Weather conditions significantly impact the camping experience in eastern North Carolina, with hot, humid summers requiring preparation for insects and heat. Mosquitoes and biting flies are commonly mentioned in visitor reports, particularly near water features. Most campgrounds remain open year-round, though spring and fall typically offer the most comfortable temperatures. The terrain throughout the region is predominantly flat with numerous wetlands, swamps, and waterways. Many campsites feature gravel pads and relatively level ground, making setup straightforward for most equipment. A review noted, "The bugs were not bad at this time of year. The campground and the surrounding area is really amazing and we are glad we stayed for four days this time."

State park campgrounds in the area provide the most natural settings, with sites at Pettigrew and Goose Creek State Parks offering water access and hiking trails. The Cashie River location stands out for its unique treehouse accommodations alongside traditional camping options. Campers consistently mention water activities as a highlight, with fishing, kayaking, and swimming opportunities available at most locations. Cell service varies significantly throughout the region, with stronger connections at campgrounds closer to towns. Several visitors noted the exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities, particularly in the swampy areas and along lake shores. As one camper described Goose Creek State Park: "Our campsite was right on the Pamlico river. There was a great spot to watch the sunrise/sunset directly behind our campsite with benches. Also close to our campsite was a dock to fish off of or to launch a kayak."

      Goose Creek State Park Campground

Fun that's just the right size

We stayed for two nights in the primitive campground. The entire primitive campground was shady and felt ten degrees cooler than the visitors center & RV campground.

We stayed at site 14, the last site in the campground. We had a dock a short walk from our site, the goose creek trail right behind us, and a nice little beach area. The tent pad was a little too small for our tent, but there was plenty of space to set up camp.

The main swimming area of the park was a short drive down the road and a short walk. It was right on the river and perfect for our kiddos.

The proximity to water was awesome and the sunsets were beautiful. Too bad we don't fish, but plenty of places to fish or launch a kayak.

Super easy to pop into town to get anything you might have left at home or if you want to check out a neat historic district with lots to see.

      RV Resort At Carolina Crossroads

      Sweet Community

This is a surprisingly zen spot for what is basically a parking lot surrounded a pine plantation. The community is very friendly and includes a lot of long-term residents, some of whom even have little veggie gardens. There's a lovely little pool and hot tub (unfortunately for the youth, they aren't allowed in the latter), a pool table, a grill, a little putt-putt golf course, and a nice dog park. There is also (at least on the women's side) a very nice universal access shower suite. And some of the spots come with sweet little gazebos to hang out in! I was permitted, with only a few hours notice, to arrive after office hours, for which I was very grateful.

      Goose Creek State Park Campground

Quick stop, pretty but too open

We stayed at this campground overnight while on our way back from picking up our camper in upstate New York and on our way home to Florida.

It was a great stop, well worth the detour. We’re excited to get back to this area. This campground was beautiful, but there weren’t a lot of trees and not much privacy between the campsites.

      Green Acres Campground

Peaceful campground with lots of new upgrades being done with the new owner

Large campground with lots of amenities and activities. 2 pools, laundromat, and 2 bathhouses make it super convenient and the staff is super helpful and nice! They have 3 very nice cabins on site as well

      Enfield - Rocky Mount KOA

      A great getaway

This is a great spot to stop, I knew nothing about it ahead of time I picked it as a midway point between destinations. I stayed in one of the cabins on site and it was simple, but comfortable. There was one bed (either a queen or maybe a full) and a roll-away underneath, table with four chairs, mini refrigerator, Keurig, window AC unit and ceiling fan/light. There was also a porch bench, picnic table and a fire pit.

I arrived after hours but checking in was a breeze and all paperwork was very clear.

Bathrooms are dated, but well maintained and clean.

I have the same cabin booked for my return trip and am really looking forward to coming back!

      Goose Creek State Park Campground

      A nice find

We camped on the primitive side. Hardly anyone here. We took spot 4. Across from the clean pit toilet. They do have water. The area for rvs were packed and it wasn’t as appealing as the primitive. Follow the signs to primitive tent camping. Is a loop and the closer you get to the loop the more bugs cause of the water. On our walk with the dogs seen deer and a raccoon visited us during the night. Internet is spotty. Turn your cellular data on.

