Cabin rentals near New Berlin, New York provide access to central New York's rolling hills and wooded terrain at elevations between 1,000-1,800 feet. The region features four distinct seasons, with summer temperatures averaging 75-85°F during peak camping months of June through August. Winter cabin rentals remain available at several locations, though fewer campgrounds operate during the November-April period.
What to do
Fishing access: Gilbert Lake State Park stocks its waters with game fish, making it a popular spot for anglers. "We brought our bikes and explored the many hiking and riding trails on the premises. We loved the swimming beach soaking up the sun and cool refreshing water. As fisherman we loved that the rangers told us that the lake was regularly stocked with trout and other game fish," notes a visitor to Bowman Lake State Park.
Baseball tourism: Located 15-20 minutes from Cooperstown, Glimmerglass State Park Campground serves as a convenient base for Baseball Hall of Fame visits. "Great for families, the parking lot is huge, there's easy hiking on the grounds, and it's close to Cooperstown - visit the baseball hall of fame!" reports a camper.
Trail systems: Multiple campgrounds feature hiking loops around their lakes. "We went up for a weekend trip. Tent camping. Site was sufficiently private and tucked away, but water/bathrooms/showers were close enough. Very clean facilities! Really enjoyed the kayaking and beach area," shares a visitor to Bowman Lake State Park.
What campers like
Beach facilities: Many campers appreciate the swimming areas at nearby campgrounds. "The views at Glimmerglass are wonderful. I have brought my dog swimming and hiking several times. The beach is great and well kept," explains an outdoor enthusiast.
Campsite privacy: Lebanon Reservoir Campground receives praise for its site spacing. "The sites themselves are all in the open, imagine parallel parking your rig off the side of a road, with a nice forest behind you. That's kind of the deal here. But with room to fit another camper or two in between you and the next rig," describes one camper at Lebanon Reservoir Campground.
On-site recreational amenities: Ball fields and play areas make certain campgrounds stand out. "Clean, modern bathrooms. Campsites were raked and ready for us when we arrived. Super friendly staff! Just a well laid out campground that was perfect for us. Peaceful, a mix of wooded sites for RV's and open sites with their cabins. 2 swimming pools, really nice playground for the younger kids, 2 baseball fields," notes a visitor to Cooperstown Beaver Valley Campground.
What you should know
Seasonal limitations: Some campgrounds restrict water activities during certain periods. "A major problem at this park is the recent development of a toxic algae problem in the lake. Because of algae blooms during warm weather, swimming and fishing in Gilbert Lake are now prohibited," explains a Gilbert Lake visitor.
Varying bathroom quality: Facilities differ widely between campgrounds. "Only one bath house and it's a bit dated. Very pet friendly including a dog play pen. Pool looked nice and was still open in early October," reports a guest at Unadilla KOA.
Road noise: Some campgrounds sit near busy routes. "The sites by the road have noise from the road which is busier than you might think," warns a Lake Chalet Motel and Campground visitor.
Tips for camping with families
Playground amenities: Several campgrounds offer child-friendly recreation areas. "We went up for a weekend trip. Tent camping. Site was sufficiently private and tucked away, but water/bathrooms/showers were close enough. Very clean facilities! Really enjoyed the kayaking and beach area," shares a Bowman Lake visitor.
Team accommodation: Baseball tournament groups can find specialized options. "Cute cabins, lots of great amenities, pools, corn hole, volleyball net, nicely kept baseball fields, store, areas for group picnics. You could have the whole team stay here in the cabins and bring RVs too," explains a visitor to Cooperstown Beaver Valley Campground.
All-weather facilities: Year-round cabin rentals near New Berlin provide shelter during inclement weather. "Spacious cabin was clean and comfortable. Two bedrooms, one with bunk beds and another with a full. There were dressers in each room. Also in the main room with a fireplace, futon, and table with benches. Screened-in porch that had a toilet area," reports a visitor to Gilbert Lake State Park.
Tips from RVers
Site layouts: RV parking at many campgrounds follows standardized configurations. "I've been camping at Gilbert lake for 35 or so years. It's pretty quiet, the state has made many sites bigger over the last few years and is starting to add electricity to more sites. You can fill your water tank at the dump station as there are no water hookups," advises a Hartwick Highlands Campground visitor.
Cell service: Connectivity varies significantly between campgrounds. "On top of hill right outside of town. Stayed during the week and was able to get a more secluded, wooded site. (Most of them are pretty open) It was quiet at night. You can hear some traffic from down below at busier times," notes a visitor to Deer Haven Campground and Cabins.
Site leveling: Prepare for varying terrain when booking RV sites. "A bit off the beaten path for a KOA, but nearly sold out in early October nonetheless. Sites range from typical large rig to dispersed tents next to a creek. The tent sites with electric like the one we took used 240v 50A plugs, so we had to borrow a converter plug from the office for our 120v equipment," explains a Unadilla KOA guest.
