Best RV Parks & Resorts near Wingate, NC

Several RV parks surround Wingate, North Carolina, offering diverse options for motorhome travelers. Crown Cove RV Park in Fort Mill provides full hookups with 50-amp service and is big-rig friendly, though sites are positioned relatively close together. Elmore RV Park in Charlotte maintains a 4.5-star rating with full hookup sites that accommodate larger rigs, while Camp Henning at Ellerbe Springs offers a more intimate setting with just 14 RV sites featuring both 30-amp and 50-amp electrical connections. Cane Creek Park in Waxhaw operates year-round with water and electric hookups, sanitary dump station access, and spacious sites that can handle larger motorhomes. "Sites are close together, but not too terrible. Sites include fire ring with grate, table, lantern hook," noted one RV camper about the nearby Morrow Mountain State Park Campground, which provides electric hookups with both 30-amp and 50-amp service options.

Seasonal considerations affect RV camping availability throughout the region. Most parks remain open year-round, though advance reservations are strongly recommended, especially during fall foliage season when occupancy rates peak. Cell service varies significantly between locations, with stronger signals at parks closer to Charlotte and more limited connectivity at rural campgrounds. Pet policies differ between facilities - Glenwood Acres RV Park prohibits pets entirely, while most other parks welcome them with standard restrictions. Dump stations are available at Crown Cove, Cane Creek Park, and Wateree Lake RV Park & Marina, though not at all facilities. One traveler noted about Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort: "Beware of many tight small sites that slope front to back. These are the sites closest to the main office. The sites in the back are very level but seem to have a bunch of long term and are reserved for bigger rigs." Many parks offer propane refill services, and most feature gravel pads rather than concrete, occasionally requiring leveling blocks on uneven terrain.

Cheraw State Park Campground — Cheraw State Park

    Off season gem!

Didn’t have any expectations of this place since it’s in the middle of nowhere and not many photos. We loved it here. We were lucky enough to catch a great view of Jupiter merging with Saturn last night. Super cheap. We stayed four nights for under $100. 30/50 hookups and water. No sewer but very close dump station in campground. Primitive camping area for tents too. Pull through sites and back in. Spacious sites that feel nicely private surrounded by evergreens which is a nice relief in winter to see trees with leaves. The lake is beautiful. Awesome walking trail that takes you to the other side of the lake where there is a playground. Lots of swings and benches and picnic tables around. Barely anyone here in December, so it feels so nice to be out of our house but not needing masks constantly. When it isn’t off season they have cheap boat rentals. Firewood is $6.50 per bundle.

    Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort

    convenient to Carowinds, decent campground

Older campground lots of shade.  staff very friendly and helpful. We were really surprised with how much has been invested in Carowinds over the years by Cedar Fair that the campground has been untouched.  Bathrooms/bathhouses were very clean and seem to be the one part of the campground that has been updated.  One section of the campground has been turned into long term camping and many looked like they had been there for years.  campground was quiet other than noise from air traffic as airport is nearby but it was minor.   Campsites have decent space in between each other which is great bc the sites are small in length and you will be parking either beside the rig or sideways in front of it. We stayed in a back-in site and most back-in sites seemed rather level but pull throughs were hit or miss on that aspect.  If you are staying here to go to the park then it is very convenient and has an excellent shuttle that runs frequently and drops you off near the front gate.  Very small camp store that has most of the basics. Campground overall is clean, safe and secure but we expected a little more from theme park campground.  We live nearby and are pass holders at Carowinds so we will likely stay frequently due to the convenience.

    Morrow Mountain State Park Campground

Historical get away in the forest

The swaying of pine trees with the smell of the forest greets us at this easily accessible site in our motorhome. Electric and water hookups at our site, dump station available on the way out, camp host available. Picnic tables, fire pit available at our site. Lots of shade, plenty of trails that cover this State Park. The Kron house nearby, the swimming pool ( closed at time of our visit). The town of Albemarle 10 minutes away and Badin lake right down the mountain. Lots of history here just stop at the ranger station for information, maps and more.

    Crown Cove RV Park

    Keep Driving!

Subpar; seems to cater to long term residents. For the 3 pages of rules and regulations I was expecting a pristine campground; what we found was a half paved parking lot and our lot was on a hill side which made using our full hookups going up hill. No fire pit! Must provide ur own, rules state belongings must be 3ft away from away from neighboring sites which is almost impossible with how close sites are. Pass it up! Keep Driving! Would have given less than one star if possible

    Arrowhead Campground

    One of my faves!

