Goose Creek State Park Campground offers 5-6 small cabins with heating and air conditioning, two sets of twin beds, and a full bed, though guests must bring their own linens. The cabins include outdoor fire rings and picnic tables but no indoor bathrooms or kitchen facilities. "The cabins are new and clean, with AC/heat and electricity and a nice outdoor setup with a grill and fire pit aside each one," notes Anna B., who stayed at Goose Creek. Most locations are pet-friendly, though specific policies vary by campground. The cabins at Goose Creek lack shade as they're located in a cleared area rather than wooded sections. Twin Lakes Resort offers cabin rentals alongside amenities like a swimming pool, game room, and small store. Accessibility is a consideration at some locations, with Dawn C. noting that Goose Creek State Park has "a cabin that is fully handicapped! It has a paved sidewalk to the bathrooms and they will allow you to drive your 'person' down the access path to the waterway. Even the picnic table has a cut out for a wheelchair!"

Most cabin rentals require guests to bring their own linens, pillows, and toiletries. Cooking facilities vary significantly between locations, with some cabins offering only outdoor fire rings or grills while others may include basic indoor amenities. Firewood is available for purchase at most campgrounds, typically using an honor system at state parks. Goose Creek State Park has no local stores or gas stations in the immediate vicinity, though Washington, NC (about 9-10 miles away) offers a Food Lion, Walmart, and dining options. Campers planning extended stays should bring most supplies with them, particularly if staying at more remote locations where cell service may be limited. Bug spray is essential during warmer months, with ticks and mosquitoes being common throughout the region.

    Goose Creek State Park Campground

    Back to my roots

I have a personal pull to Goose Creek State Park as it was once my family’s land going back generations and generations. My great-grandfather, grandfather, and father carved out the trails used for hiking today and the road to the campground its self was made by my dad and his friends. The state bought the land in the 70’s and it became our state park. It makes me proud to share a part of my family history with the rest of the world.

Even without the personal connection I feel when I visit GCSP, it’s such a beautiful place to be during anytime of the year. Hiking trails equipped with boardwalks lead through the marsh and swampy areas while sporadic signs display pictures and information about the wildlife you are likely to see. The primitive campground has more than 10 sites, with the farthest sights sitting on the edge of the Pamlico River. It truly is an awesome sight to take in at sunset and sunrise. Bath houses with showers, hot water, and toilets are available. There are two group sites and, recently added, several rv sites and about 5-6 small cabins. I have not stayed in the cabins yet. They seem to be fairly popular so reservations should be made at least a couple of weeks in advanced. There heat and AC but no bathrooms or kitchen area inside the cabin. I believe there are two sets of twin beds and a full bed but you have to bring your own linens. There is also a very nice bathhouse available for cabin renters. The only downside to the cabins and RV sites is there is no shade. The sites are toward the front of the park, and, perhaps because of the recent construction, there is are no trees, woods, or shade around. As a personal preference, I want to be IN THE WOODS when I camp so the aspect of being out in the open is not as exciting as tent camping. That being said, the cabins are adorable and have a fire ring, picnic table, and everything you need to enjoy a night of camping.

Very nice state park with rv and tent sites. They have electric and water hookups. There are picnic tables and fire rings at each site. Firewood is available from the ranger. There are showers and toilets also. Many hiking trails with cliff overlook of the Nuese River. There is a swimming area and Connor rental also.

    Goose Creek State Park Campground

    Nice spot in eastern NC

Booked a tent site and later a cabin as well since we were unsure about the weather. The tent sites were nicely situated and far apart from each other. The vault toilet was very clean. The site is peaceful and since the weather was pretty bad, it was quiet and only a few sites were occupied.

The cabins are new and clean, with AC/heat and electricity and a nice outdoor setup with a grill and fire pit aside each one. They are located in the cleared RV park, not the woods, so don't expect to feel like you are staying in nature if you book a cabin. The shower facilities are very nice too. Overall, cabins are a great option if the weather is bad or you don't want to stay in a tent.

Plan for bugs - ticks and mosquitoes are a given in the summer. Also, the swimming beach is closed as of May 2020.

Cliffs of the Neuse State Park Campground

Cliffs above the Neuse River is the biggest draw for campers here.

