Best Cabin Camping near Hector, NY

Cabins near Hector provide rustic to modern accommodations across several state parks and private campgrounds. Watkins Glen State Park Campground features cabins nestled among hardwood forests with picnic tables and fire rings for meal preparation. "Campsites are nestled among hardwood forests, offering a perfect balance of sunlit clearings and shady retreats," noted one visitor. Taughannock Falls State Park offers cabin options with basic amenities while Robert H. Treman State Park Campground provides cabins grouped together, making them ideal for friends camping together. Most cabins include electricity, refrigerators, and beds, though bathroom facilities are typically shared in central locations.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. Watkins Glen/Corning KOA offers barebones cabins with small refrigerators, bunk beds, and TVs. "Our cabin was barebones but it was clean, had a TV, small refrigerator, a bunk bed and full. Plenty of room for two people!" according to a recent review. Sampson State Park Campground features small cabins that sleep 3-4 people in one room. Most cabins require advance reservations, especially during peak summer months from May through October. Pet policies vary by location, with many campgrounds allowing pets in designated cabin areas with proper documentation.

Most cabins include beds but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. Cooking facilities vary widely between locations—some cabins offer only outdoor fire rings while others provide refrigerators and microwaves. On-site camp stores at locations like Watkins Glen/Corning KOA sell essential supplies, firewood, and ice. Campers should verify what's included with their specific cabin rental, as amenities differ significantly between parks. Cabin guests should also be prepared for wildlife encounters, as one review mentioned: "Animals such as bats, mice, chipmunks, ants, flies, bees, birds, skunks, raccoons, fox, coyote, etc. are a normal occurrence when camping in a nature setting."

    Watkins Glen State Park Campground

Watkins Glen State Park, New York

Campers arriving at Watkins Glen State Park are immediately captivated by its dramatic gorge scenery, where 19 waterfalls cascade through narrow stone walls. Their campsites are nestled among hardwood forests, offering a perfect balance of sunlit clearings and shady retreats. Each site comes equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, making it easy to prepare meals after a day spent exploring the park’s famous Gorge Trail. The park’s facilities blend rustic charm with modern comforts: clean flush toilets, hot-water showers, and convenient potable water stations. Hiking enthusiasts appreciate the interconnected trail system, which includes the popular Rim Trail for elevated views of the gorge, as well as more secluded footpaths through hemlock groves. Families particularly enjoy the nearby swimming pool and easy-access picnic areas overlooking Seneca Lake. To simplify travel logistics for out-of-state visitors, many campers opt to pre-book an airport transfer so they can arrive at Ithaca or Elmira–Corning Regional Airport and head straight to the park without the hassle of car rentals. Those planning to explore multiple stops along the Finger Lakes often choose the provider’s reliable city-to-city rides for comfortable, door-to-door transportation between destinations. All in all, Watkins Glen State Park delivers an unforgettable combination of awe-inspiring gorge hikes, well-appointed campsites, and family-friendly amenities. Campers seeking both adventure and relaxation will find this New York treasure hard to surpass.

    Pine Cradle Lake Family Campground

RV/tent campground in a beautiful setting

This is a gated campground that we stayed at 6/30/19-7/04/19. We are NOT an RV. We own a Napier tent that hooks to our truck so that we can sleep up in the bed. However, due to it being a holiday week, the tent sites were completely booked and they only have 4(which also have water& electric). The tent sites are located in the back of the campground behind the sports field within the trees. I unfortunately didn’t get a chance to see them but they have them pictured on their website. They let us book an RV site and it was rough setting up on a gravel RV site but we understood that we were not within a normal tent element and placed an extra tarp under the tent. The campground is located at the top of some beautiful and scenic driving through farmland in Pennsylvania and you will be 30 minutes from anything like shopping or small town amenities(we drove to Walmart after setting up to get our perishables since we drive up from Virginia). Our site had water and electric, was a drive through spot for a typical RV with a section to the side of the drive through for the fire pit and picnic table. We were located right next to the shower/bathrooms/playground and had some tree coverage and shade. A lot of the RVs in the campground are permanent sites and our neighbors never showed so we had a quiet buffer but it was not a noisy campground. It appeared that they cleaned the bathrooms twice daily and we were impressed with the cleanliness of the bathroom/showers. There were 4 in the building so we never had to wait. The staff were friendly and helpful. They had a store right next to the pool area that offered common items and RV'er might need with a small grocery area as well which included bundles of wood($6 honor system after hours) and Ice($1.78 per bag). We were allowed to run an account which we paid at the end of our stay. Our campsite was required to be paid at check in. The campground is 18 acres with gravel roads, a sports field, fishing, horse shoes, bocce ball, multiple playgrounds, a rec center with some games, claw machines etc. a splash pad and salt water pool. You will be doing a lot of walking or bring your bicycles like we did. They offer scheduled activities for holidays etc and various weekend activities. You can rent non electric boats and they offer catch& release fishing without a PA license in the lake. My son caught 2 sunfish :) They have guidelines for visitors and quiet hours(my cousin came to visit us in the evenings as she lived close by). We enjoyed camping here even if we were on an RV site. We booked site 211 which had the little bit of tree coverage and was located right next to the showers/bathrooms/playground with a quick walk to the lake for fishing. Most of the other available sites in the road ahead of us had no tree coverage but closer to the lake had more trees and shade. OR, just get an actual tent site :) but they are all the way at the back of the campground, furthest from the lake so I actually preferred our site.

