    Moonshine Creek Campground

    Top Notch

This is an excellent campground! It’s really woodsy and the creek is fabulous. Nice laundry facilities. Especially nice are the tent sites. They seem to have some of the most scenic spots. The Sanctuary area is awesome and the tent sites are right on the creek. It is for those with no pets or kids and is limited to 2 people per site. It’s a quiet zone. There is one tent cabin and 4 tent sites with water and electric. You CAN park at your sites. We weren’t sure before if it was a walk in area. The bathhouse for this area has two toilets and two showers. Each is completely private. There are outlets and sinks in all four. There is also a very nice sink and counter on the end for dishwashing. It’s all in excellent condition. Very nice picnic tables too. They were easy to wipe off. Sites S1-3 have an awning/ shelter. S4 does not but is much larger. S4 is higher up so you look down on the creek. It is more off by itself. S1 even has access to a 2nd picnic table close to the creek. It is the smallest as far as tent space. We would love to visit again!

Deep River Campground And RV Park

    Clean,affordable, and friendly staff

Took a weekend trip to Deep River Campground in Asheboro, NC. Very well kept, level spots, pet friendly, big rig friendly with pull through and back-in sites available. Full hook-ups (50 & 30 amp). Fire pit and picnic tables at each site. About $40 a night, no deposit required. With weekly and monthly rates as well. 2 pools (currently closed due to covid), game room, store, and private pond. Located minutes away from multiple trail heads. We were on lot 20, which is a double space designed for a larger rig, very private with lots of shade.

    Statesville RV Park I-77

    Right off of Interstate

This KOA is RIGHT off of the interstate. If you are in midtravel and need a place to overnight this is a nice KOA for that. The camping cabins are cozy, we stayed in a single which has 1 dbl bed and twin sized bunk bed. Staff was very friendly. I wouldn't consider this a camping destination.

    Lake Norman State Park Campground

    Fantastic quiet get away

We stayed in the new glamping cabin #2. Very clean, comfortable bed, nice AC, lovely porch to relax on. All cabins are in walking distance to the bathrooms and showers. Those as well were pretty clean for a camp ground, I was pleasantly surprised. The path to the bathrooms light up at night so you can find your way very easy in the dark. Camp ground itself was very clean and I often saw the staff working on cleaning it and interacting with the campers. The designated swimming area was like a piece of heaven. Small not to overly packed, very clean beach. We plan on coming pack to do tent camping with our dog, fantastic family or romantic couple retreat.

    Cane Creek Park

A Great Place for the Whole Family.

Located just outside historic Waxhaw NC, Cane Creek is part of the NC Soil Conservative Sites. They offer day passes,$4.00 per car where you can launch you kayak canoe or fishing boat. If you like Bass Fishing, they rank as one of the best spots around. They have swimming areas for both day users and one for campers. This really is a gem within Union Co NC. The campground is on the other side of the lake. They have camping for RV’s, Cabin Rentals and tent sites for either large groups or individuals. The hiking trail is beautiful and takes you around the whole lake. Watch for horses, as this is a great place for riders too.

    Morrow Mountain State Park Campground

Historical get away in the forest

The swaying of pine trees with the smell of the forest greets us at this easily accessible site in our motorhome. Electric and water hookups at our site, dump station available on the way out, camp host available. Picnic tables, fire pit available at our site. Lots of shade, plenty of trails that cover this State Park. The Kron house nearby, the swimming pool ( closed at time of our visit). The town of Albemarle 10 minutes away and Badin lake right down the mountain. Lots of history here just stop at the ranger station for information, maps and more.

    Moonshine Creek Campground

    Peaceful!

This was our 3rd time staying here. This park has a wonderful creek running through the middle of it and most short-term sites back up to it. There are also a couple of camping cabins and some tent sites. The campground road is sort of narrow and the sites can be a little tight, making it awkward to back in if you have a large TV and full-size camper - but once you’re in it’s all good. The creek and nice natural landscaping of the park are very worth it. The owners have done a fantastic job over the years with this piece of property, keeping that mountain forest feeling and just tweaking nature a little. No pool and no playground, but there are spots to get into the creek. Good clean bathhouse with newer washers/dryers and a covered porch where you can hang out waiting for your laundry (or just hang out, period). A good contingent of spots that are booked for the season and plenty of weekend campers like us. It’s a good balance. No full-timers, as the park is closed during the winter. The campground is conveniently located between Sylva and Waynesville and very close to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Surprisingly good cell reception for being in the mountains and having lots of tree cover. Got 1-3 bars ATT depending on where I was within the campground, and we had no issues using our TMobile hotspot to stream videos/tv. They do have wifi at the camp office but we didn’t need to use it.