I have camped in this state park several times, including with the Boy Scouts. Other than the park itself, I really enjoyed the camaraderie when our Scout troop and another Scout troop that was camping were playing“Capture the Flag.” I say all of this because it is a great place for group camping. However, it also has conventional camping and cabins. When I first started camping at Cliffs of the Neuse, it did not have more than a mile of trails. Now it has added some more trails. It also did not have showers or cabins in times past. This park has improved significantly over the years and now has showers that are frequently maintained. One of the things you have to be aware of is that this park is sandy, so when you are camping, you will probably want to put some kind of rug in front of your tent or RV to minimize the amount of sand that you track in. Don’t think choosing another site will move you away from the sand. It won’t. Another thing you have to be aware of is that in eastern North Carolina, fire ants can be a huge problem. Some of the trails are easy, but the Spanish Moss Trail is quite steep in some places. Also, the Galax trail is almost always flooded during the spring or after a series of rains. There is a lake for swimming and a large picnic shelter. On weekends, it is not unusual for there to be lots of people at the picnic shelters, so you will have to reserve them. The sites have picnic tables and fire pits as well. This is a great park for swimming and boating, but the hiking is limited. If I am not mistaken, the total length of trails is fewer three miles. However, the main attraction is the view over the Neuse River and the new visitor’s center. Even with limited trails, it is still a great park for relaxing.

    Tranter's Creek Resort

One of the cleanest pools I have ever laid eyes on.

Tent sites with electrical hook ups right beside the river. There is a fish cleaning sink and a pier to fish from also. Small cabins are for rent here as well. This facility has one of the cleanest pools I have ever been in. Very well kept bathroom facilities with a laundromat as well. Very friendly staff and guests here as well.

    New Bern KOA Holiday

Really nice KOA in a VERY pretty town.

New Bern is a really wonderful little town on the coast of NC and this KOA is close to all the action. I really enjoyed our stay and the local town. We stayed in a camping cabin that overlooked the little pond area. The bathrooms were nice and clean and cabins were nicely appointed.

    Goose Creek State Park Campground

Definitely a campground to visit at least once!

If you have a chance, definitely check out Goose Creek State Park. My husband, son, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, and myself stayed at the park this past weekend, and we had a wonderful time. We stayed at campsite 11, and we had plenty of room for our two tents, two vehicles, a pup, a toddler, and the supplied picnic table, fire pit, and additional charcoal grill. The one negative about spot 11 is there’s a hiking trail that run directly behind the campsite, so it feels like people are constantly walking through your campsite. Spots 1-10 were definitely a bit smaller, and spots 11-14 are larger. If we were to stay again, I believe we’d try to stay at site 13.

The fishing dock is quite small, but it was fun to fish from with a few people. Be sure to bring bug spray! The worst for me was the biting flies. There is one outhouse-type bathroom near the dock with a spigot and dumpster nearby. There are about 10 steps leading up to the one-person, non-flushing bathroom.

There’s a wood station at the campground that uses the honor system. It’s $5 per bundle. We visited the visitors center in the hopes that they would have live bait for sell, but they sell nothing of the sort (no ice, bait, fishing rods, etc). So bring everything you need other than wood!

Overall, I’d give the campground 4.5/5, and I certainly recommend it! Try to stay in sites 11-14 if possible.

    Goose Creek State Park Campground

    Great and New Campground

Goose Creek State Park campground is one of the newer state parks in North Carolina. The RV part of the park has a great layout with large sites. The park is very flat with full hookups and a large patio/picnic area. They also have cabins.

We stayed at one of the full hook up RV sites with our Riverside Retro 199FKS and it actually looked small in the site. We had more than enough room.

You are far enough away from Washington, NC that you don't get great cell coverage so, it is almost like going off the grid. I think I had service if I sat outside with my left leg propped up (just kidding).

Since this park is so new, there are not many trees or vegetation to provide privacy between sites. I think this park will be great once the plants grow in - don't skip for this reason - still go, just know that you won't have a lot of privacy.

    Goose Creek State Park Campground

    Very cool campground!

Not only is this campground surrounded by tall pines and beautiful lakes it is spotless. The campsites are well spaced and give a bit of a community feel with cabins near by the bath house, which also is incredible!!! Heated bathrooms are a plus in our book! Highly recommend 👍🏼

Guide to Grifton

Cabin camping near Grifton, North Carolina offers accommodations within a rural coastal plain setting at around 40 feet above sea level. The region experiences hot, humid summers with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F and mild winters where freezing temperatures are rare. Most cabin facilities in this area operate year-round with peak season running from May through September.

