    Las Cruces KOA

    Fantastic scenic spot

Lower Ridge Road Camping Area — Elephant Butte Lake State Park

    Love NM state parks

We stayed here twice. Once in April, Loop C lot 88 and once in May, Lower ridge Lot 2. April was more pleasant due to the cooler weather. Lake has been low for a while, but it's still very pretty. It's hard to give NM State parks a bad review. They have some of the best and they're only $14 for water, electric, pavilion, firepit & wifi. Lot 88 we got better wifi and lot 2 was more secluded. We were there during a fire ban, which I think they have most of the time, but fires were not allowed. You could have a propane portable fire pit, but you have to be within 30 feet of water, which was not a problem with the RV sites. Bathrooms were clean. However the dump station and bathroom near lot 88 was closed. Dump station in Quail Run was open for use but that bathroom was a hike. This SP will always be our go to, when driving through NM.

    Las Cruces KOA

    Great Stop When Passing Through

We stopped at this KOA for one night while passing through New Mexico.   We had a great view of the valley below and our site had everything we needed--full hookups. We were pretty close to others but that's not unusual for a KOA. Nothing wrong with this place but not a luxurious campground.

    Desert cove loop

Only $18 for the night, able to reserve online same day. There’s tons of sites here. The desert cove loop has a bathroom with showers. Each site has a cement pad with fire pit and picnic table. Our site has electric and water. You have neighbors on each side but there’s a good amount of trees and space to walk around in behind the site.

South Monticello Campground — Elephant Butte Lake

    Beautiful, Remote, & Inexpensive

Situated on the edge of a sprawling reservoir along the Rio Grande river, this park is the perfect place to enjoy the vast landscape of the area. The nearby town of Truth or Consequences, NM is small, but has all the services you might need for food, gas, supplies, or soaking in hot springs.

The campground is well spaced out, each spot has a picnic table with shade/rain structure (I’ll let you guess which purpose gets more use) and nearly all have electricity and water. That means NO generators! The bath house is clean and offers flush toilets, running sinks and warm showers. All sites are reservation only, but you can do that when you get there as there is plenty of LTE cell service.  We've never seen this place crowded in the winter months.  For what you get at this campground, it’s a bargain at twice the price.

The campground is ideal for solar power, as is the New Mexico weather. We also had no problem connecting with Starlink.  Hiking, mountain biking, boating, fishing and all other sorts of desert recreation is available right from the campground.  Definitely worth the visit!

    Las Cruces KOA

    Great New Mexico Stop

We stopped on either end of our trip to the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. It was a great midway point from home. We stayed in a patio site. The site was spacious and level. A fire pit with chairs, a propane grill, and table with 4 chairs was provided. The kids enjoyed cornhole, basketball, tetherball, and the playground. The store was well stocked. I only wish more local products were sold. Many of the items that appeared to be made by Native Americans were actually imported from overseas. We also wish the community room had board games or movies to check out. The coffee and pastries was a great touch! We will definitely be back to explore the area more. Employees were friendly and kind. A great place to stay!

Lower Ridge Road Camping Area — Elephant Butte Lake State Park

    Lower Ridge Road Sites

When we first arrived, we were surprised by the size of this park. The signage could be improved to help direct first timers, but once here you'll soon learn the layout of the park. We stayed on Lower Ridge Road, site 2. It was a nice sandy spot, with ample room to park our 34' travel trailer. All sites have a picnic table, shelter, and fire pit. Our site also had electric and water. The public restroom was conveniently located nearby. Full signal for Verizon. It's on our list to return!

Be sure to visit Truth or Consequences, NM while here.

    Railroad Canyon Campground

    Clean Quick Stop

This is a solid little campground with 3 (maybe 4?) campsites and few amenities. This campground is a “little” more hidden from the road than other nearby campgrounds. Railroad Canyon Campground has many trails to access the wilderness from, and a small creek running behind each of the three campsites.

The campground does have a toilet, fire pits, picnic tables, and trash service. Please clean up after yourself, and leave no trace.

Tips from RVers

Winter accessibility: Most campgrounds remain open year-round, but some forest service sites close seasonally. A visitor attempting to camp at Railroad Canyon in December reported: "The four campgrounds in this area (Iron Creek, Railroad Canyon, Upper and Lower Gallinas) are all closed in December 2021. Perhaps just for the season. Contact NFS for status."

Extended stay discounts: Weekly and monthly rates offer significant savings for longer visits near Salem, New Mexico. "For $464 / month" at Sunny Acres RV Park, visitors can secure full hookup sites, though note this is primarily a 55+ park.