    Charlotte-Fort Mill KOA

Great for trip to Charlotte NC

We came here to do some trailer maintenance and because it is very close to home. We were not expecting it to be a great camping experience, but we’re pleasantly surprised! The staff were extremely helpful and friendly, the campsites were clean, and the bath houses were newly updated and immaculate. The roads in the section we stayed in were a bit rough (a combination of asphalt and gravel), but perfectly fine for camping. Most of the sites have good shade, but unfortunately our site was in full sun. Our site had full hookups, and a picnic table that was pretty rickety. No fire ring. The sites are very close together, and most are back to back sharing a driveway. Personally we prefer a more secluded camping spot, but this KOA is perfect for an overnight on your way to another location, a trip to nearby Charlotte, or like us, utilizing the full hookups for some waterline maintenance.

    Cane Creek Park

    Great clean campground

We have stayed at Cane Creek 2x now and enjoy the park so much. Lake, hiking trails and nice wooded campsites with fire rings and close proximity to bath houses. Playground for kids, little store, friendly staff. Beach swimming area closed due to Covid but looks nice. Park on other side of lake has picnic shelters, more trails, frisbee golf and kayak rentals that will open after Covid. Only problem is that both times we visited there was a storm and power went out for hours. Can’t really do anything about that!

Guide to Albemarle

Rustic cabin rentals dot the forested landscape surrounding Albemarle, North Carolina, situated in the Uwharrie Mountains region where elevations range from 300 to 1,000 feet. This area experiences four distinct seasons with moderate winters and warm summers, making cabin camping possible year-round. Fall brings vibrant foliage from mid-October through early November when night temperatures typically drop into the 40s.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Uwharrie National Forest Badin Lake Group Camp, visitors can enjoy shoreline fishing for bass, catfish, and crappie. "Beautiful place with great views. Clean facilities close to sites," notes camper John L. about the Badin Lake area.

Trail exploration: The primitive campsites at Dispersed Camping off Falls Dam Trail provide direct access to hiking paths through hardwood forests. One camper, Daniel R., mentioned enjoying "the song of wind and birds" during their weekend stay.

Nature education: Dan Nicholas Park offers a small zoo with native wildlife displays. "There is a beautiful zoo, gem mining, a train ride, amazing fishing, a beautiful playground, and a carousel," writes Lisa L., noting the multiple family-friendly activities available beyond just camping.

Water recreation: Multiple lakes in the area offer paddling opportunities. Houston R. from Morrow Mountain State Park Campground shared, "We rode down to the river and walked along one of the trails as well as rented a canoe for a short paddle down the river."

What campers like

Shade coverage: Mature trees provide relief during summer months when temperatures frequently exceed 90°F. Matthew W. at Norwood Campground appreciated that "many rv parks these days are sun baked parking lots but not here. I estimated roughly 60/40 hardwood/pine and there's sun or shade when you want either."

Wildlife viewing: Campers frequently report seeing deer, various bird species, and amphibians. James H. from Morrow Mountain State Park shared: "The park is gorgeous and full of life. I saw plenty of frogs and tadpoles in the creeks, listened to a symphony of birds, and I'm pretty sure heard a few coyotes throughout the night."

Peaceful atmosphere: Several cabins near Albemarle offer seclusion despite their proximity to town. According to Cory A., Norwood Campground is a "great little gem in the area to avoid the chaos and calamity with the other Uwharrie area campgrounds. Very quiet and peaceful."

Site spaciousness: Many cabin areas feature adequate separation between units. Sarah B. at Dan Nicholas Park noted their "spacious site" and mentioned "we were able to get our 37 ft camper level."

What you should know

Bathroom facilities: Condition of bathhouses varies significantly by location and season. At High Rock Lake Marina and Campground, Casey W. found "excellent amenities and friendly service," but Robert D. noted at Dan Nicholas Park that "bathhouses are in very poor shape" during his visit.

Reservation requirements: Most cabin rentals require booking weeks in advance, especially for weekend stays from April through October. Lisa M. from Dan Nicholas Park advises: "We live just a few miles from Dan Nicholas, but love to 'get away' there any chance we get... Can't wait to go back!"
