Dispersed camping opportunities near West Haverstraw, New York concentrate in several undeveloped areas within driving distance of the town. Hemlock Ridge Multiple Use Area provides primitive sites with no amenities approximately 25 miles northwest of West Haverstraw. Both areas require campers to follow Leave No Trace principles and establish sites at least 150 feet from marked trails, roads, or water sources.

Access to these primitive camping areas varies seasonally, with most requiring hiking to reach suitable camping spots. Hemlock Ridge features a small parking area accommodating only 4-6 vehicles, making early arrival advisable during peak periods. Neither location provides drinking water, restroom facilities, or established campsites. Cell service remains generally available at Taconic Hereford, while coverage at Hemlock Ridge is limited.

These backcountry camping areas attract visitors seeking quiet woodland experiences within reasonable proximity to town amenities. Taconic Hereford Multiple Use Park backs up to additional protected forest land, creating extended hiking opportunities through connected natural areas. A visitor described it as "a quiet piece of beautiful forest to truly rough it and go camping for a few days, less than 10 min drive from town." At Hemlock Ridge, campers note the area is particularly popular with rock climbers accessing nearby formations. According to one camper, it provides "a quiet peaceful wooded area" where "you can set up your own camp anywhere" as long as you follow distance requirements from the trail.

    Taconic Hereford Multiple Use Park

    A hidden gem...

99% off people don't even know this area exists. If you want a quiet piece of beautiful forest to truly rough it and go camping for a few days, then this is what you have been looking for. Less then 10 min drive from town, but hiking in and finding a suitable place to make camp has the feeling of the wild, with the safety of having full cell service. There is plenty of trails to explore and wildlife to enjoy, especially since these over 900 acres also back up to another huge plot of protected forests. Please enjoy Mother Nature's healing love, and leave the area cleaner than when you arrived. Always let someone know where you are headed and when you plan to return.

    Hemlock Ridge MUA Dispersed

A place to sleep near the gunks

This isn't a fancy campsite and has no amenities. There is a small(10 car) parking lot and a trail that runs thru 80 acres of forest. Camping is allowed anywhere 150ft from the trail. Normal LNT rules apply. Bugs are relentless. Many climbers stay there for access to the gunks.

    Hemlock Ridge MUA Dispersed

    Pretty cool

If you like dispersed camping, like me- this place is good. There are absolutely no amenities whatsoever & barely even a signal here, but it’s quiet & off the beaten path. The parking lot only holds about 4-5 cars, 6 if you park real tight. There’s no spectacular mountain views from above, but rather a quiet peaceful wooded area & although I only seen/stayed at one camping spot which is literally at about the required 150ft from the road, you can set up your own camp anywhere. I was the only one here & it was a very peaceful & relaxing night

Guide to West Haverstraw

Dispersed camping near West Haverstraw, New York includes primitive sites within several undeveloped natural areas, most requiring at least a short hike to reach suitable camping locations. The region sits along the Hudson Highlands, characterized by mixed hardwood forests and occasional rock outcroppings. Weather patterns vary significantly by season, with summer temperatures averaging 75-85°F and winter temperatures frequently dropping below freezing, often limiting camping access during snow accumulation periods.

What to do

Rock climbing access: Hemlock Ridge MUA Dispersed serves as a convenient base camp for climbers visiting nearby formations. The 80-acre forested property requires campers to establish sites at least 150 feet from the main trail. "This isn't a fancy campsite and has no amenities. There is a small(10 car) parking lot and a trail that runs thru 80 acres of forest... Many climbers stay there for access to the gunks," notes Cory D.

Forest hiking: Taconic Hereford Multiple Use Park connects to additional protected forest lands, creating extended hiking opportunities through interconnected trail systems. The park spans over 900 acres of undeveloped woodland. "There is plenty of trails to explore and wildlife to enjoy, especially since these over 900 acres also back up to another huge plot of protected forests," explains Doc B.

Wildlife observation: The forested areas provide habitat for various woodland species including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and numerous bird species. Morning and evening hours typically offer the best wildlife viewing opportunities. Bring binoculars and maintain distance from any animals encountered.

What campers like

Proximity to town: Despite feeling remote, many dispersed camping areas remain relatively close to West Haverstraw and surrounding communities. This allows campers to access supplies when needed without lengthy drives. "Less then 10 min drive from town, but hiking in and finding a suitable place to make camp has the feeling of the wild," reports one camper about the Taconic Hereford area.

Cell service availability: Unlike many remote camping destinations, some dispersed sites near West Haverstraw maintain reasonable cellular connectivity. "Hiking in and finding a suitable place to make camp has the feeling of the wild, with the safety of having full cell service," notes a visitor to Taconic Hereford Multiple Use Park.

Solitude opportunities: The dispersed nature of camping in these areas often provides privacy not found at developed campgrounds. "I was the only one here and it was a very peaceful and relaxing night," shares Dawn M. about her experience at Hemlock Ridge MUA Dispersed.

What you should know

Limited parking capacity: Arrive early to secure parking, particularly during peak seasons and weekends. "The parking lot only holds about 4-5 cars, 6 if you park real tight," explains Dawn M. regarding Hemlock Ridge.

No facilities: Dispersed camping areas near West Haverstraw lack developed amenities. "There are absolutely no amenities whatsoever and barely even a signal here, but it's quiet and off the beaten path," reports a camper at Hemlock Ridge. Campers must pack in all necessary supplies including water and waste disposal bags.

Insect preparation: Bugs can be problematic during warmer months. "Bugs are relentless," warns one camper about Hemlock Ridge. Bringing appropriate insect repellent, protective clothing, and possibly netting for sleeping areas is strongly recommended from late spring through early fall.

Tips for camping with families

Safety communications: Given the remote nature of dispersed camping, establish clear safety protocols before your trip. "Always let someone know where you are headed and when you plan to return," advises Doc B. about camping at Floyd Bennett Field.

Navigation planning: Mark potential camping spots on maps before arrival, understanding that suitable flat areas for tents may require searching. Consider downloading offline maps as backup for areas with limited cellular coverage.

Leave No Trace education: Use the experience to teach children proper wilderness ethics. "Please enjoy Mother Nature's healing love, and leave the area cleaner than when you arrived," reminds a visitor to Taconic Hereford Multiple Use Park.

Tips from RVers

Size limitations: Standard RVs cannot access most dispersed camping areas near West Haverstraw due to limited access roads, parking constraints, and absence of designated sites. Small campervans with appropriate clearance may access some parking areas, but occupants should be prepared to tent camp rather than sleep in vehicles.

Alternative options: RVers should consider developed campgrounds within 30-45 minutes of West Haverstraw that offer appropriate accommodations. Most state parks in the region provide RV camping with varying hookup availability, typically requiring reservations during peak season.