    Sampson State Park Campground

    Back for a 2nd time

    HIGHLIGHTS :

    Most sites are pretty spacious

    Pets allowed in some loops

Marina convenience store with pontoon boat rentals

    Fishing

    Swimming

    Ice cream and concessions stand

    Arcade room

    Outdoor movie screen

    Nice playgrounds

    Military museum

Paved loops - good for bikes and scooters

    NEAR BY ATTRACTIONS: Wineries

    CONS:

Electric service boxes are shared in-between sites. This could pose an issue if your power cord is not long enough.

There is only source for water fill up. This could end up being a very very long wait if you arrive at the same time as other campers.

    Only 2 dump stations

They don’t allow pull-in camping. Campers MUST be backed in

    Flint Creek Campgrounds

Great activities, friendly hosts, full hook ups!

Close to wine country you will find this gem of a family campground. Dog and kid friendly with activities such as wagon rides, arts and crafts, movie night and various themed weekend events. The hosts were super friendly and welcoming during our entire stay. An easy back in site with full hookups (B10) backed against a row of trees and a field that provided much entertainment of squirrels and birds. There is a camp store with very reasonable prices and accepts credit cards. Wood ($4) and ice ($2) are also for sale. There are two small cabins to rent along with a couple of family tent sites. The bathrooms/showers were clean near the camp store. Amenities include a pool, mini golf ($1/person), two playgrounds, horseshoes, a recreation center with games and movies, basketball and shuffle board. There are many seasonal campers at this campground, but all seemed friendly and welcoming as well. It truly seemed like one big happy family there.

Ontario County Park at Gannett Hill

    Wonderful!

Great secluded tent camping (recomend numbers 7 and 8), cabins are new and ample beds and space. Camper camping is close to everything, but less privacy. Numerous pavilions that are wonderful for parties or weddings. Stunning overlook that is breathtaking (also great for weddings). Hiking, bike trails, fishing pond, playground, open fields for sports, much more!!! Great for photo shoots, weekend stress getaways etc. I live close by and visit a few times a month.

    Conesus Lake Campground

Camping with amenities, close to fun

This is your typical Mom and Pop family campground, there are rules to follow but they do not hinder on your experience. They have a well stocked camp store, boat rentals, golf cart rentals, an indoor heated pool, jump pad, playgrounds, a hiking trail and frisbee golf. The bottom portion of the campground has mostly seasonal campers and cabins. You do have to go up a pretty steep hill to get to the 'transient' camping section, but there are many pull through, level, full hook up sites to choose from. ( We had site 250 and really liked it) The bathrooms were toilet/shower combos and were very clean. Attractions close by is a drive-in with 4 different screens, many places to eat, parks ( Vitale Park was really nice), a fun center with mini golf, go carts, batting cages, laser tag and arcade. We also experienced the local flea market in Avon, NY. It's HUGE!

    Pinecreek Campground

Beautiful Park, beautiful area could be so much more with a little effort!

Pinecreek is a beautiful park in a great area 10 minutes from downtown Ithica New York and Lake Cayuga. The area has everything you could possibly want or need. Fabulous State Parks with spectacular waterfalls, a farmers market right on the lake front, Cornell University and so much more. That being said it may be the reason the campground doesn't offer any planned activities. They do have a swimming pool and what appears to be a large clubhouse/meeting area that is not or was not used while we were there, nor were any activities publicized. They do have a small arcade but it did not stay open past 8 pm and did not appear to be air-conditioned.