What to do

Waterfront activities: At Goose Creek State Park Campground, fishing and kayaking opportunities abound along the Pamlico River. "Our campsite was right on the Pamlico river. There was a great spot to watch the sunrise/sunset directly behind our campsite with benches. Also close to our campsite was a dock to fish off of or to launch a kayak," notes Maureen C., who also mentions a useful park program: "the park ranger told us about a neat program at the park, where they will loan out fishing poles for free, they are great poles and we ended up catching over 20 fish!"

Hiking trails: Explore multiple trail systems through coastal woodlands. Cliffs of the Neuse State Park Campground offers several trails with varying difficulty levels. "There are about 3-4 miles of hiking trails, one that takes you beside the 90-foot cliffs overlooking the Neuse River," explains Myron C. The park features "a small nature center that describes the history and geographical features of the area."

Swimming options: Several campgrounds maintain dedicated swimming areas. Twin Lakes Resort includes "a big lake that runs to the ocean, great size pool," according to Riley. For a more natural swimming experience, Charles G. at Goose Creek State Park mentions "A separate beach area if you like for swimming."

What campers like

Clean facilities: Campers consistently praise the cleanliness of bathrooms and shower facilities. At New Bern KOA Holiday, Jen B. notes "The bathhouses are all very new due to a recent hurricane and they were kept clean." The campground offers "very clean shower rooms" according to Sara O., while Joe B. appreciates that "The bathrooms were very clean and each had a shower sink and toilet all to yourself. Climate controlled also."

Fishing opportunities: Many campgrounds offer fishing access without requiring travel. At Tranter's Creek Resort, Cannon W. highlights the fishing amenities: "There is a fish cleaning sink and a pier to fish from also." The resort provides "Tent sites with electrical hook ups right beside the river."

Privacy between sites: Site spacing varies significantly between campgrounds. Goose Creek State Park earns praise for its layout: "The sites are spacious, well equipped and well spaced (private). There are several water stations and composting toilets," according to Chip G., while Wayne T. adds that "The sites are pretty big so you can move around easily."

What you should know

Weather considerations: Summer brings intense heat and humidity, requiring preparation. Green Acres Family Campground visitor Sara O. warns about seasonal conditions: "Only down side is the shower room. It needs to be updated but still very functional."

Reservation timing: Many campgrounds fill quickly during peak seasons. This is particularly true for more rustic sites.

Internet connectivity: Cell service varies significantly by location and provider. At Cliffs of the Neuse State Park Campground, Myron C. notes that "Since this state park is in the middle of the country, the sounds of nature are interrupted only by occasional jets flying overhead from the nearby air force base."

Terrain variations: Expect diverse ground conditions depending on the campground. "The camp sites are well maintained with a picnic table and fire pit area. Small gravel used on a dedicated tent area," reports Charles G. from Goose Creek State Park.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly amenities: Look for campgrounds with dedicated children's facilities. Green Acres Family Campground offers comprehensive activities as Sara O. describes: "They have two swimming pools, golf, put put, nature trails, pavilions, Church on Sunday, nice pull through shaded sites, pond for fishing or paddle boats."

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Many sites offer chances to spot local fauna. At Goose Creek State Park, Evelyn O. shares: "On our walk with the dogs seen deer and a raccoon visited us during the night."

Group activities: Some campgrounds organize scheduled events. Twin Lakes Resort features "campground activites such as a live band, DJ, and movie night!" according to Riley.

Swimming safety: Water quality and conditions vary significantly between locations. For families with young children, Twin Lakes Resort provides a controlled environment as Riley notes: "Big lake that runs to the ocean, great size pool."

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Choose your site based on surrounding activities and noise levels. At Whipoorwill Campground, Mathew G. appreciates that it's "Well off the main road as well so you hardly hear any traffic."

Hookup availability: Full-service sites vary widely in the region. Victor A. at Twin Lakes Resort notes: "The lots are spacious with a good view of the water... Hook ups were easy and accessible. Nothing troublesome."

Accessibility considerations: Site terrain can impact ease of setup. Goose Creek State Park offers level camping areas according to Wayne T.: "The sites are pretty big so you can move around easily and there are tons of trails you can check out as well and water access."

Weather preparation: The region experiences occasional severe storms. Twin Lakes visitor Victor A. shares: "We've been here 3 days so far out of 5 and it has been a great stay. The lots are spacious with a good view of the water."