Happy to report that there is a new host here as the one that was working in 2021 was AWFUL. Great sites but hardly any are level so be prepared to manage that. Nice fire pits and grills - love having both. Great bathhouse with hot showers. Terrific paved trail that is awesome for walking, biking, strollers, wheelchairs. Plenty of hammock trees! Zero noise except from other campers/vehicles and the occasional aircraft passing over. Cell signal is pretty spotty but passable. Would need a booster or satellite internet in order to work or attend school, though. Nearby El Dorado Outpost has everything you might need (gas, ice, hot food, small groceries, outdoor supplies, GREAT biscuits!!, etc) and locals sell firewood bundles for $4-5/each. 10-15 min drive into Troy where there are restaurants, gas stations, small regular grocery stores. Really nice new playground and skate park in Troy, too. Tons of hiking, offroading/overlanding, mountain biking, horseback riding nearby.

    Morrow Mountain State Park Campground

Family friendly, clean, quiet considering close proximity of neighbors

Very family friendly camp ground. Sites are close together, but not too terrible. Sites include tent pad, fire ring with grate, table, lantern hook. Facilities we're kept nicely, host was very helpful and makes rounds in the evenings with firewood ($5 bundle). Hiked the trail head near the campground, to the river.. lovely hike NO RIVER ACCESS FOR FISHING though... Embankment is too steep, we learned this after the 2.5 mile hike with the kids... Went down the road to the lake the next day (they have boat rentals, though we didn't get one).

    Badin Lake Campground

    A relaxing lakeside atmosphere

Uwharrie National Forest-Badin Lake Campground, New London, NC.

    https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/nfsnc/recarea/?recid=48934

    https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE\_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5368418.pdf

Campground Overview: 34 sites, two loops...upper loop and lakeside loop. Relatively large sites with vegetation that blocks constant view of neighbors.

Each site has a gravel parking pad and separate gravel tent pad, a standing charcoal grill, firepit with adjustable grate, a picnic table and a metal pole for hanging lanterns, etc. I would advise securing online reservations, but they do have an Iron Ranger to drop your payment in should you find an empty site. Note: There are warnings that online reservations take precedence, so if you use the Iron Ranger payment drop chute and someone reserved the same campsite...you will be required to move to a different location when the online reservation campers arrive. Just so you know.

    No electric.

Oddly, no firewood for sale...although scrounging produced plenty of things and fallen branches to keep a fire going.

I preferred the lower loop as nearly every outer site was on the lake with great views and lake access and sites are spread out. The inside sites of the lower loop are pretty spacious and deep. Water spigots were spaced out around the loop, so a short walk as we were equal distance between two.

Restroom/showerhouses were quad door buildings. Separate men’s and women’s restrooms and two separate shower rooms. Facilities were kept clean and stocked by resident hosts.

With Verizon, I never lost signal...a plus for a National Forest!

The upper loop appeared to offer a little more solitude than the lower lake loop...but no lake views.

The lake loop trail crosses the main campground roadway between the two loops. This trail is relatively flat and meanders around the lake and it’s many fingers...offering lovely lake views and some nice fishing locations.

During my midweek visit it was quiet day and night. The sunset across the lake was gorgeous and relaxing. Loud powerboat noise was minimal as only a couple bass boats thought it essential to travel at high speeds from location to location. Next visit my canoe and mountain one will accompany me.

What I enjoyed: as much as I dislike tree rats, I was entertained by two feuding squirrels that chased each other relentlessly and knocking each other out of tree tops. Woodpecker and Turkey wake up calls.

For a National Forest, I was surprised by the level of daytime industrial noise nearby.

Overall, a fantastic location relatively close to Raleigh/Durham and Fayetteville for a great camping getaway. I was only able to stay one night as the campground was booked, all reserved in advance. So plan ahead.

Military Park Shaw AFB Wateree Recreation Area and FamCamp

    Wateree Tent Camping

This was my family’s first time tent camping in the cold weather and it wasn’t that bad. The lakeside tent area provided beautiful scenery with access to restrooms and showers. It wasn’t too crowded as it was military members only and you can’t beat the price for a lakeside spot. We would definitely go tent camping here again!