Our campsite was a full hookup with a large grassy area for setting up our outside chairs and picnic table. Although we enjoyed our stay we felt it was a bit overpriced for not having much to offer. They also have a very long list of rules & while they do allow pets there is a list of breed restrictions you need to be aware of before booking a reservation. They also charge for electricity on any stays one week or longer which we had not encountered previously at campgrounds where we have stayed.

Overall we enjoyed our stay but not sure we would stay again.

Guide to Hector

Cabin accommodations in the Finger Lakes region near Hector, New York range from rustic to modern units. State parks like Watkins Glen and Robert H. Treman offer cabins with various amenities, while private campgrounds provide additional options. Most cabins require advance reservations, with peak season running May through October when temperatures average 70-85°F during summer days.

What to do

Gorge hiking: Watkins Glen State Park Campground features 19 waterfalls accessible via the famous Gorge Trail. "The gorge trail is a MUST. Definitely go check this campsite out!" notes Laura L. The park offers interconnected trails for all skill levels, including the Rim Trail for elevated views of the gorge.

Swimming in natural pools: Taughannock Falls State Park Campground provides lake access with a swimming area reaching 12 feet deep. "The swimming area goes to 12 feet deep and has a dock to jump off of," reports Barbara S. This creates a refreshing option after hiking to view the park's namesake waterfall.

Visit nearby attractions: The region offers multiple activities beyond camping. "There is a Farm Sanctuary that my son very much enjoyed. There are Stables nearby where you can book a trail ride," mentions Jennifer W. from Watkins Glen. Most attractions are within a 30-minute drive of major campgrounds.

What campers like

Spacious sites: Sampson State Park Campground offers generous campsites with electric hookups. "Spacious campsites, electric and water hook ups. Bathhouses are clean," reports Michele D. The park also features cabins that sleep 3-4 people in single rooms.

Well-maintained facilities: Campers appreciate the condition of campground facilities. "The bathrooms were nice with multiple free, hot showers. I believe there were separate dishwashing sinks inside the restrooms," notes Emma N. about Robert H. Treman State Park Campground.

Lake views: Many cabin campers value proximity to water. "Our site was nicely shaded and across from the small lake. The showers were hot and the facilities were clean," remarks Katie K. about Sned Acres Campground. Lake views provide scenic backdrops for morning coffee or evening relaxation.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most cabins require advance booking, especially during summer months. At Buttermilk Falls State Park Campground, visitors should "Reserve ahead of time in summer," advises Harry H. Reservations often open 9 months in advance through the New York State Parks reservation system.

Cabin amenities vary widely: Some cabins offer bare necessities while others provide more comforts. "Our cabin was barebones but it was clean, had a TV, small refrigerator, a bunk bed and full. Plenty of room for two people!" explains a reviewer about Watkins Glen/Corning KOA.

Seasonal considerations: Not all facilities operate year-round. "One thing that we were kind of disappointed in, is that the campground pool doesn't open until the end of June," notes Jennifer W. Similarly, cabin availability may be limited outside the main season from May through October.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Pinecreek Campground provides recreational facilities for children. "Family friendly, beautiful atmosphere, nice roomy sites, great pool and kids get to ride their bikes all over and feel safe," explains Stephen B. Consider requesting cabin sites near playgrounds for easier supervision.

Educational opportunities: Several parks offer learning experiences. "Lots of educational posters along the way to keep you informed of what you were seeing and the history about how it was created," reports Steve W. about Taughannock Falls. These features help engage children while hiking.

Entertainment options: Some campgrounds provide organized activities. At Paradise Park Campground, "Daily activities including hay rides and a bunch of decorated wagons being towed by 4 wheeler for the kids," notes John L. These structured activities can supplement family-led adventures.

Tips from RVers

Site selection considerations: When booking cabins or RV sites, note the utility placement. "Check out which side the hookups are on. Some not situated on the right side so you'll need extra long cords," advises Beth at Taughannock Falls State Park.

Road conditions: Internal campground roads vary in quality. "The roads within the campground were kind of tight to get through with trees and curves," reports Laura L. about Watkins Glen State Park. This information helps travelers with larger vehicles plan accordingly.

Utility arrangements: At Robert H. Treman State Park, "Some sites have shared fresh water hookup between the sites," explains Jennifer D. Understanding these arrangements helps prevent surprises upon arrival and allows campers to prepare appropriate equipment.
