kept bathhouses and other amenities that receive positive feedback. At Pike Lake State Park Campground, one camper noted the renovation efforts: "The campground has been recently renovated with newly paved roads & camp pads." Campground cleanliness ranks consistently high in importance for visitors to the area.
Cell phone disconnection: Many campgrounds in the region have limited connectivity, which some campers appreciate. According to Robin R. at Long's Retreat, "Love no cell reception! Quiet clean and staff (owner) is always pleasant and helpful!" This digital break allows visitors to focus on outdoor activities and social interaction.
Electrical hookup limitations: Some parks have unusual electrical arrangements that may require planning ahead. At Greenbo Lake State Resort Park, camper Karen P. discovered: "They advertise the sites with 30 and 50 amp hookups. What they didn't say was that you had to share a post. The people beside me already had the 50 amp. I pulled everything to run on propane that I could and plugged into the 30 amp."
Site selection matters: Not all sites are equally suitable for different camping styles. At Pike Lake State Park, one camper advised, "Some sites too small for our 20' trailer and truck." Similarly, at East Fork State Park, visitors noted that "certain sites are not recommended for tent camping as there would be no place to pitch a tent."
Weather considerations: The area's soil can become saturated during heavy rains. One camper at Pike Lake reported, "It rained quite a bit and many of the sites got flooded. The ground here doesn't drain well." This creates potential issues for tent campers especially, as standing water can quickly compromise camping comfort.
Playground proximity: Consider site location relative to play areas. At Shawnee State Park Campground, camper Shannon G. observed that "Site 57 - this site backs up to the ravine and is nice and large. It has a lot of shade and grass. We were able to run a line between trees for a dog run. Great neighbors on both sides but right across the site is the playground. It's a little noisy but if you have kids, it works."
Check seasonal activities: Many campgrounds offer scheduled events during peak seasons. Marc H. noted that Shawnee State Park "is geared towards families with kids, especially with RVs. It has all of the amenities: electric at most sites, water, flush toilets, showers, laundry. There's a small lake at the campground with a swimming beach and canoe rentals."
Pack all supplies: Limited shopping options exist near most area campgrounds. One camper recommends, "Not much nearby, so bring what you need. If you want to take a drive for a great hole in the way steak house try The Ribber. But go early 45 min wait at 4pm and it gets worse." Most campers suggest bringing food, pet supplies, and other necessities with you.
Site length verification: Check actual pad lengths when booking RV sites. At Shawnee State Park-Ohio River Campground, camper Kim H. noted, "The sites are spacious with level, asphalted pads." However, at the main Shawnee campground, another camper reported being told "the site we'd been assigned was room enough for 52'. Our RV is only 34' so that would be more than enough. we got there and it was maybe 20-24" in length."
Utility connections: Some sites require longer-than-standard hoses or cords. One camper at Carter Caves State Resort Park advised: "You will need extra water hose and extension cords to get hooked up in a lot of the sites though." This is particularly important for the pet friendly camping options near Blue Creek, Ohio, where keeping pets comfortable may require reliable hookups.
Campground layout navigation: Several campgrounds have confusing layouts that can be difficult to navigate with larger rigs. At East Fork State Park, a camper noted, "The State Park is on one side of the Lake and the Campground is on the other. There is no public road between the two." Printing campground maps before arrival can help with orientation.