Guide to Wingate

Wingate, North Carolina sits at approximately 600 feet above sea level in the Piedmont region with warm, humid summers and mild winters. Most campgrounds remain open year-round with peak season running from April through October. Winter temperatures rarely drop below freezing, making this area suitable for camping during all four seasons.

What to do

Hiking trails: Cane Creek Park offers multiple trail options for day hiking. "Beautiful place to camp, hike, and kayak! I take my two labs there almost every weekend for a good hike through the woods and they LOVE IT! A few of the trails are right on the lake and the dogs love to hop in and cool off," notes one regular visitor.

Canoe and kayak rentals: Wateree Lake RV Park & Marina provides boat access to Lake Wateree. "This location has 2 RV lots. Riverside is heavily wooded which provides a ton of shade on the hot summer days. Taylor Creek is newer with less trees providing lots of open space and great for Solar regeneration," explains a camper who visited recently.

Historical exhibits: Andrew Jackson State Park Campground offers educational opportunities with a museum and historic schoolhouse. "Took a walk on the nature trail and it was a nice, short hike and then we looked at the museum and schoolhouse," reports one visitor who enjoyed the cultural aspects of the park.

What campers like

Free mini-golf: Cane Creek Park includes unexpected amenities at no extra cost. "The mini golf is free and a blast. The swim area is only open on Saturdays or you can drive to the day use side and be over there," mentions a camper who stayed for a week.

Security features: Wateree Lake RV Park & Marina maintains controlled access for visitor safety. "They have a security gate to keep passers by out. They have a nice deck near the boat ramp and have a little bar in the office," notes a camper who found the park better than expected.

New bathhouse facilities: Morrow Mountain State Park Campground has updated restroom facilities. "I campground as well kept and clean. The bathhouse is brand new. The camp host was very helpful and checked on everybody, every day," reports a recent visitor in December 2024.

What you should know

Site leveling challenges: Many rv parks near Wingate, North Carolina have uneven terrain. At Andrew Jackson State Park, "Our site was very steep, so took a lot to get level, but it was ok. The rangers were very nice and helpful," explains one RVer who stayed at a lakeside site.

Varying WiFi quality: Internet connectivity differs significantly between campgrounds. "The wifi was great," reports a visitor to Wateree Lake RV Park & Marina, while Morrow Mountain campers note "The only drawback was that there was no Wi-Fi."

Noise considerations: Ebenezer Park Campground and others have varied noise levels depending on site location. "The only downside is that you could hear the traffic at the campsites," notes a visitor to Andrew Jackson State Park, while other parks report quiet conditions away from main roads.

Alcohol policies: Rules vary between campgrounds. Cane Creek Park prohibits alcohol consumption ("No alcohol permitted"), while Ebenezer Park and Crown Cove RV Park allow it, according to their features lists.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature dedicated play areas. Andrew Jackson State Park "has a wonderful playground" according to a local visitor who frequently used the park.

Holiday activities: Camp Henning at Ellerbe Springs and other parks offer special programming during peak times. At Cane Creek Park, "Holidays usually have some activities for kids," reports a repeat visitor who notes they "have been here 3 times all for a week at a time and love it."

Swimming options: Most lakes in the region offer swimming areas with limited schedules. Cane Creek Park's "swim area is only open on Saturdays" according to visitor reports, while Morrow Mountain State Park has "a swimming pool that is open after Memorial Day."

Wildlife viewing opportunities: The natural areas support diverse animal sightings. At Morrow Mountain, visitors report they "were able to see several deer," making these parks educational opportunities for nature observation.

Tips from RVers

Long-term options: Several rv parks around Wingate, North Carolina accommodate extended stays. "Stayed here for a couple of month and loved it! Specially with a toddler very friendly and is just that middle base between city and nature," reports a Crown Cove RV Park visitor.

Site selection advice: Research specific site numbers before booking. "If you end up in a crap site you might drop those 4 stars to 3. It's going to be impossible to determine a great site from a bad without going there," warns a Morrow Mountain camper who recommends site 48 in C loop because it's "a good site. Close to the showers, which are clean and well maintained."

Hookup information: Crown Cove RV Park provides full hookups including sewer connections, but some campers note challenges: "our lot was on a hill side which made using our full hookups going up hill." Most campgrounds offer water and electric, but not all have 50-amp service for larger RVs.
