The Colonies RV and Travel Park

    Historic

Sites: 22 with 1 pull thru 13 full hookups 12 Tent sites

    Electric: 30-50 amp

This is a private campground and you do not have to be military to stay. It really is in a great location.

Beach, dump, firewood, showers, fire pit, store, ice picnic table, playground, toilets, concrete pads, horseshoes, trash. A wonderful spot for a campground on the Historic Fort Monroe. There is no gate to have to pass through to reach the campground. It is located on the far end and on a beautiful flat grassy area with beautiful mature trees. Well maintained and very quiet. While there you must check out the Fort Monroe Casement Museum. You have water on two sides with excellent walking area.

    Isle of Wight Family Campground

    Nice and Very Quiet!

This is a really nice campground. They have on-site bathrooms/showers as well as laundry. It's mostly RV spots but they also allow tent camping and have a couple cabins available for rent. They have a dog park area, playground and pool. The store has items for purchase and a gathering room. They do potlucks and get togethers often for the campers. The staff is very friendly and super helpful. You can purchase firewood and propane on-site. Each spot has a concrete padded area with a picnic table and fire pit. It is a little ways out of town in any direction bit it's very nice and quiet out here as you're surrounded by woods. They also have a fishing pond and trails on-site. This really is one of the best campgrounds I've ever been to! Definitely recommend.

    RV Resort At Carolina Crossroads

Nice place with a few cons

Nice level pull through concrete site with paved road. Good hook ups, clean facilities, nice dog park and clean pool/hot tub. Close off 95, but far enough you don't hear it at all. We even got a gazebo site, which was awesome. They even allow you to wash your rig. Only negatives, are not much in the area to do, no cable or wifi and absolutely no antenna service. Shopping, Walmart, gas and chain restaurants close by. Would definitely stay here again.

Outer Banks West - Currituck Sound KOA

    Relaxation on the Sound.

This KOA is actually still under construction. As with everything else Covid-19 has set it back. But there are many sites available. A lot of the amenities are already available. Dog park, shower house, store, children's play area and they can fill your propane tanks for you. Full hookups with WiFi and cable. Drive through and back in sites with water views all around. We spent a week there and it was so relaxing. They also rent campers and little trailers. Check out their website.

    Green Acres Family Campground

    Great family fun

This place was awesome! They have two swimming pools, golf, put put, nature trails, pavilions, Church on Sunday, nice pull through shaded sites, pond for fishing or paddle boats, I mean I can go on and on. The staff is amazing and polite. Prices are low. Only down side is the shower room. It needs to be updated but still very functional. Great place we will be going back soon!

    Emporia KOA Holiday

    Great Time, and Great Service

This was my first trip in my new travel trailer. What a great experience. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Sites were well organized and easy to access. The pull through spot really helped on my first adventure. Hook ups were clean, and easily accessible. I have no complaints or gripes with this locations. Highly recommend.

The region experiences mild winters with temperatures rarely dropping below freezing, making year-round camping viable for most travelers. Seasonal occupancy fluctuates significantly, with October through March offering quieter campgrounds and more availability.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: The waterways near Cypress Cove Retreat provide excellent fishing access, with boat-in camping options for those wanting direct water access. The retreat maintains 40 sites with both 30-amp and 50-amp electrical hookups for RVers.

Historical exploration: Fort Monroe National Park is within driving distance of several campgrounds. "You have water on two sides with excellent walking area. While there you must check out the Fort Monroe Casement Museum," notes a camper at The Colonies RV and Travel Park.

Kayaking adventures: Many campgrounds offer direct water access. At Rocky Hock Campground, one visitor mentioned, "We kayaked in their creek that goes out directly to the Chowan River." The campground also features a "large fishing pond, firewood available, clean shower house, game room and tidy clean sites."

What campers like

Convenient highway access: The RV Resort At Carolina Crossroads earns praise for its location. "Conveniently right off of I-95. Off enough so there isn't any highway noise," notes one camper. Another mentioned it's "the perfect place to jump off 95 and spend a night. Easy in, flat sites and clean well lit bathhouse."

Clean facilities: Bathroom cleanliness is frequently mentioned in reviews. At Davis Lakes Resort, visitors appreciate the "pretty site and well maintained. Bathrooms very clean," though they noted some limitations with pet policies.

Level concrete pads: RVers value the concrete pads available at several parks. "Sites are large and level," reported one visitor to RV Resort At Carolina Crossroads, while another appreciated the "level pull through concrete site with paved road."

What you should know

Off-season limitations: Many campgrounds reduce services during winter months. At North Landing Beach, amenities like the pool close seasonally, though some visitors noted the hot tub remained open year-round.

Variable WiFi quality: Internet connectivity varies widely between campgrounds. One camper at RV Resort At Carolina Crossroads noted "no cable or wifi and absolutely no antenna service," while others mentioned spotty service throughout the region.

Pet restrictions: While most campgrounds allow pets, some have significant limitations. One camper at Davis Lakes Resort observed the campground was "really not dog friendly...no dogs allowed signs posted all over and no where to really walk or hike due to private camping areas/roads."

Site size variations: Some campers report challenges with advertised site dimensions. "Despite it saying it was 60 ft, spot was still tight. You can't park on grass so we moved to overflow parking," reported one RVer staying at RV Resort At Carolina Crossroads.

Tips for camping with families

Water activities: Treeside RV Park offers family-friendly pond access. "The pond is beautiful and serene with the fountains," notes one visitor who called it the "Best campground around the Williamston area."

Recreation amenities: Check for kid-friendly facilities before booking. At RV Resort At Carolina Crossroads, visitors appreciate "a large pool and a hot tub, as well as a small mini golf course. The mini golf did look a little rundown, but our daughter still really enjoyed it."

Tips from RVers

Extended hookup cords: At Little Creek MWR RV Park, one RVer noted, "The connection boxes are set back pretty far on the sites, so you need longer hoses/cords. We had a long electric cord that reached and had to add a second water hose and second section of sewer hose to connect."

Vehicle size considerations: Large rigs may face challenges at some parks. At RV Resort At Carolina Crossroads, a camper with a 42-foot fifth wheel noted the park had "a tight turning radius and we struggled turning down aisle D."

Budget considerations: Prices can vary significantly from advertised rates. One RVer at RV Resort At Carolina Crossroads noted, "Says $45/night on Dyrt and it was $68," highlighting the importance of confirming current rates when making reservations.