Best RV Park in Williamston NC

Clean, safe, affordable rv park that offers long term options. The pond is beautiful and serene with the fountains. Best campground around the Williamston area

    Guide to Windsor

Camping sites near Windsor, North Carolina offer access to eastern Carolina's distinctive blackwater rivers and coastal swamplands. The region sits at low elevation, typically less than 20 feet above sea level, creating the flat, wetland-rich environment characteristic of the Inner Coastal Plain. Most camping areas maintain operating hours year-round, though local hunting seasons from October through January can affect campground availability and require awareness of safety zones.

    What to do

Kayaking on the Cashie River: Campers at Cashie River Campground and Treehouse Village can access direct water entry. "About 200 yards from river, which is perfect for kayaking," notes Never Sitting S., who also mentioned the site has "no wifi nor cable, got three channels with antenna."

Fishing at multiple waterways: The region offers diverse fishing opportunities across several river systems. "We kayaked in their creek that goes out directly to the Chowan River. Large fishing pond, firewood available," reports Kathleen about her experience at Rocky Hock Campground.

Boardwalk hiking: Trail systems often feature elevated boardwalks through swampy terrain. At Family Campground — Merchants Millpond State Park, visitors appreciate the network of raised paths. "The trail system was magical. We hiked early in the am and it was such a therapeutic hike through the forest and swamp," writes Kristi D.

    What campers like

Clear lake waters: Unlike the tannin-stained rivers, some lakes in the region feature surprisingly clear water. At Pettigrew State Park Campground, campers can experience this phenomenon. "The water is amazing! The deepest part of the lake is 9' so you are able to walk around most of the lake. My kids loved this," writes Justin C.

Small, quiet campgrounds: Many camping areas maintain a more intimate atmosphere compared to larger facilities. "This is a small campground with just a few camp sites. We usually overnight there on the way to the NPS campgrounds on the Outer Banks of North Carolina," notes Stirling C. about Pettigrew State Park.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: The region's wetland ecosystems support diverse wildlife. "We traveled through there on the way back from a grocery run and saw a lot of wildlife including a baby black bear," shares Justin C. from Pettigrew State Park.

    What you should know

Bug preparation is essential: Insects can be problematic, especially near water and during warmer months. "If you walk out to the graveyard there is only one small paragragh that will make you smile and feel a little bit better about where you are," mentions Jennifer R. at Pettigrew State Park, who also noted, "Wet wood. Really wet. Most sites were not in great condition."

Water utility connections vary: Hookup quality differs significantly between campgrounds. "Water service is inadequate, it's a water meter box that is in the ground under water itself. Quiet place with clean restrooms," reports Geri B. about Cashie River Campground.

Limited shopping access: Many campgrounds require driving for supplies. At Farm Country Campground, campers should plan accordingly. "About 15 minutes to Williamston NC, with plenty of shopping (-Walmart, Food Lion Piggly Wiggly, Tractor Supply)," explains Dale P.

    Tips for camping with families

Look for kid-friendly amenities: Some campgrounds provide specific facilities for children. "This place was awesome! They have two swimming pools, golf, put put, nature trails, pavilions, Church on Sunday, nice pull through shaded sites," Sara O. shares about Green Acres Family Campground.

Consider swimming conditions: Lake access varies by location and season. "The lake is the second largest in NC, so we spent about 6 hours just swimming, fishing and kayaking within eyesight of the dock," Justin C. notes about Pettigrew State Park.

Check trail difficulty levels: Many trails are suitable for younger hikers. "The trails were super easy, wide and flat. PERFECT for young families or those looking for a stroll rather than a hike," reports Jennifer R. about Pettigrew State Park.

    Tips from RVers

Site dimensions and access: Pay attention to pull-through availability and site sizes. "Stayed in #6 which was very long and easy to pull through," reports Never Sitting S. about Cashie River Campground.

Connectivity considerations: Cell and internet service varies significantly. "Dish, T-Mobile and visible worked great," shares Never Sitting S. about Cashie River Campground, offering helpful carrier information for remote workers.

Long-term stay options: Several campgrounds accommodate extended stays. "We have been here from early September thru February. Phenomenal place for short term and long term stays. We are full time RV'ers and we usually move on after a few months," explains Dale P. about Farm Country Campground.
